    Reamping. It may be a basic part of your recording process already, or it might be something that you’re just starting to dip your toes into. Even if you’re deep into the reamping game, it’s always good to get a debrief and reminder on why processes help elevate your workflow in the studio.
    So get ready, because we’re going to go over the basics, process, and benefits of reamping, and why it could be the very thing that elevates your creative process.
    3 Big Reasons Why We Reamp
    1. 🎸 We reamp so we can focus on our playing first. Think about it-- to get that “perfect” part, we want to focus on things like feel, tone, and quality performance before anything else. Once we have those, we can have a ton of fun hearing ourselves play it back and fiddling with amps and pedals while we sip a cup of our favorite tea (or another drink of choice).
    2. ⌚️ We reamp when we’re in a time crunch. When you’re a producer working with an artist, we should remember that it’s always best practice to split the musician’s signal with a DI to capture a clean recording, especially when they have limited time or budget with you. But when you know you can reamp after, setting them up with a basic amp, effect or modeling plug-in allows them to be in the zone and focus on the quality of parts while recording. That alleviates the stress and pressure of getting the “perfect” sound, which can be accomplished by reamping their direct signal… after they’re done.
    3. 💻 We reamp to leave more control for the producer. As multi-instrumentalists and remote studio musicians, we might not know what sound our producer is looking for. Nailing our performance through a DI allows us the mental and emotional freedom to work with their input, and finding those sounds via different amps and pedals, rather than playing it over 20 different times. Additionally, if you don’t have the proper set-up for that producer, they can reamp your direct performance that you worked hard on.
    Reamping leaves you a ton of options to try out sounds and have fun with the parts you recorded once you get it nailed down. It’s great for flow, and for when you’re working by yourself on parts.
    With reamping, you can go into a song trying to sound like The Meters, and end up leaving sounding like Rage Against the Machine. The key is knowing that what you’re reamping is already your heartfelt performance and that the reamping process is a sonic icing on the cake of a day well spent recording.

      I actually do have another bit-- I find rooms in town that sound cool (and I have access to it or know somebody), bring a monitor speaker and record the tracks in the spaces-- for example, the local masonic temple has 200 foot wooden hallways with low ceilings so I put the monitor at one end, a mic close and a mic all the way down, and recorded. Had a totally unique reverb on separate tracks complete with early reflections that I could mix in. Took about a half hour to set up. Since it was a re-amp, I was done very quickly.

    Reamping is key when you’re an engineer and performer. Makes you able to focus on performance as a musician and not have to wear both hats at the same time. Once the performance is there, then you can totally focus on getting that exact sound you’re going for. Changed my life for when I am recording alone.

    In a recent session we ran into issues in reamping while using the Radial X-amp. The guitarist had a bunch of different fuzz pedals, some of them vintage germanium type, and the reamped signal from the Radial device wasn't behaving at all like the signal from their strat, when routed through some of these temperamental pedals. We ended up getting the sounds on the first go, but with that setup reamping was out of the question. As far as I can tell, this is a impedance/resistance issue, to which these pedals just were super sensitive. Just something to keep in mind.

    • @static-producelikeapro7845
      @static-producelikeapro7845 Před 3 lety

      yes 🙌🏽 that could happen for sure with certain pedals, I encountered this exact thing thing in the past with performing with my wireless rig. I had to get a custom little box built to emulate the pick up.

      But I would think reamping still to be a viable tool in general in many situations.

    Congrats @noiseroom STATiC. Great video! So I am just now in the process of changing my set up to use revamping all the time. I am doing just about the same, but I do run to a real amp when recording the DI, just to get the feel of an amp. Unless I am doing that 80's clean di thing (I guess arguably this could be a 70's trick, but my reference is later hahahahaha). Thanks for sharing!
    One other trick that I also do all the time is run the di to a pedal board only. Then add different pedals to add effects to a track. For example, running some Linn samples (LM-1) out through a boss BF-2 (flanger) gives instant Prince (like When Doves Cry, Beautiful Ones, She's Always in my Hair ect.).

  • @Justin_the_Analog_IC_architect

    I use my IK Multimedia AXE I/O for recording, though sometimes I use a DI box and an old Marshall. I have a few tube and solid state amps that I run through a Two Notes Torpedo for re-amping. Sometimes I use Amplitube or TH-U.

    • @static-producelikeapro7845
      @static-producelikeapro7845 Před 3 lety +2

      Hello hello 👋
      So I always check my latency as I was taught many years ago in ProTools.
      First, I tap to the transient of the newly recorded track, then slice the region, copy the region from that point, then tap to the transient of the DI’d track, arrow back down to the reamp track, and then paste so it is now lined up with the DI’d track.
      This is all if there is a latency issue to begin with. I believe many interfaces will calculate latency for you. But if they don’t this was the old school fix I learned many years ago. Hope it helps 😎

      amazing question!!
      So when I initially tracked I used an amp model from universal audio and since I was going for a clean-ish funky vibe I used the 57 tweed they have as well as the Ampeg b-15.
      So either with a plug in or splitting out to an amp via DI you can get a “close enough” sound for response and feel but you aren’t married to it in the end cause you captured the clean DI signal.
      Hoping this helps to clear things up a bit.

