    I'm growing sunflowers the first time this year. My strategy is plant them in all different locations and see what works best, then next year I will focus them there.

    Oh Amanda! You have been reading my mind and I'm so thankful you spoke about not just the garden issues and how to treat, but the issues of budgeting and watching some of the big garden YT people that most of us can't even relate to. That's why I watch you the most because not only are you in my area, but you do so much with a normal neighborhood home and garden and not outrageous budget. Thank you so much for showing how to save money by growing from seed and using Facebook Marketplace for savings on pots and other items. We all want it all, but we have to realize like you have, that many gardens we admire are well established gardens that happen over time. And the most joy we should receive is just being in our garden every day and enjoying the journey that is gardening. Big hugs!

    Since first growing sunflowers I have always had them scattered about the yard and orchard. It's January here in the high mountain desert and I have sunflowers in bloom. Even after some snow. These are voluntary sunflowers "often the best kind". They are easy to grow and beautiful.

    Several years ago I grew some sunflowers that were taller than my husband (6'3'). I did bag two of the blooms but somehow I did not store them properly because they were moldy the next spring. Last year I planted some in pots in March. I planted the little plants in my garden in mid May. The bunnies feasted on them soooo no sunflowers last year. By the way, have bunnies ever eaten your petunias? They ate all the ones I planted in the ground last year and some of the ones in pots they could reach. That was a first for this house and this is our 20th year here in central Indiana.

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  Před 3 lety

      I haven’t had issues with bunnies but I think that’s because of the highly populated area that my house is located with tons of new construction. I’ve seen other gardeners suggest covering the seedlings with netting until they are larger and stronger.

    i'm growing so many varieties this year, great fast hedge, and food for the birds in the winter, growing mamoth and dwarf, yellow, burgundy, they scream "it's summer" for me"...i'm using empty water bottles to direct seed to keep the squirrels from munching, i cut out the bottom, cut up the side, cut off the top, plastic cylinder...so they pull off easily once it's growing

    @jilliancook5625 Před 3 lety +1

    Thank you for the pre-sprouting tip!!!! I direct seeded a 4x4 space and had a pretty high germ rate (Johnny’s Seeds), but the soil in that spot is pretty mellow. I’m about to plant in a heavier clay and I was considering transplants but have never done that myself and often hear not to transplant. Sounds like pre-sprouting might be the happy medium here. Thanks!

  • @accesstotheredcarpet

    Interesting that you water your sunflowers once a week. I water mine whenever soil feels dry the leaves tilt if sun on them is scorching hot. I water deep in their base area. They perk right back up. They’ve made it through thunderstorms but I had to do some draining work to keep them from overwatering. The one I planted on ground is growing from mulch and it’s growing crazy fast! I don’t water those that much because they are in ground. The rain helps. When heat weather becomes excessive, I water them almost regularly so they don’t burn out.

  • @robertfrost6421
    @robertfrost6421 Před 7 měsíci

    Good tips, thanks for the video. If I were to add one more I would say be careful of the squirrels. They will eat the seeds when you try to direct sow and even if they are just small sprouts they aren't necessarily safe. I planted a good number, planted the best looking seedlings first, slowly I would lose one after another and had to replace them with the less than ideal seedlings that I had. The squirrels are relentless where I live, they treat all my containers like a jungle gym, they simply do not care
