    Man, what impressive acceleration out of the stations! Here in Chicago IL USA, it would take the diesel Metra commuter trains two minutes to get up to the speed that the RER can do in less than 20 seconds.
    And that's a fact!

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Před rokem

      @@ekonomija8718What rural areas ?
      The extension of M14 goes down South to Orly airport, a pretty built up area, absolutely not rural at all.
      Line M14, with the full extension, will go from Saint Denis Pleyel in the North to Orly airport in the South, crossing Paris center and running exclusively underground across a continuous urban environment.
      You may see some new MP14 trains running outside, on the short elevated stretch (including a station) near the new Eastern terminus of line's M11 extension.
      But this outside elevated portion of line M11 is not rural at all, it's very urbanized and currently densifying a lot with new large mid rise buildings popping up all around.
      It's the only part of any line running MP14 trains that is outside, and none of them are in rural areas.
      (Except the maintenance centers at line M14's ends that can have short and low speed tracks on the surface).

    In France the name of trains is dictated by a nomenclature :
    - Z means electric self-propelled train
    - MI means interconnexion train (dual electric current for exemple 1.5kv and 25.5 Kv)
    - BB means electric locomotive having two-wheel axle (electric or diesel)
    - U means Tram-train
    - CC means electric locomotive having three-wheel axle (electric or diesel)
    -X means self propelled diesel
    -B means self-propelled dual mode (train electric and diesel)
    complex isn't it?^^

    The z22500 of the Line E is the same model as the model of the Line A(z1500) the only difference is that A is used by two company of railway : RATP for Paris and SNCF for the railway out of Paris, and the E is fully used by SNCF so every train is obligated to reach 140km/h max so SNCF take some of the 1500 and upgrade them to be in rule for the commercial service

    Does the MI09 or similar bilevel stock with 3 doors experience any boarding delays during peak hours? I hear many systems consider bilevel trainsets but worry about loading and dwell times.
    The MI09 is unique in that they have 3 sets of doors on each side while being a double decker train.

    • @ekonomija8718
      @ekonomija8718 Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah I was pretty surprised to learn we have 3 door stock as well.
      As someone who uses bilevel stock every day, I'd say that load times aren't that much longer, since people usually just get up stairs as soon as they get in.
      In unexpected super-rush times (if a previous RER got cancelled), things can get difficult

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Před rokem +1

      It works pretty well.
      They have incredibly high frequencies in the central part, with trains entering the station while the previous one hasn't fully cleared the platform yet.
      It's mesmerizing to watch!
      Usually for a 2 minute frequency, they have 60 seconds spacing, a 50 second window for dwell time and 10 seconds of contingency.
      When the peak hours overload is at full swing, trains are literally "head-to-butt".
      There are pictures on a RER Wikipedia page (I think it's the one for RER A or maybe for the autopilot system) where you can see trains behind each other in stations, only separated by a few dozen meters.

