Met Kelly briefly apx 90/91. He was in town PSSA Bud tour at Salt Creek. Think Pat O won . Anyhow there was a keg at Stairs early eve and after introducing myself offered to get him a beer. He replied " No thanks Bro , I gotta surf" . Or something like that. Only time I ever ran into him. But as I am 6months older than Kelly and lifetime Slater fan. But 35 something years later still a bit of a functioning lush, and still surfing, his words often ring in my head. Especially when I wax up a board that has triple the liters as my boards back then. Won't give up my cervezas or holas until I die though . Great job guy's. Somehow just found guy's as well as Bass and Scales cast this year. Now I watch them both weekly. Thanks for putting all together. Grateful Dead (just like surfing, once you get a true taste, it's for life. Appreciate

New Ken from the early/mid 70’s. He was driven to be a pro surfer. Would surf Big onshore Sunset with Charlie S. 59:38 He knew the big wave path was his in. Glad to hear he’s doing well!
Totally relate to your experience with alcohol. I figure they’re called spirits because they have unique effects - you become imbued with a certain spirit depending on the one you drink. Gin is known to be a depressive, and is the manic depressives tipple of choice. For me, tequila is spicy, rum is happy, vodka is delusional, and whisky is angry. So it’s choose your own adventure! It’s funny looking back, but I don’t miss it, having given it up finally in 2015. I started thinking about giving it up in 2004, so it took a minute… 😬

I watched the interview with Mark Parker where he mentioned Pyzel. It wasn’t cool,in my opinion, for he said something about Pyzel himself wasnt even making Jack’s boards. So he did diss John Pyzel. I don’t think he was set up by the question, it did feel like Matt Parker wanted to give that answer, it was intentional, he could have just kept it short by saying he’s been loving shaping boards for Jack and that from the relationship they’ve been having he hasn’t been difficult at all. I don’t think surfing needs this feuds. Rivalry don’t have to be toxic relationships, you can be highly competitive within the playing field and the next moment, say you love the person. If anything, it’s a sign of emotional maturity. Competition is not war. War is not healthy. Why people keep asking for bloodshed through sports?

Stab sucks imo. They are in it for the benjamins and that's never cool or interesting, it's common and ordinary. I thought they were sort of core culture for awhile but I was wrong. Maybe core surf culture monetizers. Chas has a great comment on Pyzel having levels (wolf mode) to keep his place in a competitive landscape. Laird, who I used to find jock like and d-u-m dumb, has grown on me for just doing his thing and not taking silly stuff too seriously; that's usually a person with a solid personal life and some humility. Half your age! Most things in life aren't this and aren't that. Something about a barrel is you did it or you didn't do it and it might be tempting to imagine you did even if you didn't. In Chas's criticisms of the grateful dead experience, and here with old/young relationships, he falls into the predicament of passing judgement on other peoples personal experience, where each individual has too try and find their own happiness and sense of place and connection. These aren't people really needing to be generally criticized because they will run the gamut. Homeless people: barrel or nah? Slater got a section but no WSL in this episode. If you guys are making money on this I hope you invest it in the Journalism side; I'm always drawn to that sort of information. Maybe hire hackers or insiders (or find true believers) and do a SurferLeaks website? Like WikiLeaks was meant to be but for surfers: anonymous posting of financial info, excel spreadsheets, personal texts, scandalous emails, commercial double dealings, document inappropriate behavior, gatekeeping, sexy photos and candid videos). I like the show more when it's less Chas's hot takes and more a back and forth on a subject or opinion; tease out the nuance more and gain in understanding. Take it from the man.
