In Nope, the latest from Jordan Peele, the residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. There are a lot of intriguing themes and concepts throughout the movie, as well as many lingering questions. Whats with the shoe? Just what is the alien anyway? So we're breaking down the story including all of bigger themes and ideas at play, as well explaining the ending.

FUN FACT: After the attack, Gordy signs “what happened family?” to Jupe. Another fun fact: Jordan Peele tweeted about a dream he had a few years ago about a baby chimp attacking some people, then running to him and hugging him in fear. He said he woke up with tears in his eyes, and I think that dream helped inspire the Gordy/Jupe storyline.
And it was also very obviously inspired by the Travis the chimp incident

Also, my niece had been watching some sort of YT true crime/horror stories a few months back, was woo'd by the incident/accident(*?) (I've used ??'s cuz it was sheer negligence & an incident just waiting to happen..) & gave me more insight that led up to4 that situation.

The standing shoe really isn't as confusing as people think it is. All it is is the literal definition of a "bad miracle". Something amazing to come out of a tragedy.
Edit: Wow, this is still getting comments and people still don't get it. There's a comment in here somewhere that helps what I'm saying. The example was when a cross is still standing after a tornado destroys a town. The destruction is bad, but the fact the cross is standing is a miracle. Same applies to the scene. Gordy murdered a lot of people which was the bad, but the shoe standing upright by itself was the miracle.

I think it's a good Miracle because it saved the one kid's life. If he had taken his eyes off the shoe and looked at the ape, it would have killed him.

There is a popular phrase called "waiting on the other shoe to drop". Its a saying that implies that despite something bad having happened, what's coming is much worse. We stare at the shoe standing up miraculously wondering when it will "drop" from its gravity defying position. The
Gordys Home incident was Jupe's first shoe,
rather than realizing he got lucky and his next encounter with an untamed wild creature would result in his demise "the other shoe dropping", he instead misinterprets the situation as many people have misinterpreted the meaning of the shoe.

I was always under the impression that waiting for the other shoe to drop didn't mean things were going bad presently. Quite the opposite, it means things are going so well that surely something horrible is right around the corner and about to happen or "drop". With this version in mind, I don't think that is what the shoe represents in that scene. To me it is part of the over all themes of spectacles and bad miracles.
@@iamV10010 It doesn't really require things to be going well or not. It just means that something (Usually something bad) is going to happen no matter what because of actions you've already taken and there's nothing you can do but wait.
This movie is incredible. It's stupid to me that people are disappointed that it wasn't a "traditional" alien story. I think one of Jordan Peele's biggest strengths is finding new, unique and interesting approaches to traditional horror.
This movies a dumpster fire. I task you with giving me a single good scene from this movie. Just 1. I’ll wait. But not for long as its a fools errand.

@@johnfarris3831 the only problem is that they don't usually recognize their own subjectivity, and have the need to desperately cloak it with "facts and logic". It's intellectually deteriorating to see things like that.

@@reallyinfrontofmysalad6976 Seems that whenever Jean jacket catches something like a horse or people it doesn't straight kill them. Seems like there stuck inside Jean jacket until later when it digest them and they get killed. Hence the rain of blood and the rain of coins that killed dad. That's also why you hear people screaming in the sky because there stuck inside Jean jacket as it's flying in the air.
While watching I noticed what killed their father, is also what allowed them to get a picture of it: A coin. Full circle literally.

The thing that I love about the sister's safety speech is that it's not really a safety speech. Sure she tells them to be careful and respectful of the animal but she doesn't go into specifics. As someone who works with animals, when giving a safety speech about animals you always go into specifics. "Don't look them in the eye.", "No sudden movements.", "No loud noises." ect. The actual speech that David K.'s character was originally trying to give. But since she never really had a chance to work with the animals she just repeats the parts of her father's speech that she remembers, the part that she can relate to.

Yep that’s why she didn’t add the extra great when talking about her great great great grandfather, it’s because she was mimicking her father’s speech who’d have only used the two greats.

