    When I heard Tarja was no longer with NW back in 2005, I almost cried. Tuomas Halopainen may be NW leader, but Tarja was the face of Nightwish. She was the beauty and the band was the beast. It worked perfectly!
    I don't think newer fans of NW fully understand what an impact she had on NW. Nightwish had Tarja!!!!
    Other bands would kill to have had a frontwoman like her. World class vocals. And she looked like a goddess.

    Long story short: Nightwish management vs. Tarja's husband/manager. They were pulling different directions. But cool thing that you did some classic Nightwish! If you are curious about their own songs from Tarja-era, i strongly suggest 'The Siren' or 'Wishmaster' from this same End of An Era-concert :) Cheers!

    Basically there was tension between Tarja and the rest of the band for various reasons, mostly involving her husband. She told them she was going to do one more album and then quit the band. They decided to fire her right away instead. This concert was the last one she ever did with the band in 2005. They didn't get their next singer, Anette until 2007. She left in 2012 and that's when Floor took over the tour and at the end of the tour in 2013 Floor officially joined the band.

      There's a documentary you can watch on youtube called "please learn the setlist in 48 hours" that is all about Floor taking over the tour from Anette in 2012. You can also read the letter the band wrote to Tarja here: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen

    Yes, the fans were devastated not only because they loved Tarja ( and they had good reasons to love her, because of her talent and her charisma ), but also because the band switched to a vocalist who was some levels below Tarja in that operetic style. You can´t say that Anette was a bad singer, but she was more poppy and didn't have the range that Tarja has. But in fact, the two albums they recorded with Anette were very successful and some of the greatest songs of NW are there ( like The Poet and the Pendulum ). But the problem with Anette was in the live performances and you can hear that she didn't even sung her own songs well. Things could have been different if they had switched from Tarja to Floor. Besides, you can see Floor and Tarja singing toghether the Gary Moore's song Over the Hills and far Away, the video is in CZcams ( filmed by tha audience ).

    wow. first :) great reaction. Short Version.....the band fired Tarja is an open letter immediately after they got off the stage at this very show (End of an Era). Her husband became her manager, and she began to focus on her solo career at the expense of not showing up for studio sessions, rehearsals, etc. It split the fan base severely, with some thinking they did the right thing and others believing it was musical suicide. Tuomas, the keyboard player and composer for the band, was a friend of Tarja's since school, and he was devastated at the time. He contemplated suicide, and ended up writing "The Poet and the Pendulum" as a way of coping with the depression and loss.
    Great vid! Stay metal, my dude. \m/

      Cid, you are a bit mistaken there. The band actually claimed in the letter that Tarja NEVER came to the rehearsals BEFORE THE STUDIO RECORDING. In fact that very morning of the last concert, there were reharsals and Tarja was there. In an interview she tells that she was terribly ill in the morning rehearsals and very worried about the evening, because she wasn't able to sing. You have the open letter view, have you heard Tarja's response? See my comment in the root of this page, if you wanna see what I think of Tarja's response to the open letter claims.

    After falling in love with the latest version of Nightwish, your first thought after hearing your first song with Tarja is still that "everybody must've been devastated when she left". I love how kind and embracing and considerate you are - that's why I keep clicking on your Nightwish reactions even though I've barely heard 3 of their songs on my own.

    The first concept for Nightwish was as an acoustic folk band. That is until after inviting the former schoolmate to sing with the band they discovered she had been training operatically and had developed such a powerful voice. The acoustic idea was scrapped and a new sound was crafted around her. Tarja and the band became an inspiration for many other singers and groups.

    I have also really enjoyed this version by Nightwish's 1st lead singer Tarja (pronounced Taria), She is such a talented vocalist, their 2nd singer was Annette (Swedish), she was good also in a few particular songs, then in about 2013 came Floor Jansen (Dutch)`. I personally like them all, they all have their strengths, but for versitility, voice range & dynamic stage presence I would have to always choose Floor. Cheers from another Aussie ! Ian.

