  • @bansheezs
    @bansheezs Před 8 lety +3

    In case people want to know, the tires are brand new geolandar a/t. 4low + 4lock+ esp full off was used. I wish I had a spotter for this and maybe airing down the tires would have helped. I just couldn't keep the speed going up it. When I got to the highest point I tried to turn the wheel around to get it start going forward again with no luck. That hill was just super slippery with all the loose dirt. 2 of the tires would just keep spinning and the brake locks differential wouldn't fully stop them because there was still some partial traction on the slipping tires. It would just kind of pulse the brake locks.

      If you want to go offroad, get a Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ, or Wrangler, or basically any jeep made before 2006
      Much better.
      those little 4 cylinders in patriots can’t do shit, especially with a CVT. Also very unreliable.
      We had a patriot and were glad its gone, and now own 2 Wrangler TJs, 2 Wrangler JKs, and 1 Cherokee XJ.

      It's not the fault of the CVT. It's the fault of too tall gearing. Subarus and low end Jeeps don't have low range gearing like you get in a two speed transfer case. This puts the engine at a torque disadvantage.

    • @sourwords1808
      @sourwords1808 Před 8 lety

      Hey there.
      I assure you all Patriots untill now if automatic are CVT transmission.
      What you refer to as 6 speed automatic, is the ratios that are put in place which mimick the change of gears as you drive. In reality its a CVT and with 1 mechanical gear. Which is why it failed time and time again, because the CVT failed to build enough momentum to assist in that climb. Ofcourse besides the bad tire choice and a weak engine that isn't designed for such circumstances.

    Excuses, excuses, excuses! No, it's not that the engine is too small. No, it isn't that the gearing isn't low enough. The main two problems are a) The driver didn't have enough experience to pick the best line and b) He didn't know how to take advantage of what Jeep calls, "brake-lock differentials".
    As for "airing down", that would have made it easier on both the driver and the vehicle (and on the lady when she was in the vehicle). There are ways to deal with the problem of not having a compressor with you. 1) carry a tank full of compressed air. 2) Carry a tire pump (a 12-volt pump or a hand pump). Yes, a compressor would be faster than a tire pump but most people shouldn't even be off pavement if they are in a hurry. (You really shouldn't be off pavement any father than the parking lot at the local sweet corn stand without one of the above.) But even if you don't have a way to pump up the tires yourself before getting back on pavement, there are VERY few places in the U.S. where you can't plan your route so you can come out from driving off pavement somewhere near a filling station with an air hose.
    Now please, TFL, find someone with half the experience my wife has driving off pavement and who understands both physics and the Freedom Drive II system and make a video of someone going up that hill in a bone-stock vehicle with Freedom Drive II.

    So where is this hill located (GPS location perhaps), neither the funtreks book nor traildamage seem to indicate any specific hills on the switzerland trail and overall the trail is rated as very easy. Tempted to take my Cherokee Trailhawk on it (would probably do it, since that early bronco did it on street tires, in the mud and with open diffs).

  • @dailydriver8922
    @dailydriver8922 Před 8 lety

    Geesh, Roman didn't need to be so dramatic and go fast up the hill in the Wrangler or Bronco, both would have easily crawled up. Off roading isn't about speed.
    And I would have expected a little better from the Outback and Patriot, perhaps a driver mod would help...

    I think I found the spot on Google maps. Next time I'm out to Colorado I'd like to try it in our '05 Outback XT with the older AWD system and 5EAT vs this new X-drive system and CVT. I don't think the old system will "stop", but spin all four wheels when it can't climb any more.

  • @1guyin10

    • @NathanDAdlen
      @NathanDAdlen Před 8 lety +1

      +1guyin10 Agreed. Also, the 1st generation (this one) also had a CVT. The current version's transmission is much better.

    • @1guyin10
      @1guyin10 Před 8 lety +1

      nathan adlen The 6 speed auto that they put in most of them now would do much better. Of course I bought the base FWD with the 5 speed manual, which is useless off road. On the other hand it was cheap, surprisingly comfortable and delivers 28+ mpg.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 Před 8 lety +1

      +1guyin10 That patriot was a set of low range gears and a non-CVT transmission away from making it, even with the street tires. I am tempted to take my Cherokee Trailhawk up there, I suspect it will have no issue (low range, locker and proper tires and all)

    • @1guyin10
      @1guyin10 Před 8 lety

      mrvwbug44 Bet it will make it. I've seen the Cherokee Trailhawk do some surprising stuff. For that matter we followed a Renegade Trailhawk around a while back and other than having squat for articulation it did rather well.

      on my 08 liberty I can turn it all the way off. tells you how to do it in the manual. you hold the button for 5 secs. switches it off. I know even my liberty could have done it. I blame it on the street tires and operating error. but iv never owned a patriot

    • @bansheezs
      @bansheezs Před 8 lety

      +TheWeakLink101 you can't disable the brake lock differentials. I think even if there was a way to disable them, there would be no way to get those spinning tires sending their power to the wheels with traction.