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Před rokem

      Part 2 :
      I forgot to mention the soon arriving "RER NG" that will be running on RER lines D & E and the MI 20 / MI NG that will run on line B, the second busiest of the network, a little later.
      Now also known as Z 58000 and Z 58500 (Alstom Bombardier X'Trapolis Cityduplex), the RER NG trains will have a mix of single level and bi-level carriages : each "short" (112 or 130 meters) train is composed of 2 single level carriages, one at each end, and 4 or 5 bi-level carriages in the middle. They are roughly 3 meters wide and two cars at each extremity are motorized, four per train.
      "Long" (225 or 260 meters) trains are simply double consists.
      These new RER NG trains have shorter carriages (20m end cars, 18m bi-level cars) featuring extra wide doors (almost 2 meters), 2 per side per carriage.
      The trains are fully walkthrough with much larger mid-level platforms at door height which, with the wider doors, really help reducing dwell time, even with slightly less doors (a total of 12 doors per side instead of 15 for a 112m single train like MI09 / MI2N / Z 22500) for RER line E.
      The 7 carriage / 130m version Z 58500 (2 single level, 5 bi-level) will have 40% more doors than the trains they replace (Z 20500) on RER line D : 14 doors per side instead of 10.
      Tests have shown that a larger platform at door height inside the train really improves boarding and deboarding flow, hence the dwelling time.
      If stairs are too crowded, passengers stack up on the larger platform in the open gangway between cars instead of blocking the doors.
      Line E is being massively extended to the far flung suburbs of the West, with a deep tunnel extension from the current terminus under Saint Lazare to Nanterre la Folie station, after La Défense. It is due to open later in 2023.
      All this central part from Nanterre to Rosa Parks on the other side of Paris center is being equipped (testing phase) with a new system called NExTEO to allow super high frequencies and higher speeds.
      They want to run trains every 85 or 90 seconds during rush hour.
      That's each way of course : 40 - 42 trains per hour, giving a humongous capacity of approximately 125 000 passengers per hour, per way, at nominal occupancy.
      The nominal capacity for a single Z 58000 (line E) is 1563 passengers, 501 seats or 3126 passengers, 1002 seats for double (most) trains.
      And for the Z 58500 (line D) : 1860 passengers, 604 seats for single trains or 3720 passengers, 1208 seats for double consists.
      Keep in mind that these numbers are always a tad conservative and don't really account for the real maximum capacity when trains are fully packed like sardine cans.
      They have high acceleration capabilities and run at 140km/h maximum. (One requirement was to clear an entire 225m long platform in under 23 seconds).
      At least 12 RER NG trains (6 Z 58000 and 6 Z 58500) are already doing test runs on lines E and D at the moment, including a minimum of 2 dedicated to the testing of NExTEO.
      131 RER NG trains have been ordered so far (71 in the first firm order batch + 60 in the second firm order batch) out of the 255 planned in the framework order. A third firm order batch is expected this year and they may order more than the 255 originally planned.
      Tests on line E are expected to end in October when the first stage of the Western extension opens (the second and last phase opening is expected in 2024).
      Line D's Z 58500 trains are expected to enter service mid 2024.
      RER B :
      A somewhat equivalent train, the MI 20 / MI NG has been ordered for RER line B and its peculiarities. The initial order is for 146 MI 20 trains, out of a framework tender for 180.
      The MI 20's will replace the 158 aging MI 79 (116) & MI 84 (42) currently in service, effectively converting the last single level RER line, the very busy RER B, to high capacity bi-level rolling stock.
      MI 20 trains will have a mix of single and bi-level carriages a bit like the RER NG / Z 58000 / Z 58500 but following a different model.
      Initial renderings show single level cars at both ends, then an alternation of bi and single level cars (3 bi-level cars with 2 slightly shorter single level cars in between) forming a semi articulated train.
      The 2 single level end cars each have 2 conventional bogies while the 5 middle carriages are supported by 6 bogies in total (2 conventional and 4 Jacobs bogies)
      Each 104 meter long, fully walkthrough, single MI 20 train will have 7 much shorter carriages with 2 extra-wide doors per side and large platforms at door level in the wide open gangways between cars.
      They'll have large windows, 345 seats and will carry 1070 passengers at 4p/m², 1605 passengers at 6p/m².
      Most trains will be double ones, with 690 seats, 2140 pax or 3210 pax at 4 or 6 passengers per square meter.
      An increase of roughly 20% in seating and 35% in overall capacity compared to the 4 carriages and 4 doors per side, 280 seats, ~800 / 1200 pax overall capacity of the MI 79 / MI 84 they'll replace.
      They are starting production and are expected to start deliveries in 2025 up to 2029 or 2030.
      The main reasons for the shorter carriages are accessibility, a slightly wider loading gauge and the need to reduce platform gaps in the many curved stations of line B.
      The increased capacity on both RER B & D provided by the new trains will be a great relief given that NExTEO has been postponed on those lines. They suffer from a massive bottleneck, or more honestly a real choking point : the shared tunnel between Chatelet les Halles and Gare du Nord, the only location in central Paris where there's interlining between two RER lines.
      Any small hiccup on one line severely affects the other in the shared tunnel ; that's why the large mid-level platforms on the open gangways between carriages were designed : reduce the probability of hiccups and greatly improve fluidity at the bottleneck.
      The installation of platform screen doors on the central section is being studied to further shorten dwell time and reduce the probability of hiccups.
      Both RER NG / Z 58000 and MI 20 / MI NG have bright, colorful and roomy cabins, mood lighting, CCTV, load adjusted temperature / conditioning, dynamic passenger information and loads of USB plugs to recharge devices.
      MI 20's also have near full height windows on its doors which will certainly be a favorite among passengers for the thrill they'll give.