    They did this awesome NW style version rock opera and this must be the greatest one. They sing and play the act of the play too so well. This is 2005 End of an Era concert...THIS IS NIGHTWISH (not still) ... they were already world famous and know as a leader of this genre...in 2005 during this very concert...and mostly this very line up made it possible from a school band to world leader. Only later came substitutes and replacements to the ready set table and whole concept created by this line up to exist. That is important to know...the growing process is the most difficult and challenging and they are to be respected also for that. Copying is easy later on. Leaving of Tarja is a long story but it influenced so deep that Tuomas was about to end NW as a band too - fortunately not. Later three special songs emerged for that. Poet and the Pendulum, Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed. Just ask how many earlier song do reflect to the persons in the band. Later Tuomas changed themes to imagination and natural sciences not being so close to his personal passions and life...just quess why.

    Awesome stuff. First time I saw it I was blown away too. Immediately bought the DVD I was so impressed. Others have already said it before I got here so you know by now it was basically Tarja's husband that caused the problems as much as anything. Greed quickly ruins a good thing. Lots of fans thought Tarja could never be replaced, but she was. Nightwish did well with Annette, although they did take a bit of a different direction for a while with her. Things turned kind of dark and angry for a while in their music. I wasn't a huge fan of how Annette's voice blended with the rest of the band. I just felt like she struggled to keep up with their large sound, and her voice was kind of bright and brassy too which I just didn't feel sounded quite right with metal music. Just my opinion. Lots absolutely loved her and that's well and good because it kept Nightwish going. They eventually decided it was best to move on from Annette and then we got Floor. Now all seems right in the world to me again. Floor definitely can hang with the boys and match their intensity. Live she is just so darn good! Anyway, enjoyed your reaction to this one! Tarja will always be a special part of the NW history. She's the one that helped me fall in love with Nightwish, so I'll always appreciate that.

    But I've discovered NW around 2007 and even though I believe Floor is perfect for the band and yes, indeed, my favorite of all three singers (as she can sing in all styles), Tarja's voice will forever speak to my soul as well.
    And Anette's too, especially on songs like Scaretale (her best NW song), the last minute of Meadows of Heaven and Slow, Love, Slow and especially the Escapist (best Anette song, imo and in my top 3 NW songs of all times).

    There is also a documentary of their The end of an era tour called A Day Before Tomorrow that You can see a lot of the behind the scenes drama and the band & Tarja not getting along, it's also a sad movie . If you listen or react to The poet and the pendulum, you will understand the impact of the story on Tuomas ( the main song writer and composer of nightwish ) and othe members of the band. Basically in a open letter, Tuomas mentioned her attitude and behavior and some quotes from Tarja that she claims that she do not need Nightwish ! and she could leave this band at any time, giving him only one day's warning in advance ! so that was the story and it is very sad. Tarja is classically trained and she is one of the best operatic voces and singers but they have now Floor that has a very beautiful voce and a great vocal ability and also a perfect stage presence which fits exactly a wonderful metal band like nightwish . Thank you for this reaction ! greate as always

    • @stefanl5183
      @stefanl5183 Před 5 lety +2

      A Day before Tomorrow is a propaganda movie. Look at the credits. It's filmed, edited, etc, by Ewo Pohoja. He's the opportunist who worked for the record label, weaseled his way into taking control of the band, plied tuomas with alcohol, knowing tuomas had an alcohol problem and exploited his jealously toward Tarja's husband to turn him against her and her husband. When there was conflict, he was right in the middle of it and even instigated most of it. He's the person who started the big argument in the Toronto airport, when he reduced Tarja to tears saying nasty things to her about her husband while they were waiting for their plane. The whole End of an Era DVD is part of the drama play and is an exploitation of it. That's why Tarja and Marcelo were reluctant to agree to release it.
      A better documentary to take a look at is the End of Innocence DVD. There you will see more truth. You'll see tuomas alcoholism and how the guys spent most of their time drunk, which is the real reason Tarja didn't spend as much time with them. You'll also see and hear tuomas recount the original story of how Nightwish was founded. He talks about it in detail and tells of how his and Emppu's original plan of doing a folk music project turned into a metal band when they got together with Tarja and began to record. Basically Tarja, served as the inspiration behind the entire concept that would become Nightwish. The End of Innocene's DVD is here on CZcams for anyone who wants to hear the real story before tuomas was turned against Tarja!

