How Long Should Your Tie Be?

- How far should a tie come down the body when you are wearing a kilt? Good question. The basic rule of thumb, as we see it, is that the tie should just graze the top edge of the kilt. The lads explain why they feel this way and go on to discuss other ways to make sure your necktie looks sharp with your traditional kilt.

I agree with Rocky on this. I use a trinity knot for my tie which makes it easier to keep the tie at the correct length if I am wearing one with my kilt. It looks good and it takes up the extra length well.
Trinity knots are great, but not all patterns lend themselves to them.
I hate to be a know-it-all, but I feel I must weigh in here. “Toilette” is a French word, and still is the routine of getting ready in the morning when I’m its singular form, as it was there (i.e. « la toilette »). However, in its plural form (i.e. « les toilettes »), then it is just what it seems like. As a French teacher, I felt it my duty to educate. Forgive me if I come off as overbearing or out of line.
Eric's Thunder Bucket term is one I am well familiar with.
Thanks, this is useful information.
To add to my previous comment, if the total length of the tie will result in the back being longer than the front when the front if just right, tie a larger know. As an example if you tied a half Windsor, retie a full Windsor.
I totally agree with you, Rocky.
Well this raises the question. Are Tartan ties ordered from you guys typically shorter so you don’t have to worry about trying to finagle the length?
For me a broad knot with a cut away collar looks smart. Thickness of tie plays a part. My Clarke tartan tie (from Lochcarron) is bulky compared with my Manx hunting tartan tie which is 'thinner' & much easier to tie a Windsor knot.
How about you guys do a video tutorial to help those who may struggle with tying neckties?
I learned as a cub scout and then forgot after years of needing only pre-tied ones for uniforms. I found a couple of sites that had tutorials for several knots and have been enjoying learning new ones.
Must be nice to be so tall that you have the option to adjust where the point of the tie ends up. Us short guys don't get a choice. Once tied, and the two ends are aligned, there's no where else you can go - it's falls where it falls. You can always make it longer, but there is no shorter. If you're lucky, it just about exactly hits the top of your belt buckle on a pair of trousers. At 5'7", if I were any shorter I'm not sure how I'd be able to wear any ties at all.
Bespoke ties.😉
All I heard there at the end was zoidberg not the stooges
+USKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the stylist perspective.* At 胡桃河町日系油童教會 Japanese Christian Church of Walnut Creek (CA, USA), a member Congregation o' the 東宣北米神聖教會 OMS (viz., Oriental Missionary Society) Holiness Church of North America, I tuck in neckties betwixt the bottoms o' the midshirt pockets as standard uniform practice.
