  • "If the world can be saved, it will be by women"
Vigdís Finnbogadóttir made a historic contribution to women's empowerment when she became the first woman in history to be elected as a head of state, going on to become a hugely successful and long-serving President of Iceland and a national treasure to her people.
The 60,000-euro Vigdís Prize, named in her honour, was launched in her presence during the Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik in May 2023 to honour "outstanding initiatives to promote the empowerment of women".
This short film traces the career of this remarkable woman - and presents the Prize she has inspired.

Great video but the pronunciation of her name could be better, her name is not 'Wingdish'! The correct pronunciation of her name Vigdís is something closer to 'Wig-deez' (English pronunciation).