    One thing to pay attention to is the level of the signal coming out of the Reamp box. Even with its volume turned all the way up, the Radial Reamp box attenuates the volume a bit compared to an actual guitar plugged in to the amp. Fortunately, you can compensate for this by slightly increasing the gain of the signal being sent from your DAW. You can also increase the Send signal a bit more than unity in order to push the amp harder.
    Also, using an amp simulator (in your playback effects - not the input effects) while recording should help you perform better. Just be sure to turn off your effects when you playback while reamping (or set the send signal to pre-effects).

    I started recording with a DI for tracking my guitars, because I have dirty power I’m in an older home in New York just across the bridge. The buzz and noise is insane. I think I own every noise suppressor on the market. I found going through the J48 DI box then using an amp sim helps and it’s nowhere near as bad as when it’s going through an amp. However, I need to stand in one spot at all times in the room and that could be torture. Lol… question, being that I now have a clean di signal for the most part I shouldn’t have that much buzz sending it back to the amp or will? This has been an issue for a long time to a point where I felt defeated and lost interest in recording for a while because the buzz was so loud it overpowered the guitar. I finally have it teamed a bit compared to where it used to be. What really sucks is I have a mesa boogie roadster sitting and collecting dust instead of being used. I don’t have the luxury to have re-wiring done in my home. I know it’s not unique in regards to my situation but like anything else you need to make the best of it right?

      hey Billy,
      does your rig buzz when your guitar is not plugged into it?
      I know you mentioned issues with the power so I would assume there’s buzzing when not playing guitar.
      if the buzzing is more controled based on your position, is it something to do with the pick ups in the guitar and how it’s being affected by the power or the lights around you?
      and if so once the guitar is captured and you’ve limited the buzz ,then by sending it back out you may not have the same issues
      but there really is no way to figure it out without trying a detailed and troubleshooting method.
      I
      I actually had an interesting situation when I was filming this video with a hum then I realized my amp was plugged in a different room on different circuits three and box did have a lift in it which actually helped but now I have to run a really long extension cable from the same area that my whole recording set up as in.

      I have a continuous buzz through my studio monitors very slight in the background, If I raise the volume the buzz gets louder. Anytime I plug anything with a pick up forget it. A lot of it is my home. I realize I’m right off the kitchen in a small room I have the compressor from the refrigerator, and track lighting in the kitchen. So I’m doomed LOL… I was thinking about doing what you did running an extension cord around the house. However, I’ve taken guitars and recorded into my iPad Pro, using apogee jam plus, into Cubasis 3, and I’ve tried my MacBook Pro with a scarlet USB interface without plugging anything into an outlet and I still had bad buzz. I have already purchased the Radial Reamp before watching your video. I will say this, you explained it the easiest and I got it to work. Everyone else that I’ve seen so far got too complicated with their gear. Thank you for the reply, and thank you for the video it was extremely helpful. I was very happy last night to get this to work. Sorry for the long long reply just trying to give you all the details. also, your arrangement & guitar playing are awesome. Enjoy your weekend. :-)

    I've had to be very careful when doing this with bass. Once I record I bass, if it has that nosy, midrangy "round" sound, it's been very hard to make it sound like anything else. I never could add much high end, never make it thunder properly, no matter what re-amp tricks I've tried. This has been my experience, and only with bass, not guitar, and maybe others have been able to totally transform their bass performance into something quite different. But I myself, have always had to watch that midrangy tone, or risk being stuck with it.

    Why do you use a DI box for the bass if you only use the XLR output for the recording (but not the output for the amp)? Couldn't you simply plug the bass directly into the recording gear and skip the DI box?

    • @static-producelikeapro7845
      @static-producelikeapro7845 Před 3 lety

      Hello hello
      it all depends on what gear you are using.
      so yes with some interfaces and preamps you could just go in via hi-z inputs, however my capi vp26 does not have a hi-z input as this was my choice pre amp for clean direct recording.
      Also using the direct box gives you the option to split to an amp
      to capture both simultaneously allowing the DI’d track and option to reamp as a back up or safety net of sorts. It is really whats best for your flow at the time.

    • @static-producelikeapro7845
      @static-producelikeapro7845 Před 2 lety +1

      great question !!! The most basic reason for the reamp box is to take the balanced output and convert to unbalanced level like the guitar amp would like to see. The reamp box outputs the proper load to the amp. Also in some case you have a noise and/hum and the reamp box aids in that as well.
      I do believe there is settings in your Apollo to send +4 vs -10, but that is only a part of what come from a reamp box.

    As a guitarist and engineer I personally rarely think re-amping is the way to go. Personally for me, I’m playing the amp as much as I’m playing the guitar for my music so not only committing to a sound is key but being in the room with my amp and cab is key. The nuance of of my picking changes based on how the amp responds. My body position changes as I’m coaxing more of less feedback. Even when playing clean, using the sustain and reverb of the amp to dictate my vibrato is all key. The trap of infinite choices is rarely on you side.
