  • I thought you might be interested in how a real trucker reacts to the computer game American Truck Simulator (ATS). Before today, I've not had this simulation installed on my computer and have only seen it on other CZcams channels.
I got the idea for doing this video when I saw another over-the-road trucker react to their first-time experience with ATS. This video shows my initial reaction and first load delivery in the game.

played for years and got my CDL. right now i'm 16 months experienced and my current beer delivery job doesn't need a lot of backing b/c a trailer is sideload and so i wanted a better paying trucking job so i applied to a food service company where a recruiter or whatever he was wanted me to back into a dock. surprisingly..i couldn't do it so i didn't get hired. it was a very humiliating experience. got back home and played this game for about a week now mainly practicing 90 degree backing to a dock (between trailers as company's portion of road test was) and i'm getting the hang of it. i normally half assed in backing (both in ATS and my job), in between those years i stopped practicing altogether bc i didn't need to and i really regret for neglecting one of essential maneuvers about being a trucker. now i feel like a new driver that doesn't know how to back correctly and it sucks.

When I got stuck indoors in 2020 with the Covid, I started playing ATS. I soon found the keyboard a pain in the butt which took away from the enjoyment of the game. Since I could not afford and did not have room for a wheel, I got a game pad (Logitech version of the XBox pad) and still use it. The game is so much more enjoyable with a controller rather then keyboard. As a former driver, I found the simulator (and ETS2) very relaxing and fun. Enjoyed your video. Keep on truckin!

There's head tracking units, but they're expensive too. You can do it with a webcam and some free software - CZcams can help you there. (I'm in The Netherlands by the way, so trucks are a bit different here, but wow the slower speeds was something I knew from the industrial area were I had to do most of the driving lessons with all the trucks there, but experiencing how 20 km/h over a speedbump was like a bouncing castle was pretty refreshing)

The tires on any vehicle wear over time from just rolling down the road. But, when you are turning your steers while maneuvering slowly, you get even more wear on them. Visualize the tire surface where it meets the pavement; you're not moving, or moving slowly while making larger turns. The tire gets a little more wear in that one spot and over time, this wears down steer tires.
Keep in mind, that there's a lot of weight on those tires. Next time I get a chance, I'll take a photo of a steer tire after it's done this; there's a swirl that you can see in extreme cases.

I used to drive in the real world. Obviously you know how to drive a truck. You are very patient with it which is something that is rare among people who play this game. Don't judge the game too harshly after your first delivery. It gets better, especially if you invest in a steering wheel, pedals, and shifter setup. I recommend that you go through your "options" pages one item at a time and keep tweaking them until you get what you like. Especially your "Keys and Buttons" menu. That is where most of your basic controls are until you get some " game controllers". I could not play this game without them as I cannot use a keyboard and drive.

It's fun watching you try to figure this out the very first thing I did was look over all the settings and set everything like left turn/right turn etc. The one thing you didn't do, that you should have. (grins) You also did not do a vehicle inspection... (wags finger at you) Esc at any time put you on hold and into the menu area for keyboard and other OPTIONS adjustments. It's like watching a teenager having his first driving lesson. (grins) Breaks are too sensitive. This is frustrating to watch. As you've done this reverse parking in real life, I can see your experience being used here - you pretty much imediately got how that trailer tends to react in relation to the truck, only struggling a little bit due to the keyboard controls. I think mouse steering is a pretty good inbetween, if you don't want to buy an actual steering wheel. You just move the mouse left and right to steer. Might be a bit more intuitive.
But really, you handled this first hands on really well. I've seen lots of people really struggle with the manouver of backing up a trailer itself while not struggling with the controls.

19:56 You have the nose of the truck on the intersection, that's why the other cars are stopping. They are programmed to think you are pulling out at that point, forcing them to stop.
29:22 This one is actually easier then you may think.
If you put the nose into the open spots on your left for just a bit further, then put it towards the fence as you did at 29:43.
Then reverse it into the open spots (see docks 5 and 6 for example) so your trailer rear is going towards the building.
Then move out of it going back to where you came from, making a 180 pretty much.
Then you can reverse it into the spot you are asked to place it in.
You should have plenty of space reversing it in then in just 4 moves
(move towards the gate, reverse into dock 5 or 6, move forward and straighten it out, reverse it into the dock you need to)
Trust me, it works, and I do it on Euro Truck Simulator where this same company lot is way tighter and that with b-double trailers.
(I don't have a drivers license in real life, but somehow I manage to park b-doubles just fine in narrow spots, haha)
I currently have 4611.3 hours in Euro truck simulator and 474.9 hours in American truck simulator (think it's obvious I like Europe better, harder challenges there)
I drive in both games since October 2018.
Not bad for your first attempt on driving in this game, a lot of people would do way worse.
Even real truckers I see race, crash and cause all kinds of trouble in this game all the time.
So you are doing actually very good, call me impressed. It shows you got real life skills in this and take your time.

