  • The transmission of my 2016 CRF 1000 has been feeling and sounding like a bag of marbles recently, so it’s time to change the chain and sprocket.
It’s given over 20,000 miles of service and seen a fair bit of abuse having been used through the wet salty winter of 2022, so I cant complain about that!
I thought I’d take the time to record the process to give other owners an idea if they fancied doing the job themselves.
There is a special tip at the end of the film, that might get you or someone else out of roadside breakdown!!!
I hope you find value in this video, if you do, please give it a wee thumbs up, and if you are a new visitor, you’ll help the channel to reach other owners if you were kind enough to subscribe.

Excellent tutorial Stevie and the editing was very helpful along the way. I also liked the camera tip. I’ll definitely try in the future as it’s a real pain doing stuff only with one hand. All the best!

Thanks very much Marcrobyn. I use the Whale 50S chain tool. Pretty sure it's available globally.

Very well done. Kudos to you 👍. You have set a high bar with short and sweet videos on 'How to ...'. Thank you. What is the little red carrier you use to assist with removing the rear wheel?

Thanks for watching and your kind feedback KKU. Glad they are making an impression out there. The little red carrier is a product made by Abba Stands, it used to be called a wheel lift, but it is no longer on the Abba web site for some reason. The beauty of it is for putting the wheel back in place. When you take the wheel off, you adjust it to the height of the axle, then when you put it back in, it goes in square and at the correct height. It makes getting the brake caliper back on, the axle through, and the spacers in place much easier than trying to support the wheel whilst aligning everything.

@@soggybawsmoto Yeah, I hear ya. I jam my boot under the tire and angle my foot up, but that is a challenge when you are trying to align so many things. I think I'll design something to attach to my low profile jack that can cup the tire.

I modified a set of Honda Varadero wheels to fit it. No mods to the bike, just the wheels, it is a straight swap.
If you have a look at my 50,000 mile review, you will find a link to details of the modifications

Hi Hans, You are never far from the sea in Scotland, however the biggest problem in the UK is the amount of
salt our local authorities use on the roads in the winter. Wasn't so much of a problem with the 90's Hondas though. I believe the trend to extract every cent from production has had a detremental effect t on build quality.
