Buddhism is making a come back since last century. Best examples are western Buddhist Meditation movements based on Sri Lankan, Thai & Burmese traditions. Vipassana retreat centers are always full all over the world.

@@jparsit because east is catching up with western life style & values and it take time to realize the futility of over the top, aggressive profit making and extreme materialism. Once east realizes (generalization warning) the emptiness, if at all, then it will also come back to ethical and wise living based on values like, non-harming, non-addictive, compassionate life view. At least that’s the hope…

Though born in Sri Lanka, now only I learned what happened to Buddhism in India. I am so greatful to you for doing much investigation for this story. I wish someone translates your story into Sinhala. (I am an old man who has been in US for last 40 yrs and do not have the strength to translate it.)

The Buddha's teachings is not a religion or dogma, or delusion of reality, in devotion to higher selves of a divinity, or divinities, it is a dharma of free inquiry, the training of the mind to realize the selflessness of person and emptiness of phenomena to end suffering in the cycle of birth, karma and death.
It declined in India due to aggressive, violent and harmful fanatic followers of religions blinded by their faith in true existence, who went about in their covetousness, enmity, delusion and ignorance, destroying humanity and human intellect, which they are still doing today, believing they are superior beings of power due to their religions.
Buddhist sites, stupas and iconography are just forms, impermanent and empty of inherent existence.
However, the noble truths taught by the Tathagata Buddha exists, perpetuated by the right understanding, awareness and consciousness of the realizers of the path of noble beings.

The flourish & perish of a teaching only depends on the masses mentality...The spread of Budha's Teaching in early India shows their wonderful mindset & decline shows the Ignorant & Selfish mindset...
But the best part is that Budha's Teaching works wherever one is, so wonderful is the Universal Teaching...Thanks

Conversation between 2 disciples of an Enlightened Master:
    Oliver asked:
The country with the most universities in the world is India,
India is also the place with the most gods,
But why is India still so poor?
    Zhiyong replied:
    India distanced itself from Buddha,
They can't see the Buddha's light shining all over the place,
As for me, I have always enjoyed the blessings of Buddhism,
So, I will always have perfect wisdom, abundant food and clothing, save myself and others, being wealthy and at ease.

Most people in India are aware of thousands of gods over the years, each one being responsible for wealth, education, success, sexuality, beauty, business etc. etc. This kind of granting favors and punishment for others etc are not within the Buddha Doctrine. The Doctrine is about emancipation from ignorance and stupor, to reach everlasting contentment and inner Happiness. There are no rewards as expected through the belief in Gods etc.
Naturally many people sought material gain through religion, despite the fact that there no celestial beings. For example, a man prays for success at an examination near a statue. Once he passes the examination, the word goes around that the statue helped him. The rumour becomes a religion and people flock there before and after examinations. Now a god for education is born and likewise for success and business etc. This type of worship was not through the Buddha Doctrine and hence the loss of “ material based “ faith seekers. The Doctrine is within this fathom long body.

Buddhism declined in many places where ignorant kings just didn’t care enough for the truth and instead believed what priests told them.
Buddhism depends on real truth seekers, not those who go by rumors.
Hinduism has all cursed gods - all their gods are cursed if you read scriptures.
Islam and Abrahamic religions only have 7 heavens which they couldn’t even describe- Buddha fully described and named 29.
Those with knowledge know Buddha was superior to all of them.

Stop blaming people for decline of buddhism in india. The real reason for decline of buddhism was buddhists themselves. Monks from 10 th century onwards started to corrupt buddha's teachings. They started using rituals, mantras, mudras to get magical powers to get enlightenment. Monks started to live life of luxury and indulgence. They started to take money as donations. They started to use sanskrit that no lay person understood. Because of all thies common people lost respect that they had for buddhism. They monks becomed new corrupt brahmin priests. They also stoped preaching dhamma to attract new followers. And started to more relay on donations from kings and rich merchants. Thies further alienated buddhism from lay people. Things become even harder for buddhism when the trader class started to decline and muslim dynasties and rulers started to rule india who didn't promote buddhism they promoted islam. Buddhism already to that time had lost the respect of lay people and now lost the support of elites leading to the decline buddhism. During theis times hinduism was regaining its lost influence trough bhakti and has once again connected with the masses and islam also gained influence through the support of muslim rulers. So the the main reasons for decline of buddhism was internal degradation and alienation of buddhism from common masses, revival and resurgence of popularity among masses for hinduism, and rise muslim rulers and of islam. Among these the first one being most significant because if buddhism had strong roots among masses and had a place in hearts of people then it would have survived as the major religion like in srilanka.

@@nidheeshpraveen81 false, brahmins/jains started entering Buddhist monastaries and tried their best to corrupt the teachings by sanskritization and even starting to harrass non-vegetarians.
It was the duty of every Buddhist to keep the true Dhamma alive by disrobing corrupt monks/nuns and studying the teachings. Indians continue their laziness by believing those very gods which their texts say they cursed.

This is why i seriously think that Brahminism is equivalent to Abhrahamic specially jews culture who think all other are Goy and are of lower status. The Brahma and Saraswati stories same with stories of Bible's Abraham and Sarah stories, The Judith story is similar to Durga. How come all these in Hindu region where the pure Sanatan Dharma given by Shiv was there polluted by these discriminative ideologies.? its just my querries. i assumed Budhism that's why didn't flourish so much in india while Budha gave really the path of Sanatan with more scientific methods.

Mahayana Buddhism is based on the foundation of Theravada Buddhism, which was introduced into China during the Sui and Tang Dynasties, 1300 years ago, but soon gave way to Mahayana Buddhism.
Why did the Theravada teachings decline in China?
In ancient times, people who learned Buddhism had already been nurtured in the Taois teachings and Confucianism teachings which were enough to replace the Theravada teachings.
Since the Taoism and Confucianism were also similar to those of the Mahayana teachings, it was natural for the Chinese to accept them.
Thus, Theravada teachings were not practiced as Taoism and Confucianism served as the foundation of Mahayana teachings.
Buddhism flourished in India for a thousand years and came to China in 67AD.
Today, Mahayana Buddhism in China is flourishing.
The rise and decline of Buddhism is a natural thing. When there are more believers, Buddhism will flourish.
The decline of Buddhism in a country has nothing to do with others.
If people or country affinity with the Buddha's Teachings decline, naturally Buddhism will slowly fade away.
Japan was a Buddhist country for last few centuries, and in coming century Japan will soon become a Christian country. Politicians are pushing Christianity in Japan.
