How to say “I have” in Ukrainian language? "У мене є" or "Я маю"?

personally, I prefer using the usual structure of "мати + accusative", because it is more natural. "У мене", in my opinion, rather means "in my possession". so, for example, "У мене є автомобіль" is "a car is in my possession"; a bit different from "я маю автомобіль".
The first type is the same like in the German construction " haben (to have) + accusative". I'm not sure if the equivalent of "мати" in Russian is the verb "нметь". I guess it is.
The second type is the same like in Russian " у меня есть".
Иметь and мати ("мати 1" , with meaning "to have") are of close but not common root. So, they are not cognates but "oblique cognates", have "indirect" origin from common Proto-Slavic ancestor the common root anand obviously are in 38 % of the Russia-Ukrainian "lexical distance (not similarity as it is done by many linguists).
Concerning purely grammar aspects, it seems that Russian "я имею" are less often and not with any nouns, etc. now is less commonly used in ordinary speech (in formal language it may be theoretically always used but in practice it is less used).
The Ukrainian "мати 2" (to be obliged) also have different meaning to Russian word and is "false friend" to "мати 1"

The second way of expressing...to have...is much more complex. I will start with using the first way for simplicity...in a sea of Ukrainian language complexity!
It depends... I am a native speaker of Polish, so I find the first way to be simpler, more natural and precise. For example, in Polish "her boyfriend has a job" is "jej chłopak ma pracę/robotę" (the letter "ę" denotes a nasal "e"). But I also speak some Russian, so I understand the second form as well. BTW, my goal is not to speak Ukrainian fluently, but to understand it more. Now I understand about 70% of the Ukrainian TV news etc., without ever learning Ukrainian.
Don't worry. You can use only the first variant. It is natural.

luckyluckydog123 If you say «в мене є», it is ok and I will understand you. But phonetically it is not correct to use a preposition «в» in front of the word that starts with the consonant. So, due to the phonetical tradition of Ukrainian language you have to say «У мене є».
