Yep, used to love this scene until I lived it. In my case, the director suddenly put a meeting on my calendar, without context or explanation, with the invite saying the only attendees were going to be me and her. Next day, the director and HR director walked through the door laughing and joking around, then wrote me up for some vague reason and warned me I was going to lose my job. I didn't sign the doc; instead I took a position elsewhere, cause that day confirmed what I had long suspected about what the director thought of me.

I went to go see him and proceeded to chat him up about his weekend and how he spent it and just lots of blah blah blah bullshit for probably 10 minutes. He was starting to visibly get angry because shock, he didn't like it when HIS time was being wasted despite doing the same thing to me and my coworkers numerous times. When I finally tell him "oh and btw, I've accepted a new position and my last day will be on this date" for once he was finally silent and you could see that his brain was processing that I finally pulled the same stunt that he played on me and others for years.

Then he got promoted to a store manager, and that very week, his attitude completely changed. He became a total dick, that everyone started to hate. It is, in fact, possible to make sure everybody is doing what they are supposed to, and occasionally light a fire under a few butts to get them motivated - AND also be genuine and fair towards everyone. Some people don't have that ability, and just allow their egos to over-inflate, and think that treating everyone like shit is a productive way to get things done.

First they try to disarm you with small talk, “how is the sports team, how was weekend, blah blah” then suddenly go serious mode of how you have been messing up. Formal warnings to try to intimidate you. “I thrive on constructive criticism” I can see right through that. Managers that get their egos all wrapped up and bruised by any sort of defiance so they have to try to crush you down.
Yes, Jim wastes a lot of time we see at work, but he is also second best salesman in the office after Dwight, who also wastes a bunch of time. A real leader would find a way to actually motivate their employee rather than try to prop up their ego by trying to stomp on them. Yes this scene triggered me.

But you're forgetting that Ryan tried to build himself up as a big New York ladies man in front of Michael and Dwight, yet somehow he goes after and strikes out with every woman interested in Jim. He tried to get Katie's number when he thought Jim wasn't dating get anymore. Then he tried to email Karen and ask her out. Finally, he straight up asked Pam out to dinner, only to find out she's dating Jim. Every woman he goes after is more attracted to Jim, while Ryan's stuck with Kelly. That's subconsciously why he has this affinity with Toby in this scene, while using him at the same time. Which is incredibly low. It's really about the women and Jim's comments to Wallace too. Ryan is a skeeze who would resent Jim in both fronts.

I love that 180c shift in tone the second he realized that they actually mean that warning. It's the last thing you'd expect to happen on this show, someone calling out another for not caring about anything but in fact, what it feels like is that this shift comes to show us how unfit Jim is to this environment, he's there for and because of Pam, and staying in a place you're not happy in for someone you love is exactly what I would do and I think it's very brave of Jim, but it also means giving up a part of yourself. Giving up a dream you once had but you just don't try and reach it anymore, and that's a side of Jim we rarely see so I think it was a very important reminder of Jim's loneliness and the sadness always hidden somewhere behind that smile. And it's fascinating to see so thank you for sharing.
