Awesome video! I never made it to the Disk Union in Shibuya, thanks for showing us around. Can't wait till next years' visit. Disk Union in Shinjuku is insane! Hope it's still there with it's 6 floors of goodness. Vinyl is mostly on the ground floors. I was there opening day and it was pure pandemonium. Again, thanks for sharing!
Good to hear that you know about Disk Union stores I'm pretty sure the one in Shinjuku is still in the same building ( 6 floors ). We were gonna stay nearby, but Disk Union in Shibuya was terrific ! Bangkok shops next week for my channel, and my favorite place to buy records ! Thanks 🎵
It is very clean , respectful people, just an overall excellent experience. Only my 2nd time in Japan, and we can't wait to go back next year ! Thank you for checking this one out..😊
Hi JT, enjoyable and well filmed set of videos in Japan. Back in 2007 Julian Cope published a book called 'Japrocksampler' that was my introduction to postwar Japanese pop/rock/underground music - much of which I was completely unaware. In the early '70s a bunch of Japanese bands picked up on the heavier sounds of Sabbath/Cream/Purple etc and came up with their own version. Some of this stuff is amazing and well worth seeking out. You can go online and check out Cope's main recommendations. Hard to find CDs/originals outside of Japan, so have no doubt Japanese record stores would have a very tasty selection.
I completely forgot about the records when i saw that Sushi 🍣 plate!!! It looks so fresh and of amazing quality! Nice York Dolls! Great Del Fuegos! I’ve got them both. Beautiful Flamin’ Grovies comp! That RG kicks butt I bet! Japanese Jeff! Nice 👍🏽 Great buys, JT. Disk Union is AMAZING! What a clean well curated store! Thanks for taking the time to share your trip with us. ✌🏽
Rory's "Live In Europe" is even better ! Steve, the food is so off the hook great in Japan. My favorite record is that Flamin' Groovies ! Shakin' I can't wait to go back again, this time. It will be on our way home from Thailand, no jet-lag this way, only 5 hrs. from Bangkok to Tokyo. ✌
Glasgow, right !! I never had any of your Cd's.. But I do.remember hearing about your band . Thanks so much for watching, and cool that they had your record in the bins. Cheers from Nevada 🤘
I always like it when you take us on your travels. That looks like such a cool record store. Dreamtime has gotten some bad reviews by some critics but I love it, especially the tune "Always The Sun." I need to get more Stranglers in the collection. Graham Parker is one of my favorites and that is a great album. Look forward to Bangkok.
Good to hear that you like Dreamland. I only listened to the first 3 songs with " Always The Sun".. Good album, and I could use some more Stranglers as well ! Back in 91, 3 songs off of Mona Lisa's Sister broke up our good cover band. Michael, our singer, said that he wrote Start A Fire and OK Hierominus, we believed him not knowing this material. At a gig after rehearsing these new songs.. My friend JB walked in and said.. Gee JT, I didn't know you guys played Graham Parker songs !! I thought it was funny and typically miscevious of Michael.. Not so funny to our piano and bass player ! Haha.. Bummer for me, because we played great cover songs, and it was a very fun band to play in !
About the best in Tokyo.. I think ? HMV I hear is good, and the pricing is pretty much all the same from store to store in Tokyo.. That's where the digging comes into play to find a decent value and records that we really want. Thanks, Brian
So much fun, and the fam absolutely loves it too ! My wife was a flight attendant with Japan Airlines, so she showed us all around. Thank you, Monie.. Hope you can make it there someday !
Sure, Harry ! I had fun filming, and especially record shopping. I also had plenty of family time. Sean got to spend his 10th B day at Tokyo Disneyland.. Great trip overall.
Just hit up as many Disk Union stores as I could this last week before I leave Japan today. Found a lot of great stuff for a good prices. Was surprised how many US/UK original presses they had in their shops. Some still sealed from 20-40 years ago.
So awesome, I'm glad you got to spend a lot of time digging ! That's what I tell everybody, take your time and you will find killer records at decent prices. They see the pricy records and think that they are all like that. Bangkok is where I always do well. Next week's video is shot at Fortune Town Mall on King Rama IX Road in Bangkok. Nine record shops in one very nice mall ! Have a safe and fun trip home.. We love flying !
Hi JT!!! you really had a great time in Tokyo, what an awesome city and the people so nice too...... the record stores are also awesome and worth spending hours and lots of cash in there. Btw by our standards a 4.8 - 5 earthquake is nothing, lol. cheers and be well
I know, that was a small tremor ! California is so close to us, and Chile.. You guys have bigger ones than LA and SF on average, I think ?. We get them here too.. So far, just tremors. I know you would be in the metal section on the 5th floor of Tower in Japan. Btw.. Rivers Of Nihil have a new album coming out in a few months, and more vids are up.. Metal Blade records. Thanks, again
Record stores will always be on my itinerary when i travel. Now that I'm on Instagram I follow accounts that show book stores and libraries around the world, so im adding those to my itenerary too!