Honestly the trailers for the movie totally played me. I wasn’t expecting this movie to do what it did which is what I will always love about Jordan Peele’s movies. Random small detail I thought was cool, when Em is giving the safety speech at the beginning, she says “and that man was my great great grandfather” and then OJ has to add another “great” on for her, because she’s copying the exact speech her dad used to give on sets, but she forgot to change that particular line when she was reciting it to be correct for her instead of her father. I just love those small world building details like that
My favorite world building part was when 40 people went missing and absolutely nobody cared

Even if Ricky’s past trauma can be profitable, it’s still surprising to me how detached he can be from such an incident. The Gordy attack was damn brutal.
It was, he assumes that at the end when Gordy didnt attack him that he had some sort of connection with the chimp, the same as when he tries to capitalise on Jean jacket eating horses.
What he doesn’t get is that Gordy didn’t attack him because he didn’t directly look him in the eyes (the shoe distracted him and the tablecloth was between them), and then he gathers a whole audience of people to directly stare at jean jacket, of course it ate them
Also, when he retells what he happened he does so describing an SNL sketch. Showing he is seriously fucked by what happened so much that he uses the sketch (a joke) to take its place when talking about it
It was legitimately the scariest part of the movie to me. Unhinged chimps just seem to prod the scary sensors in my brain, fucking terrifying

I actually like that it wasn't your average alien invasion film. What we got instead was much more interesting for the simple fact that that alien design is gorgeous. I about died when it opened up. Didn't think it was possible to make an alien couture yet here we are lol.

I think the reason why Jupe did not get attacked by Gordy is because he was fixated by the standing shoe, thus not making eye contact with Gordy, which ties in very well with the theme of the movie about dealing with wild animals.
If you look closely, the way the shot is framed also shows that his eyes were obstructed by the tablecloth most likely.
The scene in the barn where it turns out to be the kids? Everything before the second one pops out it's head was exactly like sleep paralysis to me. For myself it was the most frightening part of the film because it was the most relatable.

Yep! Kinda like how a coin killed Otis Sr & Em used coins to take pictures of JJ.
The shoe is another example of spectacle as well as the bad miracle. Jupe was spared from making direct eye contact with Gordy for some time because he was distracted by the spectacle of the miraculous shoe despite the immediate danger around him. Just as Jean Jacket only abducts creatures that look directly at it. Jupe lived due to the spectacle of the shoe. It also is the bad miracle as it caused him to believe he was "chosen" as he says. Coming full circle and causing his own death by making a spectacle out of danger.
Someone pointed out that there was cloth on the eye level between him and the chimpanzee, so they could not look each other in the eyes.
@@reginalannister2262 i think the reason that gordy didn’t kill jupe in the beginning is because of the fact that gordy actually trusted jupe (hence why gordy wanted to fist bump him under the table) Like u said when he fist bumps him there is a cloth covering his eyes but you can definitely see through it. I think jupe realized that gordy trusted him and tried to do the same with jean jacket, possibly thinking he is special enough to tame it. Hence why he calls himself the chosen one and why he says that if jean jacket didn’t trust them, then they wouldn’t be there in the first place.
Yes! It’s also a direct reference to an old twilight zone episode with the coin landing on its side transporting the protag to another universe of suspense and terror. it’s the same with the coin that entered the father’s head - it remained upright in the bio-hazardous ziploc bag, indicating that the characters (ricky, OJ, etc) are still in a universe where these bad miracles occur (like jean jacket)
I think the show being held up by it's heal is an example of waiting for the other show to drop. Like the trauma wasn't over.
Jordan Peele knows how to make uniquely disturbing movies. Well done.
It really is impressive considering his comedy works. Many would look at his comedic works and think he’d never be able to pull of 3 consecutive masterpieces (at least in my opinion)

@@Playboiolie I think traumatized is the word you're looking for over disturbed. Most comedians use humor to cope with their depression and struggles from whatever they may have suffered in their lives. Hence the expression, "The Tears of A Clown".

