  • The CHGO Bulls crew evaluates the trade that brought Josh Giddey to the Chicago Bulls for Alex Caruso in a player-for-player deal on Thursday. Most were shocked that the Bulls got no draft compensation from the Oklahoma City Thunder in the deal. Did Sam Presti get the better of Arturas Karnisovas in this negotiation? Matt, Big Dave and Will give their grades for the trade. Plus, the guys discuss how each team’s PR handled the news of the trade and how the Bulls are being perceived in NBA circles. And if the Caruso trade signifies a rebuild beginning, what is the next domino to fall? Zach LaVine to the Kings, a DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade, waiving Lonzo Ball?

Okc fan here. From what it sounds like is that this trade was approached at the trade deadline, and OKC wanted to see where they stand in the playoffs with this roster, which is why y’all don’t move AC at the trade deadline. OKC doesn’t sweep New Orleans without Josh in game 4. He also has had huge games in Boston and New York.
I’m not surprised Sam didn’t give a pick. He knows the value, and it’s funny that people are constantly like “you can’t pick them all…” but it’s because Sam has bigger plans. I really think yall should’ve gotten at least two second round picks, but my guess is Sam had other suitors for Josh, and knew that Chicago wanted Giddey BAD, so Sam gave them his best offer, otherwise he’d trade him elsewhere.
Josh is a solid person. The off the court issue clearly messed with him. The people that released it, were blackmailing him about it. When the incident happened he found out the next day she lied about her age, and he dropped her and told the team. If he was an actual predator, then they should’ve protected the victim, and not doxx her. It seems like petty revenge.
Josh is very self aware, and so I suggest yall go watch what at what Josh had to say during his post season interview. He knows what he needs to do, but his year was so tough.
Lastly, one of Josh’s biggest Thunder fans who is an absolute hater of Josh, has a special needs child that needed serious help. Josh stepped up and donated a large amount of money to that guys go fund me.
I know yall feel like yall got a shit sandwich, but he is gonna surprise some people. I’m rooting for him, and I hope this leads to a lot of success for him and yall.

This is an awesome take and thanks for your input. The trade has grown on me I well admit. I agree at least some 2nd Round Picks! That’s the distance between Sam Presti and everybody else he knows his players, their values and what his team needs to win. As much as I think Giddey is good and do believe he can get better although not holding my breath because the Chicago coaching staff have proven to be incompetent at times. I think he’s shown promise and does have a lot of skill The real component will be how Chicago puts this team together!

@@Trick.Ricky.Sternn if y’all can surround him with some knockdown shooters, he’s an 18/8/7 guy. In year 2, he was the ball handler leading the second unit when SGA went to the bench. Last season, Jalen Williams emerged as that guy, and basically put Josh off ball all game long. Josh was always starting the 2nd and 4th quarter as the lead guard, but then that became Jalen’s spot. Josh’s 3 point shooting can be okay…. But he needs confidence. Watch his FIBA play last year, watch him in the Olympics this year when he is the primary… OKC doesn’t win the Play In game against New Orleans in the 22/23 season without Josh. He went for like 30 that game.

im not sure why anyone would say the bulls got Fleeced, the bulls werent winning with Caruso...his value is to a contending team, not to a team thats struggling because what they need they are not getting from the guys they current have...Giddey shoots a better FG%, for a guy that cant shoot? He scores more points than Caruso, gets more rebounds per game, more assists for a guy who plays LESS minutes than Caruso...he shot a better FT % than Caruso...Alex is 30...Giddey is 21...yall gotta be trolling...Fleeced? Yeah the bulls got a very promising YOUNG player thats going to be playing for YEARS at a lvl that is already higher than Caruso, oh and lets not just randomly choose to forget how injury prone Alex really is...he could have missed a ton more games because he was constantly hurt midway through them and taken out or never came back in the game after, the guy was patched up with scotch tape and isnt going to be healthier the older he gets...
Alex Caruso has always been a role player and not much more than that, hes a great defender, its what he does, Giddey has a chance to be a much better player than Alex ever was, at age 21 he hasnt even came close to maxing his potential, i fully understand why the media is so hyped for OKC, yes they are young and in a good position to compete in the playoffs and the bulls are not, so its not in the benefit of the league to hype up players who wont be seen by the masses on prime time TV, but to say Caruso is highly overhyped is an understatement.

