The reason that slaking had its first turn be a turn of truant is because Linoone dies of indirect damage, in this case burn, Slaking comes out at the end of that turn and not at the beginning of next turn. This means that the game reads that turn as slaking's first active turn, thus making the next turn be a truant turn. It's a very weird feature/bug. The same can happen if the Pokemon ahead of slaking dies from sandstorm, hail, poison, and other things, probably fire spin/whirlpool type things as well
Yeah. That actually happened to Chuggaaconroy before during the battle against Glacia of all people.
Holy shit that’s so cool
Good observation dude
I thought it mons always come out before the end of a turn but after end of turn items activate. a mon switching in because of a k. o. takes hail damage iirc, but wont activate an item like flame-orb. unless they changed it at some point after gen3.
also what happens when you switch into slaking voluntarily (no knock out happening)?
Whoa
10:26 The reason Double Slap can hit more than 2 times while Double Kick cannot is because Double Slap's name in japanese is just 'round-trip slap' which suggests its just a wide-arching pimpslap done over and over.
So basically, they gave it a weird english translation that doesn't quite line up with how it works. Pretty common with early-gen moves.
It also hits everyone else in a double battle. Round trip indeed
So it’d be more accurate to translate it to “Slap Around” or something?

@@DaenaMichelle eh. That might have been an iffy name to use 😂
Imagine feeling triumphant after landing a Thunder Wave only to see this tank slowly lumbering toward you at roughly the same speed as before lol.
I'd absolutely love a weather counter exactly as you described it (pops up with the turn number when needed, goes away when no weather is active)! And yeah, a pop-up for Reflect, Light Screen etc. would also be nice - essentially things that the status screen in the modern games show, but, of course, do what you can without overworking yourself with this kind of stuff, they're not crucial to enjoy your videos, at least for me; your layout is already very nice as is.
Part of the issue you were having with Brawley's makuhita is that it has Thick Fat which halves fire damage. The same goes for Glacia's sealeos and walrein.
Hmm, I do think screens/weather counters would be nice. Was impressed, didn't really think much of torkoal until it got the drought ability in gen 7. Those defensive strats with sunny day were genius!
Your videos are honestly such a delight to listen to. I work as a freelance illustrator, so I spend a lot of time just drawing at my desk with a desperate need for things to listen to while I work (ADHD life), and your videos are equal amounts interesting and chill! Loving your Gen 3 series, and even if you say you're still learning these games, I think it's a lot of fun watching you slowly get used to them.
Thank you for the content!
You're welcome!
I also need lots of stuff to listen to while I work. It's one of the reasons I like long form content so much. I can be doing whatever task keeps my hands & mind busy while listening along to something!
You were right about the thing with slaking coming in at the end of the turn due to burn damage. It's a gen 3 thing and also happens in double battles when you know out a pokemon it is immediately replaced instead of waiting for the end of the round
YO! Can't wait to see this incredible Solo run of Torkoal, slow and steady wins the race? No idea how our fire turtle will handle this. Fun thing about Torkoal, in the Mystery Dungeon Games, it is seen as an elder for some hot springs. White Smoke will be useful in preventing any stats being dropped on you by random Pokémon throughout the run. Will dive into it more once it is done and I am also finished with the wood work (I have to chop up and bring in wood today). Until then, I will edit the comment once finished as the new stuff will be under (Read More). Best of luck to the run.
That was a surprising challenge. Of course the early game made you dread the idea of getting wet from all of the water types available to battle. It was a decent sized hill for one slow turtle to climb. I am not sure if giving Torkoal the quick claw sooner would help at least considering how early you get it. I think if it had Drought instead the challenge would be somewhat more difficult to manage stat drops. It is interesting to know that Torkoal doesn't get access to Solar Beam until the next generation which is a shame. The time lost was expected given you weren't sure how our slow friend tends to take its time moving about. Aside from a few bad plays there wasn't really a whole lot you could do to prepare for battle in some cases. The Rare Candy use however was solid.
I love all the different movepool adjustments against harder enemys in this one, well done! :D

They gave Lorelei and Glacia Ice Types that are also Water types because there just weren't many others to choose from.
Kanto elite four trainers are supposed to be experts in two different types.
Lorelei: ice and water
Bruno: fighting and rock
Agatha: ghost and poison
Lance: dragon and flying
@@anlev11 they are never refered to as masters of two types, only one, it’s probably a coincidence
Love the content👍🏾
Small tip: yawn has perfect accuracy (it’s not even 100% it’s just by passes it completely)
Oh interesting!
So flattered you accepted my idea!
Maybe before the year ends you could try a plusle AND minum run, together instead of versus so you can try the double battle gimmick and work with pivots?
I also thought it was Fire/Rock, I first saw it in Poképark and just assumed it was until it got Drought in gen 7 and suddenly everyone was using it online. I could have SWORN it was Fire/Rock, it looks like a stone oven 😵💫
I’ve thought it was fire rock until this very moment . Wtf I’ve played emerald like 64 times since 2006
Cool to hear about the Slaking vs Vigoroth run being planned, I can't wait!
Won't come out soon, not ready for Gen3 versus videos. But it will happen (hopefully this year).
Weather counter, and light screen counters sound neat. Great vid