You oughtta try it in VR! I ran Triple displays for years and took the dive for racing. ATS in VR is even more immersive. Sure you still have to deal with the stupid AI, but you can actually look over the dash off the end of your nose to understand your actual placement. I was bored enough I stood up and walked backward, and I could basically stand in the sleeper or sit in the passenger seat.
For reference points: My machine is over-built for use with iRacing in a higher-tier league (I'm a B-list driver, honestly)
AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, AMD Radeon RX 6900XT and 24GB of RAM.
I use an old Logitech G27 wheel rig. It's got a 6+1 position gear box (Reverse is on a safety lock out, but that wire snapped years ago) and a clutch pedal. For wheels, G29 or G290 are good modern options. Under $400, which is 'budget' for anything comprehensive. You could go up to direct drive but unless you're doing racing, you really have no need for Direct Drive wheels (or their obscene premium pricing)
Also bought for iRacing but invaluable in ATS: A Button Box. Specifically, Derek Speare Designs Race King LED. (Premium part, there are cheaper and more expensive options from other vendors). I use it for the ignition, a separate button for the starter, and from there I configured for preference; Safety toggles for parking brakes, tractor drop axles, differential lock, and I forgot the 5th switch function. Two other toggles, one for the jake brake and the other is my range selector for the gearbox. (My range splitter is my Left #3 button on the wheel), and I've mapped my turn signals to the paddle shifters.
I've got rotary knobs for: Jake brake strength, retarder/transbrake strength, wipers, in-game radio volume and in-game radio station. The 9 other buttons do lights, Select, and nagivate the in-game HUD Nav, truck dash mode and truck map mode.
G27 shift console does the Fuller-Eaton 18 speed gearbox, high beams, hazard lights, and trailer brakes. The wheel and my button box do ALL of my frequently used controls, except the O/S Load beacons. I just flat ran out of buttons lol

The beginning when you showed the lounge room was interesting as well, since playing this game often I find myself oddly imagining what a trucker life would be like - thanks for the video.

Thanks for checking out my video. If you want to see what a truckers life is like, check out my daily vlog videos - there are over 250 of them!
I also compare some aspects in ATS to real trucking in videos after this one.

@@Myotradventure I had to stop playing ATS because my temp set up I'm to close to the tv, so hopefully today I find a table that would work. How did you get to use your real picture?

I'm hoping you can get back into it. I think I cover that in the video after this one, or the one after that.

@@Myotradventure Well good news I'm back. Found a table that works from goodwill 8.00. I am planning to look at truck driving schools here in oregon. As of this month it is a requirement now. Honestly I'd rather go through training like that just hate that it cost 5,000.00 but to make money you got to spend money and I don't want to give a bad rep to all truck drivers. That's why I want to be trained right. I'll be back on ATS after work tomorrow. I'll check it out on that video.

If ever interested, we (group of 3 and growing) do a convoy run with USA & Canada map. Anyone with a mic, we use discord, to communicate with each other & Nick the Hick is host and we have a ball. So if interested leave Nick the Hick or Jason at JT Global a DM. Thank you and keep America rolling.

I suggest using the mouse steering as you can manuever the truck more precisesly and keep the steering wheel at any angle/position you want

Job well done! I made many a blind-side docking and it always sucked. I'm surprised you can't get out of the truck to look. That is a cardinal rule for blind-siding..."When in doubt, get out and look"!

Thanks BmacD 2! Yeah, not a fan of blind-side backing. Glad my truck had electric mirrors so I could adjust the passenger side mirror to help along with the window on that side in the sleeper.

I drive a DAF CF straight truck in the UK for a palletized load delivery company and play ATS and ETS regularly, it is quite addictive, and yes AI traffic is derpy