The digestion part really messed me up when I watched it. Unsettled me so bad and left me in fight-or-flight for the rest of the movie. Possibly the scariest movie I’ve seen this year

Idk how to explain it, but it’s like a body-horror/horror-vore type thing; you’re in the body of another giant creature that you don’t know anything about. It’s just… leaving you alive to scream and tire you out before it inevitably devours you, it literally squishes you, along with the rest of the group you were in, you’re completely at the mercy of this thing, using you as bait for its next meal…

I strongly believe that OJ did survive, people are just looking too deep into the song that played at the end. The theories were nice, but annoyed me.
He survived because he understood the alien and treated it as he treated his horses. He was quick to realize how it didn’t like loud noises, being looked at, etc etc. He was able to tame it for Emerald to have enough time to kill and capture it on photo. We didn't hear or see OJ's death. Sure, the alien was slowly charging towards him (Off screen deaths are lazy imo), but possibly stopped when sensing he wasn't dangerous

Oj died lmao u hear him get eaten if u listen closely during the face off and when J.J is ready to eat he evolves into the green square… just like when he ate the big jupe air balloon. Oj stared at JJ when he died to sacrifice himself for em. Also, at the end em looks over and is crying cus she has intuition that O.J is dead. He is shown behind a smoke screen with the words reading “out yonder” right in front of him. *out yonder meaning heaven or after life* Jordan peele did that on purpose he does nothing by accident. Another thing to consider is em is so filled with grief that she does not want to believe O.J is dead and after everything they went through she is imagining him which also fits the theme of the impossible happening. I didn’t think he died till I watched it again and it’s very clear although sad. Even Jordan peele hinted at his death in an interview. If you watch closely you will realize he is a hundred percent dead but Jordan left it as an ambiguous ending on purpose so people can choose to believe he’s alive or dead it’s really up to the audience but Jordan knows what he did on purpose to have the high probability of his death. The theme of grief is a huge part of the movie and once again comes to play at the end of the movie with em’s reaction to O.J’s death and is intended to make you cry.
@@jonboii4322 when the creature eats, it only transforms back into the saucer. Never did we see him die. That out yonder sign is up there because it’s legit at the entrance of the park facing both ways.. I like your theories though very touchy but I’ve watched this three times already and it doesn’t give me that ending at all. He’s alive man, that’s it.

I really liked the bit where JJ was flashing it's green part at OJ because it made JJ feel less like an apex predator alien monster here to murder all of humanity and more like a scared animal. It just ate everyone else, but it changed forms and flared it's colorful bit at OJ and didn't eat him when he refused to backdown. Then it did the same at the balloon, which was quite a bit bigger than what it normally interacted with but still looked like a human, and when the balloon "backed down" when it was pushed away it attacked and ate it because it was just an animal that didn't know it wasn't actually a person.
Also, I don't normally find scenes in movies horrifying, but that storm scene was so well done I can't really think of another way to describe it. The sound and visuals were fantastic.
The direction was incredible. The movie was shot really well.

I feel like Jupe sealed so many peoples fates when he started feeding JJ. He thought he could tame it just because of what was basically a misinterpretation of what happened with Gordy. Because let’s not forget that while Gordy was still a wild freaking animal that was exploited like crazy, he only attacked when he got triggered or when the person was moving enough to get his attention. Jupes eyes were mainly on that shoe and plus he was quiet and not moving. But with JJ he started feeding it and thought he could tame it. Neither Gordy nor JJ were ever tamed or tameable and it was more what happens when you feed a wild bear with JJ. It keeps coming back but it doesn’t trust you, and one wrong move (like if you have no food or trigger it) and it tears you to pieces. Now that it’s been fed by humans it starts going to more areas with human appearance which means it has to get dealt with because now it’s a danger to everyone. Moral of the story is please do not think that just because you feed it then it likes you

Sadly, there are plenty of YT videos of people incorrectly believing they were safe as they had “special bonds” with wild animals, or where feeding them went wrong.
Even deer…..just saw a “Wonder” wilderness mishap video where a dad and son fishing were aggressively pummeled by a deer, who the game warden believed was one a neighbor had been feeding.
Feeding can also be cruel in the long run. If you feed the local raccoons, and the young are taught mainly to find food by “just go to this guy’s back deck,” they are going to have a rough adjustment when that person moves, get sick, etc.
the crazy thing people miss the most is the Mantis. How the bad miracle of it getting stuck on the camera and also the fact that the mantis was upside down and didn't get sucked up because it was looking down and not at it.
I thought the creature's origins was meant to be concealed. On the surface, we think it's alien because it's unknown but in reality could've originated on Earth. Many animals on Earth, including insects and plants, have adapted to humanity for their benefit. Like JJ, it adapted by hiding in plain site and could've came from another part of the planet considering its speed and ability to remain hidden. Considering how many people have died throughout the film you would think someone would've noticed unless something else was at play, like the government was aware of it. Just food for thought though.
The TMZ guy did say that that area doesn't show up on Google maps, plus Jj seemed to like horses more than humans so it was concealing itself and definitely help from shady government. Jj could definitely be from earth, although I did see a fan theory about NOPE being a new acronym for Not Of Planet Earth
@@vincentsterlingluv I believe the NOPE aka Not From Planet Earth… it’s an extraterrestrial organism that can only survive on oxygen rich or biologically-advanced planets and hops from one to another either eliminating all “hostile” life or until it gets booted off a planet (or killed off)
No it's from space as the family lived there their whole lives and this started with the hikers in tht town, it only stayed bcuz it was fed, plz dont reach for the stars, the movie is clear cut and it adapted to what exactly, wht was it before....a eagle, a bat, like come on with the dumb shit, it's not earthly seeing it manifested a fuckin fake cloud and when it was hurt, it was tryna leave the atmosphere, smh

