    Spaniard, not a clay court specialist, single handed backhand, goes to net, doesn't grind and run a billion miles to win one point. This guy is the unicorn of Spanish tennis. Congratulations Feliciano.

      InsideOutBH how come they are called clay court specialist? How come players are not called grass court specialist? Or even Hard court specialist? NADAL is better on clay courts but is he a clay court specialist? He's won 2 majors on Grass 3 on hard courts.

      And last year?
      When was the last time he won a grass title?

      Though 2nd-tier events, the ATP 500s at Dubai, Barcelona, Halle, Queens, Beijing and few more have come up with some extravagant trophies, which give viewers a feeling as if the winner has won a grand slam. Where as, when one looks at Madrid Masters 1000 trophy, it seems as if the winner is lifting a Challenger event trophy. That Madrid trophy is nothing compared to these giant ones.

    Very happy for Lopez after that tough loss to Dimitrov in 2014, just shows age is just a number if he can achieve these feats at 35. On grass and any other fast surface, he can do a lot of damage and what is more fitting about winning his first singles ATP 500 title is that he is already a Grand Slam champion in doubles (winning the 2016 French Open). Would love to see him win the Wimbledon doubles on his best surface or even go far in the Wimbledon singles.

      I just looked up his previous matches this week:
      against Gilles Muller, Cilic lost 17/78 points. Against Donald Young, he lost 5/49. Against Kozlov, 7/39. Against Isner, 6/46. That makes for on average about 9 points on service lost in a match. Pretty impressive, but not nearly as much as "only lost 10 service points all week before the match".

      Grass is Lopez's best surface, lol. Unlike many other Spaniards, his style of play is more suited to fast courts than the slow slog of the clay. Plays a flat ball typically but varies with the slice, is not afraid to approach the net, and has a strong serve.

    • @OracleTruth24
      @OracleTruth24 Před 7 lety +14

      It's a matter of movement on a given surface. Lopez finds better footwork on the grass. His contemporary, David Ferrer, prefers those small steps on the clay. If you move well, good court positioning allows you to hit the returns you would normally net.
      Nadal was a special case for many years, in that he obviously preferred clay, but is so skilled and fast that he was able to adapt to grass' slick surface. For some reason or another, he has yet to rediscover that form.