    There will always be something special about the early eras for me, because that's the first I heard of Nightwish. Tarja's barely a year older than me, and Anette really favors a lot of the girl rock that I was already big on, so there's some sisterhood aspects there. I still think Floor is awesome, I just haven't had the time to relate to her just yet. It'll likely still be a little different, but she's a sweetie, so I'm sure it'll happen and that it won't take long. Also, ( and this is a minimal thing, I care more that the band rocks and has an amazing lady to sing lead.) Tarja always wore such pretty dresses. I love that a lot of these symphonic front women do that or do old school like Renaissance, or Floor's valkyrie outfit. I would so rock something like that if I were singing for a band like this.

Compare Annette in the music video of 'Storytime' to Floor's live performance at Wacken- I actually think Annette's is better.
      While she can't match Tarja's power or Floor's versatility, she still an excellent singer.

      @artursruseckis4242 Před 5 lety

      @@GlennWH26 That's what my last sentence was there for.
      To enjoy Nightwish at its best, you have to see it live. And Anette was not up to it. Yes, her voice was lovely, yes Tuomas managed to make songs that suited Anettes voice and they were still more or less Nightwish-y and thus - enjoyable... but... only on a studio record. On live stage... well... let's just say, she is neither Floor nor Tarja.
      And I do not want to say that she's bad. She might be an excellent singer. it's just sucks for her that she always will be compared to Tarja and Floor, which probably is not fair since they both are arguably best female metal vocalists so far. Anette could be even third best (well, she's not, but just for argument's sake assume she might be), but it would still be so distant third...

    The thing with Tarja was that she was pretty good in singing operatic parts and she did a good job on the studio albums. I was never convinced when seeing her live. She is not very "rock" or "heavy", and not such a great frontwoman as Floor. Floor is so much more with different singing styles (could anyone even think about Tarja doing growls...?) and more passion in her voice. Plus the appearance which fits better for a metal band.

    Great reaction! It’s cool to see more and more people delving into the world of Symphonic Metal.
    Since so many people are already giving you so much Nightwish info and song suggestions, may I throw another band your way? Same genre, a little different, perhaps a little on the heavier side of Symphonic Metal.
    Epica, which has been a favorite of mine for just over a decade. “Consign To Oblivion” (live at Zenith is best...this is the longest of my suggestions), “Sancta Terra” ft. Floor Jansen (at Retrospect, best version), or “The Essence Of Silence” live version. Many people who suggest them will also suggest their song “Cry For The Moon”, but personally I think it’s a little overdone and I think people need to hear a more current version of the band before seeing their early stuff.
    Have a great day!

    So you have a special kind of magic happening here. Two incredibly strong vocalists working together. There’s a credibility thing that happens as well. I don’t care how many male opera singers you can show me as The Phantom, they just can’t quite make the believability happen. Whereas with Marco, you can absolutely see him as The Phantom if you were listening without watching. His raw, gritty vocals make him credible as The Phantom. :) Huge Nightwish fan here, I like all 3 vocalists for their individuality they bring. There are plenty of Tarja fans out there, and the hate they brought against Annette was incredibly rude and just uncalled for. Be angry with Tuomas and the rest of the band, ultimately they made the decision to fire Tarja.