I swear, I would lose my mind in a Japanese record store, so much cool stuff, I would definitely grab that Pandoras LP, great all girl garage rock. The Primitives is another cool band with female vocals, kind of a jangle pop sound, check out their song Crash. Nice pickups, that Dolls EP looks cool. Yes, the Flamin' Groovies! great comp by them, look for their album Teenage Head, it's my favorite by them. Thanks for sharing your trip to Japan, loved seeing the record stores. Take care Jt.
I love Teenage Head, but I think this comp " Shakin" is my all-time favorite Groovies ! Since I saw Primitives and The Pandoras, I have been streaming both bands, and I think that I will pick up the pink Pandoras cover LP ! Michael, I just get what I can and try to budget, for instance.. I came home and bought a collection of 300 UK press LPs. We are going back in 11 months and counting. I do wish I would have picked up Savage Eye The Pretty Things with that Obi.. It's a gorgeous record !
Yeah.. Pandoras are great ! That record on the repress sells for 25.00 on Bomp ! I worked with Greg Shaw's son, Mike here in Reno ! I remember that about Kim..
04:00 "I just walked in; I'm going to keep looking." lol That's why I can' spend long amounts of time in a record store - I usually find my limit for that day within about 5 minutes....then I have to tell myself "keep looking, you've hardly scratched the surface...." but then I end up finding a lot of records I have to leave behind. lol Sounds like they had the volume up nice and loud in that store. I had that "Dreamtime" album by The Stranglers but I could never get into it. I used to think it was horrible to go to MacDonald's when visiting another country, but now I've come around to the feeling that, if you're away from the U.S. for a long time, sometimes it's nice to get back to something that's more familiar. Thanks for showing the records!
With a 10 year old kid, we go to all of these places, and Mc Donald's is fun in Japan, and even better in Thailand ! I shopped for bargains because I get great records for as low as 25 cents each here in Reno. I just bought a collection so good that I need to sit on it before I show it on my channel. The guy did me a solid to say the least. Thank you, Randy.. Next week's Bangkok vid will be fun to put together, and see you on yours. BTW.. I liked that band playing in the background at Disk Union. It should be in the details of this video.. They were playing at the store the very next day !
Haha.. I got you to watch ! 😉Your shorts are amazing btw. I stayed away from the pricy stuff, and did well with what I bought at Tower and here at Disk Union. Next week, Bangkok, my favorite place to records out of country. Thanks, Chris.. See you on yours.
We have been going to Thailand for years, and only recently have we stopped and stayed in Japan. We love it, and will.return 1 more time next March ! Thanks, Recs
On my short visit to Japan I went on the bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka, maximum speed around 180mph takes from 2hrs20mins distance 320 miles, it’s almost like being on a jet ✈️ amazing. Osaka and nearby Kyoto both have a number of vinyl stores too! Kyoto is a must visit, an enchanting city full of interesting sights and culture. I saw many buskers in the streets!
I'd love to go to Kyoto.. I will bring that up to Jum. Tell your girlfriend hello for me. We have already planned to return to Chonburi in 11 months. The bullet train sounds amazing, and one can spend 2 hours on the Tokyo metro, alone ! Sounds good ! See you, Roy, and thanks !
Dan.. How are you ? Thanks for looking in on this one. I will see what you are up to lately. Another epic trip overseas.. My wife and son keep me traveling !
Hey JT! Great stuff as always. Would love to make the trip, but my flight time limit is 8-9 hrs. I'm fine with going to Europe, but I can't do the Far East, I won't even go to Hawaii for that reason. Pretty Things. Was $26 for sealed or used?
Savage Eye was used in VG ++ I should have pick that one up. I have it on Cd, but that jacket is beautiful with the Obi. I take a sedative after the first meal when the lights go down. I'm out until 2 hrs. to travel. ( 14 hrs from SFO to Tokyo ). I used to do it the hard way.. very little sleep, watching 3 movies, and completely trashed and in need of sleep when I get to Bangkok ! Thanks, Steve.
I will be going to the shinjuko store in August I’ll definitely get to the Beatles floor. I also plan on hitting A Perfect Circle the all Beatles store in shinjuko. 30 record stores are in this area of Tokyo. Many to choose from. It will be expensive.
Awesome ! I wasn't aware of Perfect Circle. So.. We came home, and I absorbed a Beatles collection. All UK press. The guy really did me a solid on these, also 7 " as well. Almost all upgrades to my Beatles collection. I love shopping in Japan and Bangkok, but I do very well with record buying here locally. My channel is based on score after score at very low prices. I sure appreciate you looking in on this one 🎵 Thank you !