I’m more critical of AKME than most but anyone saying this trade is bad for the Bulls is just being childishly emotional and attached to players who haven’t done anything of note here. DeMar next please as that should’ve already been done a while ago, we have a player development coach now and don’t need to be childish and act like the “double team mid-range after school program” is helping our young guys develop.

Totally. This might easily being the best floor general the Bulls have had not named Michael (and yes that includes Lonzo at a close third).
Giddey is a VERY gifted passer. VERY. If not for the fact that they have SGA, OKC doesn't do this.
This is the 6th pick from the 2021 (Franz Wagner) draft. You can make a strong case that he should have gone third, with only Scottie Barnes and Evan Mobley rightly going before him.
This is a HUGE step in the right direction. Young leadership.

There's no possible way that anyone who still believes in Patrick Williams or Dalen Terry should be critical of this trade.
This guy could end up being our best player next year or the year after. He had a nice role and played well before this past season when the Thunder weren't contenders but were STILL BETTER THAN THE BULLS. If we get rid of DeMar then he and Coby sharing the primary ball-handler role will make both of them better. Giddey being able to pass and work with his floaters will make the whole team better if DeMar isn't on the team and allowing the paint to be packed because defenders don't respect him if he doesn't have the ball or has it more than a few steps outside the paint.

Completely disagree with you guys. You had no playmaking on a team thats ranked in the bottom on assists. Billy always did much better with a playmaking point. Hes 6'8 who can give you anywhere from 15-20 ppg. Add his playmaking abilities with coby scoring i think this is a good move even without picks. Im sorry but most of you act like caruso is an all star when realistically hes a defensive guard that is below average on offense. We have Ayo that basically does caruso does with better offense and much younger. Caruso is on an expiring deal that will not resign with us.

To me as long as AKME **finally** realize the Bulls aren’t contenders and thus DeMar is not on this team next year than this team is moving in the right direction and the young guys we have can run an offense in peace without getting the ball late in the shot clock and trying to make plays/passes in a congested paint because DeMars defender is sagging off of him. As long as they stop clinging to DeMar and that human safety blanket is out of here then I’m good.

We got a 21yo starting PG for a defensive specialist in his 30's. Would we feel better if OKC didn't want to give Josh up? All I know is that despite having arguably one of the best defenders in the league we still sucked defensively. As great as Alex is, he is always one loose ball away from a season ending injury.
We needed a new direction and instead of a high pick in a weak draft class we received an established starting caliber lottery pick player coming off a down year with a tonne of upside. Caruso is great but he does little to help the Bulls in 2 or 3 years whereas Giddey might be an important piece moving forward. Maybe we could of received more but Chicago has a history of overvaluing and under delivering. Whichever way you look at it it's no Josh's fault and he definitely brings playmaking we need.

Here’s a theory, what if AK, instead of asking for picks, asked OKC to not present P-Will an offer sheet after he hits RFA. I have a feeling that’s who OKC wanted in the trade and AKME declined. At that point maybe there was a moment when OKC was like, “fine, we’ll just sign him with our remaining cap space.” Perhaps it was at that point that AK was like, here take Caruso, you don’t even have to give us draft capital if you promise not to offer P-will anything. 48:22 this is my greatest point pun intended about Giddy. You want him to run the show that’s fine. But I’m crunch time the ball will find your best player and if he is not with most likely he won’t be your best scoring option that means we’ll run into the same situation OKC has with is not highly effective enough of a shooter. To me the Bulls are t smart enough to get the best out of Giddy they failed to do it with Vuc and Zach and PW, etc….. Giddy should be in the post on the half court set but Chicago will most likely put him in the corner for wide open 3s yet he not a great shooter! We will be a worse team in sue Chicago doesn’t mind that for next year. Giddey and Coby backcourt defensively? Terrible! If that’s your future! I truly dont think they got to run the team the way they wanted too. I think if it was up to them, they would have traded caruso at the deadline for a better deal, but ownership said no to chase the 8th seed to make more money. Ownership dont care about winning, just to continue to milk the success of what jordan brought. Fans still support the team, get great attendance every year. I wouldn't be surprised if ownership pushed for the Vuc trade either, to maximize the earnings of lavine's growth. I feel the same may have happened with paxson too. When the team was in a true rebuild, paxson looked like a great GM. He made a lot of great moves that bulls fans seem to forget about. AK had a real good track record at rebuilding the nuggets before he came here too. Reinsdorf is truly the problem.
