- This video was caught on the Hilton Cam of News Channel 3 as it crossed the state line into Tennessee. You can see the metro Memphis area and the I-240 loop in the foreground. The lights go out later in the video and you can see the tornado hitting power lines as they explode. This is the one that supposedly hit the mall.
I didnt know this was an F4 either. I was in Hickory Hill when it hit, nearly killed me! It was multiple mutli vortex tornadoes, not just 1 tornado. The one that hit the mall was huge and I saw it descending right over the roof of the mall before it swung around and hit Rafferty's and Taco Bell. But I saw atleast 3-4 tornados on the ground simultaneously that day.
It was a F2
@@kevincrain1463 f2 sounds more like what I saw. Maybe low f3 at some points
@@mentlinc I wonder will Memphis ever see anything like that again?
You must be thinking of the Jackson, TN twister. This one in the vid was an EF2
@@kevincrain1463 I hope not because it happens so fast and unpredictable. I'm ready to find a basement anytime the temp swings over 30 degrees in a day. My gf thinks im traumatized and overreacting but I think I just respect the power of these things she's never seen herself.
News Channel 3 (WREG) is the CBS affiliate in Memphis. As somebody who often watches live streams of storm coverage, it seems to vary from city to city which affiliate is the best -- some places, it is the Fox or NBC channel.
To the person who posted this clip...thank you very much for sharing!
I remember this. I was real worried about this one, since it was headed my way until the winds shifted and took it further east. But seeing it on camera... Wow.
This was the storm I chased about a year ago. I was watching this tornado with other chasers set up in Shelby Farms, on Farm Rd.
First chase ever. First tornado I've ever seen.
news channel 3 offers the best coverage during severe weather
This is my first time seeing this video. I saw this tornado as it destroyed the Target and Macy’s in Hickory Hill. My husband and I sought safety in the A &R Bar-BQ parking lot across the street. I was terrified!
Amazing...Tornadoes in Feb. This tower cam shot is perfect! Getting viewers attention. Thats what severe weather coverage is all about! Excellent job covering the tornado!!
So yiur saying tornados are good for people
I didn't know the tornado was that big!
That was a long day. we had about 6 tornados in one day. I remember watching the weather all day and night and wondering what everything was going to look like when I woke up the next morning.
Brian - typically EF5 tornadoes are not survivable unless you have a safe room or take below-ground shelter. Not everyone in Oklahoma has a cellar or safe room. That's how the majority of the people were killed in the 1999 Moore F5.
I live in Lauderdale, so tornadoes usually circle us.. They either hit Dyer,Madison, or Shelby..
But I remember this day clearly.. Our sirens went off for awhile.
i was wondering when someone was going to post this this was the best capture of the tornado in hickory hill I was stuck at work about less than 2 miles from the one on raleigh lagrange.
When was this Video?
I lived at 5689 Mapletree drive and watched this from the living room as it came. It tore parts of the side of the house off and took 3 of my car windows out. When i opened the front door there was roof tin everywhere my garage door was damaged and the smell of gas was terrible, Animals was running everywhere, three people that worked in a warehouse maybe a mile away was killed in this tornado. The Storm tore up History Hill Mall After it hit My house, but me, my brother and nephew made it through with a little damage on the inside of the house. Also this tornado was not my last one. I Thank God Almighty That I'm Still Here As The End Of 2023 Approaches.😊
Is it just me or was it the Hickory Hill area that the tornado affected the most?
+Doobie1975 it was
Is Hickory Hill as bad as many people make it out to be? I know it's nowhere near as great as it once was in the 1980's and much of the 1990's.
+Doobie1975 it wasnt when i was there but the 4 years(2010-14) i was in college it has gotten taken over by hoodlums and gang mentality having males. i now stay in millington tn
That is really bad about how bad the crime in the Hickory Hill area is, I hear the areas south of Shelby Drive in the Hickory Hill area isn't as dangerous as the areas near Winchester Road
+Doobie1975 it was a fucking wreck I lived in hickory hill and it was fucking crazy
I remember this night way too well.
Im a spotter for the National Weather Service in Memphis and also a WREG CH 3 weather spotter...I was giving both the NWS as well as CH 3 info on this storm when it happened.Worst time of day for a tornado rush hour and the sun was setting meaning that the tornado was hard to see besides it being rain wrapped. In a situation like this do not seek shelter under over passes as they act like a wind tunnel and increases the wind speed and easier for debris to hurt or kill someone
It is so sad that the tornado (from Megacell Thunderstorm Cassie [867mbar; 120mph]; retired in 2010 for causing 58 fatalities, 875 injuries, $1.2M in damage; replaced by Colleen) marked the end of prosperity for all of the Shelby County, TN residents...
