  • “Even though she didn’t speak much, or didn’t like speaking much about herself or her life, it’s all interwoven. And if you learn to read through the language of abstraction, you also see that the lines are also the lines of a life.” - Pablo León de la Barra, Curator at Large, Latin America, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation
This Guggenheim-produced documentary explores the life and legacy of one of the most significant artists to emerge from Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century.
Gego, or Gertrud Goldschmidt (b. 1912, Hamburg; d. 1994, Caracas), first trained as an architect and engineer at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart (now Universität Stuttgart). Fleeing Nazi persecution in 1939, she immigrated to Venezuela, where she settled permanently, fully embarking on an artistic career in the 1950s that would span more than four decades. In sculptures, drawings, prints, and textiles, Gego traced a markedly individual path through her organic forms, linear structures, and spatial investigations.
This video was created on the occasion of “Gego: Measuring Infinity,” Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, March 31-September 10, 2023.
“Gego: Measuring Infinity” is cocurated by Pablo León de la Barra, Curator at Large, Latin America, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, New York, and Geaninne Gutiérrez-Guimarães, Associate Curator, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, New York.

I am proud about my mother as well. She never did any artwork but she said to me: ''why don't you know that I am an artist, too''. And she was right. After she died last year, she is very famous to me. It's obvious that Guggenheim will be too small for both of us.

Today is Labor Day, which means school is closed. My day started just like any other day off, I woke up around 10 am, I had breakfast, and headed to the gym. The training went alright, not feeling especially strong or tired, I was rushing to finish the sets because I was supposed to hang out with a friend and meet her up at around 11:30am. While I was on the way back home, I got a text message saying "Im dying, my washing machine is giving up on me". The friend hinted to me to give her some time to fix the laundry issue, which I am already used to her being late, so no big deal there. She then messages me saying that the clothes are done washing and the door isn't opening. Oh, remember today is Labor Day? which means no one is answering in the customer's service (it is 12:13pm at this point). "Hey, Im air drying the clothes, just let me put them on the rack", she texted. By the time I finally leave my place and step into the elevator, it is already 1:36pm. We then decided to grab food on the way to our destination because we were both starving, we made a stop at Chelsea for some Chinese food, we had dumplings and noodles. Before hopping back on the subway, we grabbed coffee to go, the receipts printed 2:58pm. We got on the A train and hoped that would lead to Central Park, but instead of getting off at 86th Street, I didn't stop. Eventually, the train stopped at 125th Street, while we had to get on the opposite side of the train to get back to where we were going, we didn't realize that we got on the wrong train again until it stopped at 135th Street. Finally, we got to the opposite train and took the C train heading downtown, stepped off the train at 86th street, walked through the central park, and saw the white structure of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum where we were there for the Gego: Measuring Infinity exhibition by 4:18pm.
