I'd like to give you some more information about our schutterij and schutterijen in the Netherlands (particularly Limburg, the province where we are from). 'Schutterijen' in the Netherlands were formed as far back as the Middle Ages, during which they served as a civillian police force. Some also formed a sort of bank where you could get loans. The schutterijen became redundant with the establishment of polices forces and whatnaut and many of theme dissapeared. However some of them were maintained. In the late 19th century there was a renaissance. Schutterijen that were abolished got reinstated and many new schutterijen were established. Howver, they did not serve a military role. From then on schutterijen were established as a folkloristic association. This is also the case for our schutterij. Schutterij St. Joseph Buchten was officially established on 25 october 1882. It has never had any military function, it's all folklore. Today, schutterijen in the Netherlands can mainly be found in the provinces Limburg (where Buchten is located), North-Brabant and Gelderland. Although there's quite a distinctive difference. Schutterijen in North-Brabant and Gelderland are mainly dressed like medieval guilds, whereas most schutterijen in Limburg are dressed in a military uniform, as are we. Over the years we've had different types of uniforms. Since 16 february 1979 we are dressed in the uniform of the music band of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps. Our schutterij consists of several different components. 1. Bordjesdrager. This is a young child carrying a small banner or plate with the name of the schutterij. 2. Drum major 3. Music corps: in our case consisting of snare drums, bass drum, cymbals, trumpets, bass trumpets and sousaphones. 3. Vaandel (Banner). The 'Vaandel' is compulsory for all schutterijen. A schutterij is not allowed to march without the banner being present. 4. King. Every year, a schutterij organizes the so called koningschieten (literally King shooting). During this event, members of the schutterij shoot at a 'bird'. This of course is not a real bird. This is either a wooden bird, or, like with us, a wooden plate featuring an image of a bird. Whoever manages to shoot down the 'bird' is king for a year, and will wear the 'King's silver'. Every king buys his own commemorative silver plate. This plate is added to the king's silver. If someone manages to shoot down the bird for three consecutive years, that person becomes Emperor. A second 'bird' will then be shot to determine who will be king for the upcoming year. So the emperor doesn't serve as a substitute for the king. The schutter will remain emperor until someone else manages to shoot down the bird three years in a row. When the schutter who is the emperor passes away or leaves the schutterij, he will no longer be the emperor and the position is left vacant. So far, we've had 2 emperors during our existense. Currently the position is vacant, although our current king has managed to shoot down the bird for two consecutive years. The've got different ranks: Captain, Luitenant, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel and General. 6. Commander. Although the commander is an officer, he doesn't march among the other officers. 7. Geweerdragers ('gun carriers') The geweerdragers can be seen as the troops of the schutterij. Yearly we participate in all kinds of different events. Not only do we participate in the oktoberfest parade as in this video, we participate in numerous parades, tattoos, serenades and other activities. In Limburg, several local governing bodies exist which all organize their own championships. These championships consist of a number of 'schuttersfeesten' (feest literally means party). During these schuttersfeesten the schutterij participates in several activities like the parade (in which several things are judged, like order and discipline). The points awarded for al the different disciplines plus the point gather in the shooting competition give the point total for the schutterij. The schutterij with the most points, has won the schuttersfeest. The schutterij with the most points at the end of the season, is crowned champion. Next to these local schuttersfeesten, there are 2 greater schuttersfeesten in which whe participate each year. The Zuid-Limburgs Federatiefeest (ZLF) (schuttersfeest for all schutterijen from the south of the Dutch province of Limburg) and the Oud Limburgs Schuttersfeest (OLS) (literally Old Limburgish Schuttersfeest) About 60-65 schutterijen compete in the Zuid-Limburgs Federatiefeest. This schuttersfeest has been organized since 1949, when he had the honour of organizing the first ever ZLF. In 2012 we organized the ZLF for a second time. The ZLF has more or less the same structure as the local schuttersfeesten. Since it's establishment in 1949, we've managed to win the ZLF over 10 times, with last years ZLF being our most recent succes. Next to this we've also been invited by several organisations to participate in their parade. For instance, we participated in parades in Amsterdam in 2015, Mönchangladbach (Germany) in 2000, Vienna (Austria) in 1987, Genk (Belgium) in 1992 and a special parade on the NATO military base in Geilenkirchen (Germany) in honour of the 25th anniversary of the AWACS airplanes.
