  • My guest today is Jeannie Fontana. Jeannie is the CEO of the TREAT California Initiative. TREAT is a statewide initiative that would create a $5 billion funding agency for psychedelic research, which has proven highly effective for conditions like PTSD and Depression. Jeannie was a founding member of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, which performs stem cell research. She has also advocated on behalf of patients with Lou Gehrig's disease.
    Jeannie and I talk about her background in medicine, toxicology and biochemistry. We talk about how she got into psychedelic research and doing psychedelics herself. I talk about my own experiences with psychedelic drugs, and much more.

    Psychedelics killed my drug and alcohol dependencies - one trip two years ago to purge my depression and chronic anxiety from my system was the best decision I ever made. I've done LSD a few times since, but after my last high dose trip I realized that the medicine has taught me enough for now. I might return to psychedelics later in my life if I ever find a source.

      In the LSD experience, we are aware of being more our self and less our self (and this can be actualised, moment by moment during the trip) then we're ever capable of experiencing without the mind expansion that LSD provides us.
      The work that is done, (that is; mentally spiritually emotionally) is so “individual" a thing, but the final effect can be understood and acknowledged amongst the community of others who have taken a trip on LSD. I think that makes sense, I tried to say it in a way that others who haven't taken LSD may understand. I hope I was successful.

      I've listened to many trip reports, books, talks on psychedelics before taking a proper dose myself. It's impossible to understand their effects on you unless you experience it directly. It does something physical to the brain, no amount of consuming information about them can even come close to trying them yourself.

    I did MDMA and LSD two weeks ago on my cottage at the beach alone. Truly a profound experience. Last week I did psilocybin with my friends at the same place. Awesome trip. When I think of these things and ponder their effect on me and my mental clarity and well being...it is obvious that they have made a sublime effect.

      Interesting. We went through all that as kids in school and have never felt the impetus to repeat. I'm glad we did it and I think it broadened us. And no negative effects to me and my friends at least that are evident some fifty years later.

    She mentions "PTSD" a lot. I always see that as a red flag as there are professionals in a certain camp of thinking who see so many things as "traumatic" that the term no longer has meaning.

    • @ReverseTranscriptase
      @ReverseTranscriptase Před 10 měsíci +1

      One thing is PTSD is real, but it is quite fleeting and rarely permanent if the trauma is relatively minor as compared to things that war veterans experience for example. For this reason, using this type of therapy specifically for PTSD should be very measured and considered. A lot of people I think are genuinely too straight-edge or (thankfully) _not traumatized enough_ to benefit from therapy like this... at the very least it won't help them very much... and I think some of these more autistic straight-edge people may actually have downsides from a lot of proposed therapy, especially the more esoteric forms like DMT/Hapé (which is a deliriant technically, but people who use psychedelic therapy often partake in other things like this and seem to think there is crossover for therapeutic use). One thing I don't like is a lot of the people offering this therapy don't seem to like no for an answer - there is almost a disappointment from the offerers often when you deny this therapy, when realistically they should be happy if you feel you don't need it. I don't want to lose my anxiety if it is a tool that I have learned to use for my benefit... it only becomes a problem when the current harmony in my life and mind is upset - which is rare and typically avoidable with proper precautions.

    Regarding ketamine, I did it through telehealth. Similar to Dr. Fontana, I did not have insight. I got very high for about 40 minutes.
    I don't mind getting high but I can do that on my own. I look forward, who knows when, to experience some other psychedelic.

      Universal love does seem weird. I mean compassion, concern, empathy and kindness can be good to cultivate, I think. But love is about attachment to a particular person who stands out as special to you. I think universal love seems to be fake.

    All this talk of “self-love.” The mark of every addict is selfishness. We don’t need more of that. And let’s talk about those embryonic stem cells-where you getting those? If you have to kill to get those, it sure seems like a zero sum game. I thinNk you two were getting higher and higher as the show went on. Sounded more and more like Bill and Ted.

    We shouldn’t be surprised that people who do drugs advocate for drugs. And the shamelessness of wanting the tax payer to pay for your high? Coleman. You’re a good dude. But you need to stop this. Good dude+fame+drugs=early death. We love ya-don’t get wrapped up in this stuff. We’ve lost too many good people to drugs.
