The only difference is the state media used to publish this when it was no threat, while now as we suffer the fate predicted by this video the ideas are ignored.

Friedman was an excellent economist, optimistist, rhetorical genius, and his smile is so disarming.
The Left always make arguments that everyone else knew about four generations before. Today's left love talking abut special interest groups, corporate welfare, too big to fail bail outs, socialism for the rich Etc ... like it's all a big revelation and super intelligent news that only they are privy to. Friedman was talking about this all along and pointed out that it's all cyclical anyway. The Labour Party in the UK, 1945, were introducing ideas that Bismark supported in 1869 and Bismark was accused of being a reactionary by his own Kaiser back then. The British Conservative Party supported these ideas back in the 19th century also. Marx referred to these ideas as Reactionary ideas, like Christian Socialism, Feudal Socialism and Petite-Bourgeois Socialism in 'The Communist Manifesto' 1848. The Left now claim it all as their ideas now. 19th century reactionary programmes are radical progressive left-wing ideas in 21st century, Pffff.

A brilliant analyst not of economy but of human nature itself and the way to control for the inevitable biases that accompany it through economics.
And nowadays we have on television: reality shows, discussions about peoples' sex changes, the trivial rantings of vain celebrities. Even when it comes to more serious tv, you get science shows that talk down to their audience, history programs with more "dramatic reconstruction" than discussion of facts, etc., etc.
I'm actually old enough to remember shows like this on UK tv too. I can remember when Channel 4 in the UK started, they used to have a late night discussion show where a bunch of intelligent people - Left, Right, scientists, businesspeople, artists, religionists - would get together with a drink and a smoke to discuss serious issues into the night, without any format or structure - just an open intellectual agora. I can't even imagine the possibility of such a thing now.
+gurugeorge Well the free market should come in if people wanted to see such a program, theoretically, to fill the gap in the market. But in the UK you do have programs like Question Time or Newsnight... This particular program is similar to what Charlie Rose does in the US... (Incidentally all those are government funded programs, BBC and PBS)

Interestingly, in the early days, Channel 4, while ultimately responsible to a public organization, was self-funding at the time when it had programs like the one I mentioned, and lots of minority and quite left-wing political programming. It was cheaply-made stuff, but varied, and some was very interesting - and quite careless of censorship. It became more "commercial" (in the sense of having more cookie-cutter, mainstream programming) when it came under the direct control of a more well-endowed, purpose-built public service broadcasting corporation. The history is complicated, but as with many things, it's basically the gummint's fault :)

The quantitative theory of money's assumptions was changed in the 1980s by the Monetarists, a school of thought which was represented by Friedman.

When I noticed Milton said that more liberalist ideals where in campus and intellectual circles, it got me thinking that it was the opposite of what the overall public opinion was, or at least the vocal public opinion. It is noticable today when we see socialist ideals in campus and more conservatist ideals in the public sphere leading to the uprise of right-wing parties such as the Tea Party, UKIP and the French National Front.
There's an interview of Ayn Rand on CZcams from the late 60's or early 70's, she said at the time that the Universities were taken over by the Left.
Does anyone know what the rates are now of federal spending vs. income that Friedman references at 18:00-19:00? "Until 1928 federal, state, and local spending never exceeded 10% of our income with the exception of the Civil War & WWI." At the time of this recording, he said it was 40%. Where is it now?
On a gov website, I read 23%. But I checked historical data, and it lists it at 30 something in the 70s, and almost 40 in 2020. The difference, I think, is state spending.

While not completely true, for the sake of argument if we say it’s true China is currently subsiding the cost of many products for other countries such as Electric cars, solar panels etc. Western firms may have closed partly because of unfair competition but China is indebted today as a result

This is not a very early interview, it was made after he got his Nobel prize. Just because it is in black and white doesn't mean that it is centuries old. This was aired around the time he gave his famous FTC lectures.