Also I'm pretty sure the Gordry story is heavily based on a famous accident with a pet chimp, Travis, who was considered to be a well socialized chimpanzee who starred in several commercials, until he attacked a woman named Charla Nash. The attack is pretty similar to what's shown with Mary Jo- from Travis/Gordy being shot while calm after the main incident, to the Veil that Mary Jo wears being extremely similar to the one Charla wore in some interviews.

I love all the details you pointed out about the movie and specifically Ricky’s whole character.
Also the digestive system wasn’t just crushing them, it was melting them with digestive fluid. That woman who was the first to be sucked up was getting her head slowly melted off.

It was flesh and blood from the partially digested horse above her, it's a bit hard to see but you can clearly make out a flayed horse's head just above.

The abduction was one of the most intense movie scenes I’ve ever seen. We saw it in IMAX and the sounds made it so immersive that I almost had to leave the theatre for a moment.
I went to “go get a soda” during that part lol. Something about it just clicked in my brain to make one of the scariest scenes I’ve ever seen.

I loved this movie. Especially how OJ kept his cool almost the entire time while everyone else was freaking out.
Jean Jacket creeped me out, like how it would quickly hide behind hills and clouds. And hearing the people screaming inside was a nice touch.
I also really liked how there seemed to be a cover-up about this creature with the news stories about possible flooding or how the area isn't on Google maps. I want more from this universe, is Jean Jacket really an alien or native to the earth? Are there more out there?
I heard a theory that JJ changing it's form was an intimidation display, trying to look as big as possible. The siblings had shown themselves to be a threat, so it changed shape.
I like that idea of why JJ changed shape. Another idea I like is that its intelligent enough to know they aren't looking at it so it cant eat them, so its trying to get their attention.

The area isnt on google maps because of the dissapearance of 40 people
Crime scenes aren't shown on google maps so it deflects peoples interest so they dont tamper with the scene

I LOVE the aliens design! The saucer itself is alive, and looks like a cloud. Being sucked up by one in ancient times looks like being raptured to Heaven, and the unfurled design looks like a Biblically Accurate angel design. I love the idea that these things have been here forever, and animals are mistaken for supernatural creatures, like dragons and unicorns

I always though of the shoe as a example of a Bad Miracle. With Jean Jacket kind of resembling a old testament Angel, and the fact that normally finding out there are extraterrestrials is amazing, I though the idea of miracles that are BAD are a really core aspect to the story. "What do you call a bad miracle?" Is it Still a Miracle? The Father got killed by money literally falling from the sky. Haven't we all wanted to have some mana from heaven?
Seeing as we don't all believe such a thing exists, no. A lucky break comes from other parts of the world, other people, events, etc. Unless we consider something as disgusting as the lottery to be "heavenly".

It’s actually the part of the story that I liked the least. I still feel like it’s too similar to the question being asked in signs which is “do you believe in miracles?”. This is a negative view in miracles but I still feel like it’s getting a bit to close to the same overarching theme. Obviously some homage to signs was awesome but I think there may have been a different theme that could have worked better. But what do I know, I am just a schmuck.

