- Our Thor Class C Magnitude gets punished on the McCarthy Road to Kennecott. Was it a mistake? We do get some damage. Not as bad as the Ice Road Truckers route in winter but then this is summer. This is what RV Fulltime Living is all about.
Taking our Class C motorhome to Alaska the Last Frontier so we can get to some remote areas and drive on roads less traveled. Like up to the Arctic Ocean or Kennecott and McCarthy. We also give an update on how our Dishy and Starlink is working after several months in Alaska, RVing the roads of the Last Frontier.
We get nervous because we see a Van Lifer or Van or RV Van or Van Life wrecked on the side of the road. Not sure how serious it is but we ask if they need help. They have it taken care of with some residents. Nice people. The driver is ok.
We've been planning this Alaska RV road trip for over a year and we're doing it. Enough talk, let's walk! Well...we'll drive but you get the picture.
We want to spend more time exploring Root Glacier, Kennecott Mining Historic Site or is it Kennicott (?) and the nearby town of McCarthy from the TV show fame, Edge of Alaska. What could go wrong on the worst road in Alaska? We've been using Starlink / Star Link for video and communication. It's been doing good and we update our speed findings so far. The TV show Edge of Alaska was based on this town and we're curious as to what is going on in this frontier town.
Our RV is a Thor Magnitude so we hope it survives but the views are magnificent, awesome and stunning so the trip is a once in a lifetime event.

We like to "Switch it Up" between resorts and campgrounds and boondocking is always an option.
We draw inspiration from Keep Your Daydream KYD, Less Junk More Journey, Finding Our Someday and Changing Lanes. We normally travel in an HDT similar to CZcams channels Suite Travels and Watts on Wheels. I also get some ideas from the editing style of Happily Ever Hanks (Happilyeverhanks) #thankshanks and believe it or not, I actually learned something from MRBeast Mr Beast video's as well.
Our journey is the destination. We want to share in our experiences in our discovery of What's Next.

We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.

Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.

2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL

There wasn't even a foot bridge when I visited 20-ish years ago. There was a small cable tram and you pulled yourself across the river.
Wow! Now that's Frontier Alaska. So cool. The bridges were really nice and the area is beautiful. The roads give it character for certain.

I live in Glennallen, Alaska. I had never driven to McCarthy until 2019. I have lived here 48 years. My husband and I drove our jeep. We rented and atv from a local resident to do our tour. I believe their are people who take tourists to McCarthy on a shuttle bus. Most people don't recommend taking a motorcoach on that "road." My sister from Georgia wanted to drive my mother's van out there. We discouraged her. My brother-in-law flew my sister and her husband to McCarthy in his airplane for the day. You guys did well. I did notice there weren't any other motorhomes parked by the Kennicott River. It can be done. Just know it is a big risk.
We were definitely the biggest one on the road! It's definitely not recommended but we love the area... just not the drive.

My wife and I drove to Alaska from Maine in 2009 with a 5th wheel. We didn't go to Valdez or the Dalton Highway. The trip was three months and we didn't see half of the sights. This was one of your best videos yet. We really enjoyed.

Lots of good travel info in this video. Always smart to plan ahead and drive cautiously (sorry about the step getting banged up... no matter how careful, things still happen). Good to hear Starlink is working so well and you're able to stay connected while out so remotely (got me more interested in it). What a great few days, taking advantage of some neat expeditions exploring the glacier and mine. Such beautiful country and glad you're out there enjoying it. the McCarthey road showed me just how the crazy kind of a guy you are. Guess that's what I like about you, did you see any bears while on your bikes. apparently not, I didn't see the camera take flight. glad you found the vehicle bridge, as I wondered when you were at the mine, how they got all the lumber to the mine for the upgrades across that small foot bridge

Yes, that was partially why we wanted to visit longer in this area. We had been for part of a day in 2017 but wanted to spend more time exploring the area. We weren't disappointed.
It was nice meeting you folks in person! We have been watching all of your videos on the Alaska trip. We visited most of the spots you shared with us.
We drove to McCarthy about 4 weeks before you folks and have to say this is the worst road (60 mile of washboard) in Alaska.
Dalton Highway to Deadhorse was much much better road than this!!!

They were spectacular. A bucket list item for certain.
I especially enjoyed this episode because I love outdoor adventure shows and some I've watched are set in Alaska have been centered around the McCarthy area and the Kennecott mine. I commend you for taking on that road with Curiosity, luckily the damage was minimal. Also, your photos and video work are top notch, I almost feel like I'm there with you. What an adventure you are having, see you next time!

If you do plan a trip however don’t believe the travel agents….you need at least a month down here to do it properly. I did not mention the food either! You can eat your way from coast to coast. Oh my god that bridge at 6:55 got me, I would not have crossed that “planked, yes, skinny” bridge. I watched the reality show Edge of Alaska, I recognized some of these houses and when they built the generator house. I liked the hike to and on root glacier, just beautiful. Awesome video as usual, safe travels!

Wow, amazing and so beautiful. I loved McCarthy. I used to watch Edge of Alaska all the time. I loved it, wished it still came on tv. It is very remote and I just love that it is. I am surprised you did not see any wildlife, it sure looked like bear country. I am really impressed at they way you are seeing Alaska, and this is the way to see the beautiful state. Did that to our steps, too. Ugh.
We were able to salvage them for a season by attaching a tow rope to the step and the other end to a tree. Slowly (slowly) rock the transmission in reverse.
That's a great idea...I think I'm just going the replacement route. Ugh! It does happen.

Funny, the Nomadic Ramblers were just up there and had the same observations about "the shortcut". It was interesting to follow your visit after having watched the entire documentary series "The Edge of Alaska" and seeing the town developed and the generator installation and wiring of the town.

Very nice video, your videos show more of Alaska than other youtubers by 100 percent and you get out there and film. Can you tell us how your motorhome is holding up? Somethings you would do different when preparing a C class for a trip like this.
Thank you very much for the kind comments. The Class C is doing really well. We'd change the suspension from leaf springs to Sumo or Liquid Springs if we were to do it again. I'd probably add a 2" lift kit to the suspension as well. Otherwise, the mods we did prior to the trip are working great.
