You should be a life coach!! Truly awesome advice. I couldn’t count the number of times I have abandoned stuff because one silly little thing bugged me. Still inclined to be the same…so thanks for the friendly pep talk!
Me too Bonnie ;)
I'd be a terrible life coach... my solution to any problem would be colouring-in! tee hee. I still have plenty of things that bug me in my sketchbooks and my advice is just stick something over it! Thank you Bonnie
@@HelenWellsArtistcolouring in is the best advice Helen! It is calming, therapeutic and fun 😁 so is doodling! Also it is the perfect way to get out of your head ❤ I have found over the last three years that it helped me solve problems that plagued me before. I also credit knitting and crochet for helping me to both relax and solve said problems. So yes...colouring in is a perfect de-stressor 😁😊
I have been practicing art journaling for 6-7 years and I have learned so much from you in just one video!! I have so many abandoned sketchbooks! I am going back to your sketchbook class and re watching the videos! Thank you so much Helen!!
Wow that’s so lovely to know Susan. Thank you so very much. I really appreciate that x
And repetition is so comforting & satisfying
Hello Helen , thank you again for another lovely lesson. Your sketchbooks are so beautiful and I absolutely love the colours you use. I started my first sketchbook around 2 years ago and got lost in the process and was about to give up when I came across your website and I have not looked back since. I have also been doing slow drawing mainly just with different marks working slowly and making lovely patterns from repeating the same mark over and over just changing it slightly as I go and this has helped me a lot as well. I have a way to go yet at being happy with what I achieve but I am getting there and I can see I am getting better at it so this encourages me to keep going. I have always found you to be so helpful and encouraging so one again thank you Helen.
Oh Isabel what a super lovely message, very encouraging for me, thank you. so much x
That is how my old sketchbook habits have been. Start it...get a few pages in with motivation and excitement...do one page I hate and abandon it.
This seems to be a very common pattern, I'd gently encourage you to keep going, stick something over the page you don't like....xx
I love love these teachings and seeing your sketchbooks. I learn so very much. Thank you for this soooo much 🙏🏾👁🙏🏾
Oh wow thank you Kim, that is super kind of you. Thank you.
I now experience the freedom of playing in my sketchbooks and not caring if it doesnt turn out that well. Im that way about 90% of the time.
I remind myself that sketchbooks are a safe place to play, learn and push myself to try new things. I find i dont need to remind myself as often as i used to; its sinking in.
I needed to hear this! Thank you so much :) I'm so harsh on myself and that makes me not enjoy the process. Best advice i've heard about art ever. Especially repeating, not stopping and always exploring and trying
Oh I'm so glad it helped.... it's been hard won wisdom, as I too used to be super critical and harsh about my own creations. xx
That is so true draw it again and again ,practice practice and practice is key
Oh thank you so much Sandy, you’re spot on xxx
I really appreciate your wisdom and your kindness. Thank you for being so encouraging, helpful and colourful. 🌈 ❤🌈
What a super lovely thing to say! Thank you so much x
Nod nod… well said. I will take heed. Be brave. Go beyond. Be kind. Have fun.
Excellent summary. Thank you so much xx
There is so much good advice in this video and it is lovely to see inside your sketchbooks. I used to fill lots of sketchbooks when I was at college but recently just use my small sketchbook for rough ideas. After looking back at my old college sketchbooks I realised how important they were to me and how many memories they hold so now I am working in my sketchbooks again. Thank you for all of your inspirational videos.
Oh wow how lovely! Thank you so much. My sketchbooks are the wellspring of all my art…love Helen x
Thanks Helen, greart advice and suggestions. Your sketchbooks make me feel happy, love your shapes, pattern and delicious colours.
Oh thank you! What a lovely thing to say. x
Thank you so much Helen. Sometimes it is hard to go on and I love getting your advice and encouragement. :)
You are so welcome... good luck with all your creative endeavours...
Thank you for pointing me towards this video. Great advice. I too am guilty of abandoning sketchbooks when I didn't like what I'd done with it. And I think the message that you don't have to share your work with anyone is a good one too in this day and age where everybody is on social media, and it's so easy to dismiss your own work because you don't think it's as good as someone else's. Thank you for reminding me to just keep on filling those pages.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your sketchbook journey. Helen x
more great advice! i am just coming out of a time when i stopped ... thank you Helen.