When OJ went to Jupe to talk to him about buying back the horses, I wondered why Jupe seemed to so easily shift the conversation to Gordy when Em was asking questions. I started to doubt his intentions with that move. And then later in the movie, Jupe invited them to his show. Was he intentionally trying to get them killed by Jean Jacket so he could take over the ranch and the remaining horses? OJ would never be able to buy the horses back, because Jupe was feeding them to Jean Jacket!
Jupe didn't know Jean Jacket was just a weird animal, he thought it was a ship with aliens inside that he was giving horses too. He wasn't trying to get them killed by it, he was finally ready to reveal JJ to an audience and wanted to show them

Daniel’s dismount off a running horse was one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a movie. Also, seeing his silhouette at the end made me so happy.

To be entirely fair this movie is still in theaters as of this video. Most of the films he does are several years old or at the very least have been out of theaters for several months by the time he covers them. Not all of course as I'm sure some "akshulay" person is preparing to tell me but I can understand why a publisher would be more quick to copyright claim something that's still in the middle of release over something that's made its paycheck already. I mean a lot of people even admit in these videos that they watch these instead of actually watching the film so it's not like the concern is invalid.

Why in the world did the TV dad come out of hiding to try to calm down Gordy? As far as he knew, there was no one left to save. He would have survived had he stayed put. Gordy’s death was sad to witness and undoubtedly traumatizing for young Jupe.

The shoe was a "miracle" simply beacuse since Jupe was looking at the shoe(because wtf why is it standing like that) and not into Gordy's eyes he did not get attacked in that moment. It plays into the rest of the movie whenever JJ gets agitated whenever someone is looking it in the eyes. As OJ stated looking a predator in its eyes is something you don't do unless you want to be attacked. The shoe was a miracle because it saved Jupes life and he does know that, which is why he kept it.
I mean he did look him in the eyes the chimp started smelling him and he recognized him, that's why he wanted to fist bump.
Maybe it's just me but. I also think that the tablecloth covers his eyes from Gordys perspective. As in the end, Jupe was looking at him
Loved the sibling relationship, what a cast, had me on the edge of my seat from the opening shot.
On top of all the themes mentioned, I think another important one is that if we continue to obsess over spectacle (in the news, pop culture, politics, etc), it can literally consume us (alter our minds, and relationships) like Jean Jacket did to his victims who didn’t look away. This is why we must know when to look away from it.

I think the chimp’s name was Travis. It is very traumatizing and takes a piece of innocence with you when you hear it. There is a documentary about the Harolds and Travis. Travis didn’t attack out of the blue, he had been grieving due to the loss of Jerome because it disrupted his routine and the hierarchy within the household. Unfortunately, Charla had come over to help calm him down with his favorite toy (she visited often, but wasn’t a steady constant in his daily life) he did not recognize her with a different hairstyle and that was the catalyst for the attack.
The call is haunting and OP said it best in their above comment.

That disgusting woman essentially held the equivalent of a six year old child hostage from birth. I only wish it had been the captor who was mauled and not an innocent visitor, because I have a deep hatred for people who own great apes. In my mind it’s a lesser form of slavery because these animals are literally the mental equivalent of a preschooler and yet they’re allowed to be kept as ‘pets’. I thought it was kinda cruel how the Gordy attack victim at the JJ feeding show didnt survive, she was sort of set up to survive in a perfect way, she was sitting alone because people were scared of her, and she had a veil on her face meaning she probably couldnt look the alien in the eyes, but for some reason she gets sucked up with everyone else. Also you would think the legendary cameraman who made his own camera before coming to the farm would have thought to make sort of indestructible film reels, not a plot hole or anything just that it would have made sense and Emerald wouldnt have to take a wishing well picture of the alien. Pretty cool movie overall though, theres a certain horror seeing a ''UFO'' flying around from cover to cover at night unnaturally fast, making the ''UFO'' an animal was brilliant because you realize if OJ didnt know how to work with animals, theres no possible way a human could outrun that thing let alone fight back against it, its a strange man vs nature situation in a science fiction template, I think thats what makes it most unique.

She made the choice again to put herself in the way of spectacle, and again suffered the consequences of it.
This movie was great. Slow at first. But I love the creativity and meaning Jordan puts into his work.

