    Ahoy mates! Whether you are applying to Cambridge soon, contemplating or are simply curious and confused, I've GOTCHU!😇 The collegiate system at Cambridge took me quite a while to wrap my head around. I struggled to understand how you could have 31 different colleges, and what that even means in the context of my degree. 🤯
    In this video, I breakdown what the collegiate system means as well as why you should care about which college you pick in your application. I also address some common misconceptions and caveats to remember. 🤓
    DISCLAIMER: I am not a Cambridge Admissions officer. I myself am a Cambridge student and the topics presented in this video are based upon my own experiences, opinions and research. If you have any specific admissions questions, please direct them to admissions@cam.ac.uk

    I hadn't realised you didn't originally apply to Girton so that's great that it turned out to have good vegan food. This would be a significant factor for me!
    Are there differences in how the colleges accomodate students after first year? So for example are you living in college next year or out somewhere? If there are colleges where you can live in every year (don't know if there are) I would suggest to applicants there's a trade-off between convenience in college and the valuable experience of having your own shared house with friends, which is like a whole 'nother part of student life you get to encounter in second year. Pro tip: keep on top of the washing up.
    Are any colleges more or less international in their student populations, or how they integrate internationals with the UK students for example in room allocation? Colleges can get cliquey in the first term as friendship groups rapidly form (though those groups often then rearrange over the course of first year) and there must be a happy medium between retaining contact between international students who can relate to each other's experiences, while also making it possible for UK and overseas students to integrate and get to know each other. I had little contact with international students as an undergrad (from the UK) and regret that.
    Ultimately there are pros and cons to whatever you choose and any applicant watching/reading this should not stress too much about finding the perfect college, as it doesn't exist. But if you get the chance to visit and spend even five minutes walking around deciding if you like the feel of a college your intuitive reaction to what will be your daily surroundings shouldn't be underestimated when weighing against all the more concrete factors in your decision.
    Brave of you Sharvani to apply without having the chance to visit. I mean brave as in brave and not as in reckless! You took a leap into the unknown by moving across the world to study at a great university. I hope it's all you dreamed of and more!

      Small possibility this won't go down well with the Cambridge crowd since Oxbridge rivarly is a thing... but if this is the way you're thinking, that you'd like to do English at Cambridge, don't discount Oxford either. The two have very strong similarities. One is like a parallel universe of the other where the same concepts exist but with subtle differences. Unless this rule has changed recently, UCAS will only let you apply to one of the two, so my advice would be to look into the details of the English course at each, both the compulsory and optional parts, and decide between the two unis based on that before then deciding about a college. Always remember there are more Oxbridge-quality students than they have places for and you can have a great experience at another uni if that's how it turns out for you. But if you're a high-achieving student with a real interest in your subject that goes beyond just studying it to pass exams, you should 100% aim high and consider a Cambridge or Oxford application, as you'd be exactly who they're looking for.

      @@cephalopod7300 heyyy!! Thank you so much for the advice. I was actually thinking of applying to Oxford. And like you said I have done extensive research on the courses of both the unis. And after that I found that I prefer Cambridge. And yes I know about the UCAS thing and that was the reason I actually had to do extensive research 😅. I totally agree with you and after my research only, I have come to the conclusion that I want to apply to Cambridge. I just like the course structure and the options in third year that you can get. And the city too in general. But honestly thank you for the wonderful advice :)

    Do lectures happen in the departments premise ? Or you have separate teaching blocks in a centralised way.

    • @SailingwithSharvani
      @SailingwithSharvani  Před 2 lety

      Departments are sort of like separate teaching blocks - so in regular years, lectures would be happening in departments! Of course, I’ve only experienced online lectures due to covid 😓

    In one of your previous vlogs, u had said that we can apply to EITHER Cambridge OR Oxford, and that we can apply to 5 colleges in 1 UCAS application. Does that mean that if we apply to a college in Cambridge, then for the rest 4, we can only apply to any college which is not Cambridge or Oxford?

    • @SailingwithSharvani
      @SailingwithSharvani  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes precisely! :) Remember, choosing a college is one COMPONENT within a Cambridge application, and this is the same for Oxford as well since even Oxford has a collegiate system.

    Sharvaani, Do we wanna go to UK for interview? What about your experience?

    • @SailingwithSharvani
      @SailingwithSharvani  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! You do not have to go to the UK for an interview. In your application form, there is an option for you to indicate your location preference for an interview. I took mine in Singapore. However, last year, ALL interviews happened online due to covid, so I’m not sure how the interviews are going to happen this year and the next.
