it was Marseille, CSKA, Club Brugge and Rangers actually. the other group was AC Milan, Porto, PSV Eindhoven and IFK Goteborg. your point is still valid though lol crazy how the inaugural champions league didn't have representatives from Spain, England or Germany. Rangers actually beat Leeds United in the qualification rounds

It was a deliberate concession of a penalty kick. There was zero attempt to play the ball. He played the man and cut across him with both feet. The match was fixed with bribes to several CSKA Moscow players (the same players who had defeated holders Barcelona in the Camp Nou eliminating them in the qualifying round just months earlier). A disgrace. Marseille should have been stripped of their title and AC Milan and Rangers should have replayed the final.

The Russian players were rushed too to France the day before, so they were knackered, and their food was poisoned and the game was fixed. Notice how none of the CSKA players even put in a tackle.

@oli76130 Yep, it was in the press at the time, the players were checked out. Sure Marseille were at all sorts of shit back then, brought up for corruption in 1993, Bernard Tapie.
@@michealkelliher8428 Marseille was judged for corruption in their championship, since then everyone tried to say there was also corruption in their european campaign afterwards... Bruges paid in semifinal, even AC Milan & Berlusconi paid for the final... Believe what you want. I don't believe the Russians, before and now !

This was 1993, Russia was weak at everything, they didn't need to complain, unless they had to, but they did here, they had no chance of ever winning that group.

What about the fact their championship was in winter break and they had to play friendlies in Spain, or to play their european legs in Germany ? They surprised Barcelona in August - the champions, to say they weren't that weak, moreover with a russian team in the last 8 of Euro '92 one year before - and then were out of form in March, that's why they lost. If that russian story of poisoned food was true, UEFA would have punished Marseille even more as they did - the sanctions were already huge