It's the best alien movie I've seen in years
Steven Yeun is such an amazing actor. Throughout the movie you can see he puts up a wall and plays a character when he’s talking to people. He’s always happy and charismatic and I’d imagine he’d be a fun guy to be around. But when he’s alone with his thoughts, or at least has to recount them with someone else you can see his true self start to crack through. He speaks soft and has a slower more nervous speech. It’s like he’s turning back into that to the young boy who witnessed a severely traumatic event. And I think it’s interesting at the end of the video that FF says that the Haywood’s were sort of owed that money they tried to make off JJ but what about Ricky. I would argue he’s sort of after the same thing. It’s not apples to apples but he’s someone who went through hell and was never given anything for it. The show ended and he went on to do anyone series before calling it a quits and founding Jupiter’s Claim. I think that JJ was his opportunity to get what he felt he deserved and what others gained from his tragedy. Unfortunately for him he never learned to not mess with wild animals, which is ironic

This film had absolutely none of that, but I felt was pretentious enough in trying to be. just the plot was awful, the characters acting was shambolic, they jumped to stupid conclusions about everything with little to no evidence. The alien. the whole focus of the film, no origin of where it came from, why it’s there, how it got and chose there, no explanation for anything, inflates into a party ballon at the end. Why? We’ll just never bother to explain, the film was a mess from start to finish
I love how authentically Black OJ and Emerald felt. They were such well-written characters. Speaking of writing, did Jordan Peele write Emerald with Keke in mind? They seem so similar as people, haha. When we first met Emerald, I thought, “Keke is just being herself,” but the next scene (and the rest of the movie) showed that Emerald had been putting on a professional persona in the first scene.

I liked their characters too but there's something that turns my stomach about the phrase "authentically black*. Like, are people in Kenya not authentically black ? How do you be authentically a skin colour ? I know what you mean but, idk maybe it just makes me think too much of political implications

I took jean jacket being a representation of a camera. When film first started coming out, people were terrified that looking directly at a camera would steal their soul and how it is a taboo for actors to look directly at the camera. And that a camera is constantly "consuming" content, content that is real and harmful. One of the reasons I took it this way was because of how the inner vent of jean jacket at the end was similar to a camera with its many square layers and how when we saw the clip of the first haywood was inside jean jacket.
I also think that there are parallels between Jupe's and Em's outcomes, they were the only ones left physically unscathed and have proof of what happened, thus marketing off of it. However, just like with Gordy, only 2 survive. I believe Em and Angel are the only survivors, as just with my cinema exp it was specific choice not to get a close up of OJ but seeing him from a distance on lucky. The last haywood horse wrangler on the last horse, in a square frame just like the original. I further believe this because of Em reaction, she went from relief to a pained expression. I think she realize just like Jupe did that fame and money come at a price, that being her family, home and legacy.
Of course this is just what I speculated

i agree with your first part the eye is a camera but OJ lives because he figured the thing out he had the banner rope still dangling and tried not to move much but still looked it in the eye just like the fake horse JJ was not sure he was real or something that would hurt it when EM startet moving its attention fell on her she moved and so she was eatable. the last scene with OJ was an homage to the old western when the cowboy tiped his head to his comrades and rode into the sundown at least that is what i make of it

i think one thing thats overlooked about nope is the utilization of jean jacket’s scale. like his sheer size and speed shown throughout the film just really did it for me and was just absolutely terrifying how quick and quiet he can be, until hes right upon you. just awesome.
Man that barn scene with the little kids gave me total Signs vibes scared the shit out of me lol great way to play with us because we definitely all thought there were actual aliens and not this huge monster.
The Gordy scene has to do with Jordan Peele working at MadTV. Bobby Lee talks about it on his podcast since they both worked together. And Bobby talked about how Jordan told him he specifically put that part in the movie to represent his time at MAD. And I assume having to be the dancing monkey at MAD and he mentions how Jordan had like 1 or 2 episodes left on his contract and they wouldn't let him leave to audition for snl and he didn't get hired on at snl because of it. Believe he said that he filmed those scenes of the monkey on the show at the old spot MAD filmed at too specifically.