I wish I was going to Tower records!!! to bad other people don't look the other way like me!!! nice Dreamtime , Del Fuegos , Gentlemen take poloraids , Jeff Beck - Wired , Grahm Parker , Rory Gallagher , lots of nice albums? great view of the Toyoko Tower , Mcdonalds, Senso Ji Buddhist!!! nice Toyoko CN Tower, sweet Sumida River the boat looks fun? questions in that Mcdonalds do they sell Beer? can you buy gift cards from stores for outside use like Mcdonalds in other stores like in the US you can buy Barnes and nobles Norstroms at Home Depot can you buy Mcdonalds gift cards out side of Mcdonalds?
And I'm not sure about gift cards at McDonalds. either.. I really don't know. We went in there to get out of the rain, actually. Thanks for watching our journey on that interesting day !
I know this record store very well! There's really good one in Matsudo which near where my sister in-law lives. It's always a case of what not to get, because my suitcase is only so big!! Only just over a month before I'm back...well maybe longer because I'll be in Canada first. Flamin Groovies on Buddha, nice! Instead of Rotten Ronnie's you should try Mos Burger next time you're in Japan. Boredoms. OOIIOO, Afrirampo, Envy, High Rise, DJ Krush, Flower Travellin' Band, Minami Deutsch, Kikagaku Moyo, Guitarwolf & Les Rallizes Dénudés are some great Japanese bands of all styles and eras to check out Jt. Cheers...Ben
We ran into Mickey D's because it was raining hard in Minato City, I will remember the other burger joint.. Mos Burger. Do you have The Pandora's " Its About Time" ?
I will stream those bands, Ben.. On my last video, I asked for suggestions of various Japanese bands. I've had really good recommendations so far. I bought 20 records in Bangkok, which will be next week's video ( We bought an extra suitcase ) 🎵
@@jtsrecordroom3963 I just thought if you like Burgers, you might like Mos. They have a killer veg range for me and plenty for the carnivores too. It takes a little longer because they cook it for you fresh but for a takeaway joint it's really good. I don't have the Pandoras, but it looks sweet!
@@jtsrecordroom3963 Woah 20!! That is a decent haul. I don't know how much I'll be able to get this time around, because we've had a few unexpected house repairs to do & my turntable is on the blink 😢 both of which will be costly fixes.
Hi JT. I was busy last week and missed this video. Some nice records in Disk Union. With my power pop hat on, The Pandoras, Shoes and Dwight Twilley caught my eye ... Good to see some Flamin' Groovies. I have a Groovies bootleg where someone in the audience keeps shouting for 'Doctor Boogie'. Cyril Jordan tries to explain that they don't play that anymore ... Julian Cope (Teardrop Explodes) wrote a book called 'Japrocksampler: How The Post-War Japanese Blew Their Minds On Rock 'n' Roll'.
I always enjoy your feedback, and my Groovies is a total banger ! Greg Shaw writes a nice endorsement on the back cover. I worked with Greg's son for 6 years. He gave me a bunch of Bomp ! Cd's from his father's home after Greg died.
I'm enjoying The Pandoras lately, and that's the record to get, I figure.. Dwight Twilley is fantastic. I have " Twilley Don't Mind" 🎵 Thanks, Carl.. Next stop, Bangkok !
@@jtsrecordroom3963 That's interesting that you worked with Greg Shaw's son. When I started my fanzine, I sent the first copy to Greg Shaw - partly because he'd inspired me to write because of the Who Put The Bomp zine, and also because I'd interviewed Beachwood Sparks. They were massive Gene Clark fans ... Greg Shaw sent me back a lovely letter with support and constructive criticism.
Beechwood Sparks is excellent ! I am a big fan of the young guys they helped along.. Mapache. Carl, I love this duo ! They were in a very good Grateful Dead cover band Grateful Shred out of Silver Lake LA where Beechwood Sparks is from, more or less. Mike found out that Greg and his wife were his birth parents right after Greg passed away. They gave Mike up for adoption but received him wonderfully when Mike traced who his parents were.
@@jtsrecordroom3963 That's strange; there are a couple of comments from you in my notifications, but they aren't on here. Anyway, a podcast with Lynn sounds interesting.
It really is And it broke up my 1st cover band ! Haha 😂 We had a very good singer and arranger of songs, he had a miscevious way about him. He said he wrote " Start A Fire" and "O'K Hierominus."" and one other. We all didn't know this material.. So we performed the songs at a club , and my friend JB said.. "Hey JT, I didn't know you guys covered Graham Parker." The bass player and Lynn, the piano player, got in a big fight with Michael, and that was it ! Later, I bought the Cd, and we rehearsed and performed those 3 songs to the T !!! LoL ! Michael was just having some fun with us. I miss that band !
