- The Pirates of Penzance arrive at the Major-General's home ready for battle.
What is The Pirates of Penzance (1983) about?
Frederic (Rex Smith), who has spent his formative years as a junior pirate, plans to mark his 21st birthday by breaking free from the Pirate King (Kevin Kline) and beginning his courtship of Mabel (Linda Ronstadt). But because he was born on Feb. 29, a date that only arrives every fourth year, Frederic isn't technically 21 -- and the Pirate King is still his master. Unless something gives, Frederic will soon be on a collision course with the Pirate King's new nemesis: Mabel's father.

Kevin Kline was a beast in his prime. His knees probably hate him now though.
He passed away of AIDS about 40 years ago. He was a wonderful actor though and it’s a shame he isn’t alive today
@@finnbuckley628 Kevin Kline is still alive. You're probably thinking of someone else.
I was thinking the same. I was thinking no way he would be able to do this now by dragging his knees, even with boots on. lol
For someone who doesn't want to be a pirate, or apart of this mission, Frederic is incredibly dedicated to this dance number. 😂
Heh...maybe thats the point, he's trying to make the pirates critically fail their silent sneak. Of course, the general is so deaf to the sound that the tactic didn't work lol.
Professionals have standards. You don’t disrupt the musical number
COMMIT TO THE BIT.
He will always do his duty
Duty first and foremost
When the party rolls a 1 in Stealth, but the bad guys rolled 1 on perception
More like the party rolled a nat 20 on stealth and are rubbing it in.
1 in stealth, but nat 20 in performance
OMG!!
Trying to not laugh my freakin' head off since I'm at work, but *Bravo* to the best laugh I've had in weeks.
(Doesn't help that I've been re-reading Order Of The Stick)
Their bard is definitely hitting all nat 20s
When the party is all Bards, and they picked up the "Pass Without Trace" spell via their "Magical Secrets" class feature to sing and dance their way into flawless stealth.
I'm not saying Kevin Kline chewed up EVERY scene he was in...he unhinged his jaw, swallowed the scene whole, and let the rest of us watch as he digested.
That being said, I've watched this clip hundreds of times, and it always brings a smile to my face.
There was a famous NYT review of the original of TPoP that said something to the effect of "it would be impossible for even a confirmed misanthrope to refrain from merriment" while watching
😂
Kevin Kline was 50% Athlete, 50% Dancer, 100% Performer.
A certain percentage singer too.
Gotta love classic theater for taking a relatively simple joke and making a big ol' production number outta it!!!
this song always cracks me up, I'm never not amused by it... pretty cool something written 145 years ago is still hilarious
I don’t get it. The set design is nice, but why did you upload a video that doesn’t have anyone in it? And it was so quiet I think I could distinctly hear a fly’s footfall.
Have you tried restarting your device?
Usually has a 1/20 chance of at LEAST being able to hear something other than flies walking around...
(😂)
1:49 "The Opera is tomorrow night"
I shouldn’t have watched this again, but I can’t resist. This song will be in my head for days, as always.
I can barely hear the music or see the actors, I think they're being too stealthy. Maybe throw in a cannon so I know where they are?
As a performer, I can tell you, this number... if done right... will get an ovation every time. If it is done like this here... it should bring the house down. I agree... Kline was a beast in his day. Happy TLAP Day ya pestilent pollywogs!
We just got done doing Pirates of Penzance and I loved this number. We had the police in the house waiting or us, it was a good time.
That’s not even the half of it! If your audience is particularly rowdy, expect to do the last part again. And again. And again. And again. AND. A. GAIN.
A party of multiclass pirate/bards nailing every stealth check by repeatedly giving each other inspiration
Unironically in 5e I wish that instead of getting Expertise, bards instead got an ability that let them make a Charisma (Performance) check in place of a normal check for some skills they choose.
Meaning yes, choose Stealth and it means they instead of rolling Dex (Stealth), you roll Cha (Performance).
@@RogueShadowsthat wound get op
@@greenrandall143 I mean it's still dependent on you rolling well for Cha (Performance).