Oh thank you Gail, wishing you lots of luck with your creative endeavours...
What a glorious video Helen, thank you! I was always told at school that I was terrible at 'art' and so it took me until I was in my thirties to have the confidence to start experimenting with textile art. I am no longer able to do that due to health problems and have started experimenting with drawing and colour..I have found your channel at just the right time. I had the idea of using felt tips due to ease of use and was unaware that so many beautiful quality pens existed. I am so excited to start exploring!!
Oh how fabulous you are, thank you and wishing you all the best with your art explorations xx
Absolutely perfect advice. And I am one of those with many journals incomplete languishing. Taking your advice in hand. Yay

Oh wow thank you so much Angelica x
Wow amazing beautiful truly wonderful advice thank you 🙏
You are so welcome Cathy. Thank you x
Thank you SO MUCH for your videos. You are a very generous artist! It’s so easy to get discouraged when doing art, not just “how good at it” a person is, but so many things come up in life (at least for me) that just derail the artistic process for long stretches of time…any advice on that?
You are so welcome! Thank you. That is such a good question, about being derailed by life getting in the way, I know what you mean, when this is the case I lower my expectations about what I can achieve, but commit to small achievable tasks 10 minutes in my sketchbook etc, small and often has been a good pattern for me...
Such great advice and beautiful art journals Helen! I watched all the class videos yesterday and am in the process of making my first art journal inspired by you.
Wonderful! Oh that's so great to know kerri. Thank you so much, have fun! Helen x
Great advice x
Oh thank you so much Trudi x
Fabulous advice. Previously all my art is very tight, very exact and I’m desperate to break out. Not sure how I’m going to do it but I’ll give it a go
Oh thank you so much. A clear intention is always a good place to start…it’s not always as easy as it may appear…wishing you every success..on the journey to getting where you want to get to…xxx
Thank You So Much For This🎨😊👍👍
My pleasure 😊 thank you for watching x
Very inspiring 💝
Oh thank you Izzy , that's kind...
Danke Helen! - Du bist außergewöhnlich mitreißend - ich habe mir bereits viele kleine Sketchbooks geknifft und beschriftet - irgendwann werden die Bücher größer werden. Dennoch - VIELEN DANK :)
I like having a few books on the go, a variety of sizes !
❤ thankyou for inspiration 😊
Oh you are so welcome Sarah. Thank you for watching x
Love your art and these videos. Just found you and instantly subscribing.
Welcome aboard! Thank you, for your kindness and encouragement! Love Helen x
Great advice, Helen. I agree with Bonnie. I start, don't like, abandon, start something else. Lol!! Ok, going to stick with it and see what happens. Question; what are the sketchbooks that you are using there, please Helen? Thanks so much again for your video, going to keep it handy to watch when I start thinking about abandoning something!!!
Good luck with it and thank you for your lovely comment.... I like to use a sketchbook from Fabriano called the Venezia Book, but that's just my personal preference...x
@@HelenWellsArtist Thank you Helen. I'll check them out. Hugely appreciated and have 'sketchful' day.
Wonderful, WONDERFUL advice. Thank you so much. I notice that some of your sketchbooks seem to have more pages in them. Do you join several together or use larger sheets of paper?
Oh thank you so much Brenda. That’s so kind of you. Yes I quite often make an accordion or concertina sketchbook by joining pages together xx
💖💖💖
Thank you so much x
A question. Do you work on the pages of your sketch books in order from the front to the back of the book? I like working on multiple pages, jumping around through the entire book, so no page is blank asap
Good question... the answer is both, I have sketchbooks which are pick and mix and I open them at any page...and I have sketchbooks that I work through mostly in order, although I often skip the first page and circle back to it.. the first page is always a little loaded with expectation x.
This video is encouraging ✨ Can I ask what kind of sketchbook / paper would you recommend?
The type of sketchbook you use really depend on where and when you will be making art, do you want it to be small and portable or do you want it to take lots of paint. I’d always start with a cheap one that you don’t mind messing about in… x
@@HelenWellsArtist Thank you for the advice! I'll start with that