@@jtsrecordroom3963 What a great story, lol. I cover Get Started, Black Cadillac, and Weeping Statues, and Blue Highways as part of my set when I play out. You guys must've been like we got a songwriter here! And then to find out, oh man, the s hit the fan as they say, lol.
I told Danny and Lynn.. "Hey, what's the big deal" Michael would get bored and stir the pot. I wanted to keep going, our set list was terrific ! Get started was a fun one to play, for sure !
Jt, the footage was amazing. I think I need to visit Japan. The Prince Sex Machine boot looked cool. The Savage Eye jacket was intense. You can tell those jackets are of the highest quality. Beck - Ola is a great album. Nice Flamin Groovies title. Japan is so clean; why am I surprised? Disc Union - Do they mainly sell rock? Take care!!
Disk Union also has entire floors devoted to jazz. Next year, we will go to Shinjuku, Tokyo and there are 6 floors of different genres at that particular Disk Union. I should have picked up The Pretty Things Savage Eye.. Oh well, I do have a lot of records, and that title I have on Cd , anyway..
JT, I got a question way off left field. Are you familiar with Nature’s Bakery in Reno? I get these Raspberry fig bars that are really good. Do they have a store open to the public or is it just manufacturing there? Just curious. Oh yea great record stores in Japan. Peace ☮️ Namaste 🙏 the Zonkman
I'm not sure, I was doing the math as I was buying records.. Close to 7 Dollars USD to 1000 Yen. Does that sound right ? Good to hear from you, Ed.. Mahalo 🤙
Not to be a downer but you want to blur customers’ faces inside of retail stores in Japan. Privacy is paramount in Japan. The street is OK but customers have a presumption of privacy when they are shopping. I know you didn’t know. The CZcams editor tool has a face blur function for uploaded videos. Masked people are fine but those without complain to store staff. Great work!

I bought 20 records in Bangkok, which will be next week's video
( We bought an extra suitcase ) 🎵
@@jtsrecordroom3963 I just thought if you like Burgers, you might like Mos. They have a killer veg range for me and plenty for the carnivores too. It takes a little longer because they cook it for you fresh but for a takeaway joint it's really good. I don't have the Pandoras, but it looks sweet!
@@jtsrecordroom3963 Woah 20!! That is a decent haul. I don't know how much I'll be able to get this time around, because we've had a few unexpected house repairs to do & my turntable is on the blink 😢 both of which will be costly fixes.
All those bands I recommended are a really diverse range of stuff. Hope you dig.
They were in a very good Grateful Dead cover band
Grateful Shred out of Silver Lake LA where Beechwood Sparks is from, more or less.
Anyway, a podcast with Lynn sounds interesting.
cool. nice selection. crazy prices. nice to see pandoras and primitives in there.
Ill listen to some Primitives today, and Pandoras ! Good driving music, I bet. Thanks, Steve.. Talk soon.
@@jtsrecordroom3963 you always pass on the good stuff…. hahahaha. just kidding dude.
Yeah, I do at times. I want The Pandoras.. It's a little cheaper here in the U.S. How long are you gonna be in South Carolina ?
@@jtsrecordroom3963 i got Pandoras/Stop Breathing at Criminal Records in ATL in 2022 for $15. Good record. I’m here till prob August.
I will e mail you. Do you have a mailing add. in SC ?
The Mona Lisa's Sister is a banger.
It really is
And it broke up my 1st cover band !
@@jtsrecordroom3963 What was your band's name? I'd like to hear you guys if you are up on y/t etc.
I am eating one right now ! Haha 😊 It's over by my Dad's house in Donner Springs South Reno. About 25 minutes from where I live.
I just ate the plain fig bar, I like the raspberry and strawberry ones as well ! Thanks, Steve 🎵
@@jtsrecordroom3963 freakin wild, man!
Steve, I think folks can just walk in. I always forget they're made here ! I'll get the raspberry next time !
@@jtsrecordroom3963 I bet they are even better fresh!
Aloha JT,
what was the exchange rate when you were I Japan?
I'm not sure, I was doing the math as I was buying records.. Close to 7 Dollars USD to 1000 Yen. Does that sound right ? Good to hear from you, Ed.. Mahalo 🤙
Not to be a downer but you want to blur customers’ faces inside of retail stores in Japan. Privacy is paramount in Japan. The street is OK but customers have a presumption of privacy when they are shopping. I know you didn’t know. The CZcams editor tool has a face blur function for uploaded videos. Masked people are fine but those without complain to store staff. Great work!
Thanks for the recommendation, Michael. I watch a lot of record vids, and only a few You tubers do that. I appreciate you telling me it's important. 😊