This same tornado nearly touched down right over my house in Hickory Hill...The Hickory Ridge Mall is only a few blocks down from where I'm at..the Tornado touched down at the intersection of the road beside me! Sounded like a fucking train was coming through the house the doors were rattling and all...my house did not get damaged at all only lost a few roof shingles....and my loved prize....my Basketball goal...DAMN YOU TORNADO!! lol
When is this? Is this when the tornadoes broke out across the country in 2008?
Same here, we never get hit by Memphis storms.
Only some rain.
this storm came toward where i live (east tennesse) i was lucky that a tornado didn't spin up in my neighborhood. there was a tornado warning, but this still gave me the heeby jeebies!
I got cuaght up in that I was comming from Little Rock on my way home to PA. And we had to pull over at a gas station to take cover. Quite crazy.
this someone
hit my town Jackson,TN
took the words right out of my mouth. One fine day a tornado is going to hit one of those 'tornado jams' and lots of people are gonna die!
I guess Austin blew away
i from Memphis TN but i was alive when torando come we move to Canada am gong to miss my hometown
I'm trying to figure out how memphis and oklahoma city are within 50,000 people difference, but hardly anyone died in the memphis tornado, but 40+ died in the OK city tornado!
Getwell and I-55???? It would be nice if the reporters knew where they actually are at when reporting in life threatening situations. Especially since Getwell dosent cross 55. Good job Austin! have another doughnut.
true, but the tornado spun miles outside OKC for over an hour before moving into the city! So they had plenty of warning there too...so I don't get it still!
Yup I live in Memphis
i remember that day, i had just droped my sister off at work then i saw the tornado
dude thta tornado scared the crap out of me
R.I.P taco bell and redlobster lol. my mom and i drove down there a day after and that whole part of winchester was just tore up. it looked like a bomb went off. it was exciting and scary at the same time. at least i got out of school early that day lol.
I never knew if was an F4. But the US uses the EF scale not F scale
that same system dummped a foot of snow in my home town of black earth, WI
This is Tornado Emergency in Memphis TN Shelby County West Tennessee Fayette County West Tennessee and Desoto County North Mississippi
Was vid this bad on air or is it a crappy job of encoding it from the poster..
John Wells Wasn't this bad on air, no.
man when you see the power flashes there basically calling it lighting, when that happens should be saying tornado is on the ground. give more urge to people to take cover
My Goodness they need another camera operator! He can't leave it alone. Every time he has a decent shot, he changes it!!!! Ugggggghhhhhh!
Can't believe it's been 10 years today.
same here
@@tornadopain4624 That Was 11 Years Ago
anywhere close to the south haven area? YOu needed to be in shelter if you are in MEMPHIS period during this!
Few I live in the null road and I have a base (: !!!
I was born there!
I was there, I helped clean up the Mall.. it was wrecked.
What up Mane
It's things like this that make me lucky I live in a basement!
this is sad
Yeah, I was so scared when me and my mom, sister and I were stuck in the Hospital because the dumbass guards were making the beginning of the storm/tornado to be worse than it was, then, after it was getting worse they finally let us go home. :/ But yeah, it was pretty bad. It destroyed the hickory ridge mall and one of the buildings by stateline and exxon/walgreens.
I saw articles that say that the mall was reopened
Memphis is a great city !!!!!
Channels 32.1 and 24.1 dont have enough commercial ya think ya can put more commercial on there there not quite enough commercial
Pause right at 0:11 power surge
i live on given avenue, of memphis tennesee, it always miss us, but it'll hit us one day ):
@Brian211978
Because of advanced warnings Brian...
WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE MEMPHIS?! FUCKIN' HELL!!!
LOL, that struck me odd too. I broke out a map and everything trying to figure out where the hell Austen was talking about... I feel sorry for him though, because I know he's got to be getting ragged on hard at the station.
-T
P.S. On a side note - UGH, I can't believe I'm agreeing with xsomeguyx101... well, except for on the doughnut bit. Still juvenile! lol.....
me too
i live in collierville missesd me barley
so glade i moved, i swear memphis is cursed
You mean CVRSXD?
It is cursed because of crime, not severe weather
Actually it's pretty catchy it's called 4 live radar as in four working radar. Its channel four in the Detroit area.
And yes it's better
i was so scared
i was praying for the tornado not to hit my home and it didnt but still........i kinda liked the hickory ridge mall =(.......oh and i saw a taco bell destroyed =D
I was a not born but I was in my mom's stomach
This is why I watch Fox 13.
Recently, this channel has gone insane...

Jesus Christ is that a cod Xbox mic?
Fr😂
horrible audio.
no it wasnt
I used to live in Memphis Tennessee
Did u go to Sheffield elementary
lol
We don't have basements in Shelby County.
We do not. The best form of surviving a tornado in Memphis is to place a lot of objects between you and the outside...