    Wishmaster LIVE (czcams.com/video/eJTlH521E6w/video.html) harder metal side with Tarja's operatic vocals;
    Nemo LIVE (czcams.com/video/UnWUYF1PZ00/video.html)
    Sleeping Sun LIVE (czcams.com/video/E_RRMRXJWxI/video.html) operatic ballad
    End of All Hope LIVE (czcams.com/video/ESlyjQl90p0/video.html)
    The second singer was Annette who was more of a Pop/Studio voice who was great on the ballads:
    Meadows of Heaven ( czcams.com/video/vxsjv6LtRz0/video.html)
    Slow, Love, Slow (czcams.com/video/t6l4H689FtM/video.html) the NW version of smooth jazz
    The Crow, The Owl and The Dove (czcams.com/video/Upt8_tPYIl0/video.html)

    Tarja ('j's pronounced as a 'y') wanted to leave after the next album (Dark Passion Play, which became Annette's first), and the rest of the band felt she was just going through the motions with an eye on the exit, so rather than drag it out, they decided to fire her in an open letter right after this concert.
    This period led to Tuomas writing Poet and the Pendulum (about his subsequent depression), Bye Bye Beautiful (about his views on Tarja) and Master Passion Greed (about Tarja's husband/manager being...not exactly a stand up fella).
    I feel Tarja is the better opera singer (her voice has actually become better (and more diverse) since then - check out her cover of Muse's Supremacy), but Floor has the broader range, and adds a lot more colour to a lot of their older songs (Floor's take on Ghost Love Score is superior by some distance).
    Personally prefer some songs with Tarja (Stargazer, Sleeping Sun, Dark Chest of Wonders, Wish I Had an Angel, Wishmaster), and others with Floor (GLS, She Is My Sin, Romanticide, Everdream).

    @esakoivuniemi Před 5 lety +5

    Yaw dropper, eh? Nice reaction.
    Reason for Tarja leaving the band? Well, there's a two sides obviously, so take this with a grain of salt. As the story goes, Tarja's husband Marcelo "seduced" her to pursue a solo career (for a better paycheck, supposedly). Tarja told the band she had decided to leave after the tour or maybe after the next album and tour. The band felt she wasn't fully on board anymore and decided to kick her out. From the bands point of view the real culprit was/is Tarja's husband.
    Their next album, Dark Passion Play, is quite gloomy and heavy. The album has at least three songs allegedly related to this. "Master Passion Greed" is "dedicated" to Marcelo and "Bye Bye Beautiful" to Tarja. Finally "The Poet And The Pendulum" is supposedly about depression the keyboard player Tuomas went through. All three are really, I mean really great songs.

    • @nebucamv5524
      @nebucamv5524 Před 5 lety +2

      Tarja wanted to leave because of the treatment of the guys she had to suffer from. They didn't really care about her and ignored her most of the time. They didn't even want her to take part in the process of creating new songs. She wasn't welcome (the same happened later to Anette and to Floor, but Floor didn't accept that, she said, either she is allowed to join them or she will leave the band, thus the guys let her take part). Already in the year 2000 she was thinking about leaving Nightwish because she felt very alone. Then she got to know Marcelo, her later husband, and that was actually the reason she stayed. She wasn't alone anymore, finally there was someone who cared about her.
      Something very revealing happened in the year 2000. While being on stage Tarja was attacked by someone in the audience, and in horror and crying, of course, she ran off the stage. You should expect, that the guys immediately made a break and accompanied her to comfort her and make sure she's alright. Do you know what? They didn't. They did not even make a five minute break and didn't look after her. Instead they told Marcelo, whom she'd know for only 9 days(!!!), to take care for her. And they went on playing as if nothing had happened. Can you imagine such a heartless behaviour? Until today I'm heartbroken about it and don't understand what made them so cold-hearted.