Oh wow I didn’t know that! The Gordy scene seems to be SUPER layered because there was a chimp named Travis..super famous, was in movies, Old Navy commercials, etc. and when he got older attacked his owner’s friend and maimed her much like Mary jo.. you’ve just added more to what I already knew.
What did it have to do with the movie? It added nothing, meaningless misdirect. And I don't need an explanation of what it's a metaphor for... It doesn't add to the film.
@@mangaas it explains why Jupe was so obsessed on "taming" the alien. When the ape fist bumped him instead of hurting him like it did with the others Jupe thought he can somehow calm it down but it was shot before he can try it. he kept feeding the alien for 6 months thinking it(they) will become friendly to him just so he can recreate his childhood success by working alongside another unpredictable different species. Also the ape mirrors the alien as a wild animal, no matter how you think you tamed and trained them well, little things can still set them off. For example the ape went crazy with a simple balloon pop and same when the alien ate that fake horse.
This movie had me and my husband discussing it for 3 days. The visuals were stunning. I especially loved the moonlit clouds.

They established that no one should look directly at the ship. Why in the world did Holst do just that and get himself killed!? He could have filmed the ship without looking at it.
Imo he was obsessed with predator-prey thing (watching that all the time at home). I think he wanted to make the best and ultimate document/spectatcle.
It's implied he had a short life left, maybe due to some terminal illness or some other reason; perhaps he knew he was dead either way and at least wanted to go out knowing he got that impossible shot after all. Died happy at least.

Jean Jacket’s species is probably cannibalistic, it thought the flying Jup was another member of its species since it was the only other floating practically formless thing in the sky with one eye and it still ate it. Jean jacket’s species might have an extremely high reproductive rate to offset this. They survive through fighting through territory in their home environment.

I think it’s more that eye contact is often seen as a sign of aggression/dominance like with bears, dogs or leopards. In those cases it’s usually due to you being in their territory first and feeling the need to defend it. Similarly to how Jean Jacket has claimed this land and doesn’t like his dominance challenged on “his turf.” Jean Jacket also doesn’t give a fuck if you look then look away, he still pouncing if he catches you looking in the first place, so it still applies. If a tiger pounces on you without you noticing it first, I imagine it is just hunting you, not necessarily defending territory. Like the horses that Jean Jacket eats, they do not make eye contact with the creature, but it is actively hunting so it “pounces”
Maybe JJ is from an alien world where things like itself can only spot prey if they look at them
Fun fact, the design of Jean Jacket wasn't inspired by biblical angels alone, they also based it off of jellyfish to tie in a real animal element, and they also based it off of a tattered weather balloon as a reference to the UFO sightings that have ended up being that
I really love this movie actually, it’s the first movie in a long time to actually scare me, probably because it reminds me a bit of fire in the sky (witch absolutely traumatized me as a kid) mainly the scenes of what happened to the people after the aliens got them, yet Nope was so different from what you’d expect from an alien movie, where even the seemingly unrelated things have meaning. All and all Peel really outdid himself on this, and I love his creativity.🌟
I think Jordan Peele was just trying to emphasize on the fact that all his movies are spectacles and everybody expects a spectacle but he proved this movie that he could make a beautiful cinematic production with a small script a small cast and an extremely small set and I think that's exactly what he did showing that you can make a good movie and it's not about the spectacle of it it's about how you produce it and the actors in the work put behind it

This movie worked for me on so many levels. I walked into this movie hoping for it to be about the unknown, show a giant alien spaceship, and have that unique western setting. I got all of that, and then some more with the Gordy scene (which could have been its own short film,) and what Jean Jacket actually was!

Really glad I watched this! I didn't catch that OJ sold 10 horses to Jup already and wanted to buy them back but obviously he couldn't cause they were already eaten by the alien.
Also for the final form it was heavily inspired by the "Angels" from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The 'Standing shoe' is what is called in the movie as a 'Bad Miracle' because as the shoe is standing upright by itself is a miracle the events that took place around it were the exact opposite. Hence the phrasing a 'Bad Miracle'.
The money falling from the sky in the start of the movie is another bad miracle

I live pretty close to Agua Dulce, and seeing it as the setting for the attacks, alien or not, is so awesome, especially since it’s usually used for alien planets because of spots like Vasquez Rocks.
Nope was an awesome movie IMO. Loved the design of Jean Jacket who is a contender for the best memorable monster from the Tethered; the Grabber, and others. The chimp scene was horrific, maybe more than the abduction scene, but it is one of my 20 or so favorite movies of 2022.

This film has definitely squeezed its way into one of my favorites. I love that “Signs,” was one of the inspirations for this, along with many other masterpieces, and I could totally get that vibe from the eerie silence and just random calm views of the spaceship and weird sounds echoing around.