It's just meant to be an alternative to them getting Expertise, which I'd rather see as a Rogue-class exclusive ability, or else have a feat tax.
@@RogueShadows yeah but it is there best ability. Imagine if a barbarian could do that with strength. I don’t know to much about dnd so I could be misunderstanding it or getting some stuff worng. If you run it that way and works for you then that is great, I just think form my limited perspective that can be a bit overpowered
Those are some impressive pipes, for people who are allegedly trying to be unseen and unheard.
Pete: The opera? It’s tomorrow night? 0:32
"I think that ditty's beginning to grow on me."
Pete's real crime in that film was that he interrupted the show before THIS number started 🤣
...*blink, blink*...
That song never gets old
Name a better 1983 pirate musical with Angela Lansbury. Pro tip: can't be done.
Angela Lansbury automatically makes everything better.
I enjoy all of the movie every time I watch it. I am grateful that this movie was made. But i want to express my appreciation of Linda Ronstadts appearance with her magnificent voice. Thank you!
Ive always been so distracted by Kevin Kline jumping around that I never noticed Rex Smith jumping over his sword at 2:30
If you check out the Broadway version with Kevin Kline and Rex Smith, RS pulls some straight out of Fosse moves.
Who else just realized that Backyardigans used this tune for quest of the flying Rock 😆
Omg I forgot about Backyardagains... Well that just makes them tasteful now doesn't it?
I did
Why’d you upload a totally silent video?
Um, it's not silent? I can hear it totally fine. Maybe it was a glitch?
@@glambertgurl1117(it was a joke about the Pirates singing about needing to be as quiet as possible)
@@jst7714 Oops, well now I understand lol. Sorry about that. My autistic brain doesn't get very obvious jokes sometimes lmao.
1:53 Kevin Kline realizing he's in the wrong hedgerow and such a pro, just FIXES IT and saves the scene.
Fredric opposite him does the same thing. It was intended. It’s funny.
It's part of the song. The switch happens on the lyric 'twist of navigation'
I have a hard time taking my eyes off Kevin Kline anytime he's on the screen.
The lyric is actually “truce to navigation, take another station”
I NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE!!! Have seen this movie a dozen times!
0:32 Cuando la opera es mañana
Did anyone else notice that Kevin Kline discarded his bandana at 2.22? I'm guessing it's because he feared it could come down over his face when doing the ensuing cossack squats. I absolutely love this clip and Kline is immense.
Good catch
The spiritual precursor to Secret Mission from Galavant
0:32 the opera’s tomorrow night
That little ditty's starting to grow on me.
Soooooo ...... they have to enter that house quietly... without making any noise you say? Mmmm
Using bardic inspiration to get advantage on a stealth roll.
They'll never say a word. May sing a few bars, tho.
0:31 THE OPERA IS TOMORROW NIGHT
“That little ditty is starting to grow on me.”
In a musical, songs are sung to the audience. All characters not in the song can't hear it. So to be stealthy, sing a song about how stealthy you are and how no one can hear you. SIng extra loud so no one can hear you. Accompany yourself with trumpets.
A regional group, Heartland Opera Theatre Company, is performing this in two weeks! I can hardly wait!!!❤❤❤❤
Angela Lansbury caught by surprise!
Love it opera with humor!
Anybody hear something?
“La ópera es mañana.”0:32
Esa cancioncita ya esta gustándome
These guys are so loud!!
FAVORITE
Her: He’s probably out cheating
Me and the bois:
International Talk Like A Pirate Day is upon us, ye Scurvy Dogs!
19 September lol 🏴☠️
This is the zaniest thing I've ever seen.
"Who's there?"
La ópera es mañana.
Well they're not really burglars dear!
Where's Norm MacDonald?
I believe this number killed maximalism. There was no up to go from here, so minamilism was the only option. "Skeletonic Key?" f'real?
There's a full tonic resolution before the key change ffs.
Apparently Gilbert and Sullivan often fell out with each other over one having to change the music to fit in the others lyrics.
No matter how good the performances are, stage plays on film almost always are the worst of both worlds.
Shame they don't have a real orchestra. The synthesized backing track is just awful,