    Most people will tell you the story of the open letter written by the band, from their angle. I have watched Tarja's whole long press confrence in Finnish, so my take will be different. IMHO the open letter was biased, and even misleading at parts. They had fought during the previous world tour because they were too heavy for Tarja, she wanted less gigs and the boys wanted more. Tarja was worried about her voice and health and she saw them faling during the tours. She said next world tour she would not tour but two weeks at a time, this is found in the open letter too, and the band found it problematic. Their relationships broke during the last world tour, and Tarja became disconnected from the band, their working together became difficult. She told the band that she would retire after the next album's world tour. The band thought however it's better to do it now.
    Yeah they said rather nasty things in the letter, and Tarja did debunk and gave backgrounds to the claims. For example they told the Oslo gig was an "ultimate example" of Tarja breaking her promises and underestimating her fans. They claimed Tarja rather hang out with her friends, went to movies and vocal rehearsals. But Tarja told the band had kept her in the dark, she didn't know the concert was happening before it was sold out. She had made previous plans, but she cancelled those, went to the concert and sang there. This part was left out from the open letter. If it was the ultimate example, then I'd say they had thinly examples.
    Another misleading thing was the greed claim. It's not backed by any details. Nightwish has always shared profits from the gigs and songs evenly between everyone. What she did try, was to cut the small gigs and have fewer bigger concerts instead - because she wanted less performances - thus the claim in the letter that Tarja always wanted more money from the gigs. Sure, the band needed the money: if she wanted to cut gigs, then the remaining needed to be bigger. She also suggested cutting the USA from the world tour, because the band was still practically unknown in the USA and the gigs would be small. Wanting to cut the amount of gigs does not spell like greed to me. There was another reason, which the letter omitted entirely.
    Were the misleadings in the letter dishonesty, or were they just bias being other side in the arguments? Well, hard to say. Anyway it was badly done, and in 2015 interview Tuomas admitted it: "with Tarja we handled things extremely un-professionally. Things went as they needed to go, but the way it was done was bad. All of us can admit that." "But in that situation, everyone acted wrong, it was very badly managed situation." (Translations are mine from Finnish language).
    I used to think that the boys had reasons to kick Tarja out. But I don't buy it any more. IMHO Tarja's take makes much more sense, and it is backed by what is found in the letter.

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi Před 5 lety +2

      One more thing. The open letter told Tarja said she was just a visiting musician in the band. The open letter told this as her fault, her lack of dedication. Tarja had an opposite view. She told that the band never let her participate planning or managing the band. She said she is the type who wants to know what is going on, but it was kept from her - in fact she spoke quite a lot about it. If that's the case, I don't wonder if she said she felt like a visiting musician.

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi Před 5 lety

      Oh, remembered yet another thing. The open letter said Tarja never came to the rehearsals before the studio album. I've seen claims Tarja never rehearsed with the band. I just recently saw an interwiev from Tarja where she was talking about their last concert (the one where "Phantom of Opera" was reccorded too). She was so ill in the morning rehearsals that day, that she couldn't sing, and it made her very nervous. So obviously it wasn't complete absence of rehearsals, but the absence before going to studio. BTW, Floor wasn't invited either when the band was finalizing Tuomas' composed songs. By her own account, she went to see the band just to say them "hi" when they were doing that, but when there, she wanted to try singing them: they found it useful, and she remained there while they were finalizing the songs.

    • @Piia2023
      @Piia2023 Před 5 lety

      The main problem was Tarjas GREDY husband, he was the man who almost destroyed Nightwish. He made decision in Nightwish name that he had nothing to do with. He asked for more money for concerts so they had concerts cancelled because of that. He would have sold Tarjas soul for money. He destroyed a friendship Tarja and Tuomas had, he turned Tarja against Tuomas, so in the end it was that, they had to get rid of him first of all, and to do that they had to get rid of her too. And about Floor...probably yes turned up to say just hi...but she had also "done her homework" as Tuomas said, she knew all the songs and lyrics already, yes so she started rehearsing with them.

    There will be more than one side to the story, for sure. Part of the Tarja side is that it is alleged that the tour managers were very bad at making sure the whole band was looked after on tours. The boys (and the manager) were very focused on the partying and alcohol side in order to chill out, and Tarja had an operatic voice that she had to look after, so couldn't take part in this. As her manager, Marcelo (later her husband) argued that she could and should get repaid for the money that she wasn't spending on this. He was also keen that she should have proper facilities to shower, sleep, a decent hotel and that she should be safe. She was seriously assaulted on stage once because the band's people had not paid for proper security. It caused conflict between him and the band's tour manager. Hence the accusations that Tarja only cared about money.

Obviously there's even more than that - why she left immediately after this concert and the way she left, but it's a long and sad story and there's even a 3rd party person who was very much involved in that messy soup.