I think he lived too simply because if he didn't Jordan Peele broke his own rule.
He showed clearly that Jean Jacket has to transform into its saucer form to ingest anything and its big ass didn't have enough time or space to switch forms to eat OJ and double back in its squid/angel form to transform yet again to eat the Jupe balloon.
I think it's weird people think he died at all. It's pretty obvious.

I was anticipating getting to see a review from you on this movie. You cover everything so well!! I loved everything about this film. It was just so unique, from the way it wasn’t your typical alien invasion movie, to the cinematography and the Bible verse, metaphors and innuendos. This movie was just the perfect blend of cosmic horror, action and science fiction.

Dude I absolutely love your videos. You are probably one of the ONLY creators I've seen that understood that Jupe was heavily traumatized and it continued to affect him. All other takes I've seen have described Jupe as "emotionless" and "fame-hungry"
I thought the trauma was obvious but sadly not many reviewers caught it

So I’m a huge horror movie buff and it’s too the point I sadly do get scared as easily as I’d like or as often. But I have an extreme fear of aliens as they could do whatever they want and I could do nothing. This movie absolutely scared me to the point of wanting to cry several times. It truly scared me and it became one of my all time favorite horror movies. I know I’m incredibly bias because of my fear. I love exception subversion so the twist was amazing and if anything made aliens scarier to me 😬
The scene (technically more then one scene but this whole part built together for me )the stuck out and haunted me the most , was from when Jean Jacket first was revealed as it came out for the show, to the digestion scene, the screams of people who were being digested for hours echoing inside Jean jacket them the blood rain. I couldn’t breath in relief until they got to Angels house. There’s so many elements to this movie I adore. Literally I want to talk about this movie so bad and my family is annoyed already and my boyfriend loves to listen but is a man of few words.
The movie also makes me think of the whole web thing of the Mystery Flesh Pit National park
I love the way this dude tells the movie as if he were reading us a story or something. even if you didn't see the movie he says enough to get you to visualize what's happening. this really makes it for me.

Sucks to hear all the copyright but I think that's expected with NOPE. When no one knows what the movie is about showing parts from the movie will expose it so you can talk about it but not allowed to show it. Hope this video does well
P.S. Deadmeat is dealing with copyright issues with movies as well so maybe movie studios are restricting people's videos on movies
Real smart move, studios. Go after the guys that are keeping me interested in your movies. I hadn't even heard of some these movies that folks like FoundFlix, Deadmeat and others are reviewing and I'm undecided on many I do know until I hear their recommendations on them.

Man I watched this twice and slept through it due to work related fatigue. 3rd time made me like the movie and seeing more detailed explanations I missed is really great!
So glad you were able to upload something! After watching the movie two days ago I was looking for the FoundFlix explanation because I’ve always loved your input. My favorite scene, and most terrifying to me personally, was when Jean Jacket finally got pissed off and had the Mexican stand off in the rain with OJ. While a group of 30+ adults, elderly and children being jettisoned around while simultaneously being depressurized into alien soup is both visceral and horrifying beyond nightmarish-belief. The peak out of the door followed by the titular line while looking up into the dark cloud void with nothing but a string of colored flags hanging down is just chefs kiss(and a striking sense of megalophobia). And JJ effectively “spitting” on him was the start of JJ going from just feeding to full on frenzy.

The best explanation I heard for the up right shoe (a.k.a. a bad miracle) was that it helped Jupe keep from locking eyes with Gordy. If he had locked eyes with Gordy then he would have interpreted it that as a challenge and attacked. By the time Jupe realized Gordy noticed him, Gordy had calmed down and interpreted Jupe's focus on the show as submission.
Honestly this is my favorite from Jordan Peele. The cinematography, the thrills, the chills, the cast of characters which where all casted perfectly for this. The comedy is at it strongest here especially the alien creature was a really interesting concept I loved how it wasn’t a ship the whole thing was a freaking creature. Incredible. I was overly excited while watching it and had major and genuine reactions here. I sorta made a prediction that the murder chimp was controlled by an alien or a shape shift of one idk because the shoe standing up like that was some key point idk. But I also liked how the alike sucked up the people and kinda like dissolved or ate them and spit their blood all over the house that scene was crazy. There is a lot of great moments in this movie and that final showdown was incredibly well done. Easily my favorite Peele movie so far.