Leppa Berry:
"Oh no! Anyway..."
Nice run Scott. Another great video under your belt.
I beg you guys to put battle animations on, they're soo fun to watch, I know it adds time but man they're pretty
I'm glad this was fixed in later gens for some Pokemon. But it annoyed the heck of me when a Pokemon had access to Sunny Day but couldn't learn Solarbeam
Oh Tropius is my favorite gen 3 pokemon I'm so happy to hear you want to do a run :D
One of my favorite part of all these videos is seeing back sprites of these pokemon I never used personally. Always love gen 3 content!
Torkoal did surprisingly well there, if all the water and its poor speed, I was convinced the reset counter would be into the 100's before you won (with a lot of them from the last 2 gyms and Wallace). Also love you did with a very Gen 1 moveset body slam, rest, amnesia or Gen 2 with Rest, return and curse. a very you kinda moveset. I look forward to Tropius and the upcoming Mew vids
19:00 you are exactly correct about the reason why Slaking loafed first turn! it's an interesting quirk
Torkol's shell always looks like a fresh baked pie to me.
Also omg my comment about armoldo being the venomoth of gen 3 got used in the video!
I think Torkoal is absolutely adorable, so I'm super excited for this run!
Let's go! New Scott video! Time to relax
I like the addition of the badges on the screen. There are some pokemon games where my memory of the order of things is hazy so that's a good way to know where you are in the playthrough.
I never used this mon as a kid because of how slow it is, but its wonderful to see it doing well! Scott using body slam so much over flamethrower is a bit of an oof tho lol; mainly in Glacia's fight but I noticed it earlier too, specifically ofc when curse isnt being used.
Flamethrower gets stab, has a higher base power, both moves are neutral and torcoal has balanced offenses; paralysis would be the only reason to use body slam over it but it wouldnt be important here.
I guess Scott was just understandably tired though given this run was done in December
Ooh, I love seeing game glitches like the one with Norman's Slaking!
In an old, non-pokemon game recently played, i ran into quite a few weird ones I wouldn't think exist! (A character got stuck in a 'flinch' state and wouldn't recover, despite it only supposed to last one turn and there weren't any moves causing it anymore)
Hope you keep pointing out some of these fun glitches that are lesser known.
Also, fun to see a Tank pokemon like Torkoal and the strategies needed! I been doing my own tank-based character challenges, fun having to anticipate you will be damaged before you can heal.
Swagger is a really good move for tank poke mon. If they learn it.
29:22 Kanto elite four trainers are supposed to be experts in two different types.
Lorelei: ice and water
Bruno: fighting and rock
Agatha: ghost and poison
Lance: dragon and flying
I've always loved Torkoal.
Glad to see its solo run
I am utterly, utterly shocked that the AI had the wherewithal to encore you into amnesia. I'm not even mad.
Love the content as always Scotty
Honestly, that was a smart move from Glacia - a move she will never repeat.
Your theory about Slaking is correct. Gen 3 has weird turn order where if a mon is knocked out the next one is brought out in the same turn. You can best see that in double battles where if you knock a mon out and target the same slot in the same turn you will hit the new mon in that turn. Because Linoone fainted to burn, it brought Slaking out before the next turn came, bringing Slaking out on its attacking turn. If you knocked it out by attacking and all attacks having been used in a turn, then the turn resets. The game checks for that.
I'm loving the gen 3 videos! I think doing pokemon challenges in gold vs. heartgold would be really cool!
the times might not compare perfectly but it would be cool to see the tier list changes
I can't wait to play the Johto remakes!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon my brother and I have long discussions about how the Johto remakes are the peak of old school pokemon. post both physical/special splits and its all just so amazing
Honestly that went surprisingly well. I thought Torkoal would take much longer. But if one were to do an optimised playthrough based on this video I'm certain the resets could be brought down to single digits and the time could also be decreased.
cant wait for one of my favorite mons the spheal line perhaps for walreign you could do the best of the worst as ice is viewed as a verry bad type but walreign is one of the icons for the weather gen so perhaps one with bug or grass but thats just an idea love ur vids
"So trainer, what do you nickname your Pokemon?"
"Mt. Doom."
The little mistakes in torkoals run make me excited for the day we get second playthroughs of emerald, really start seeing the optimizations
I am glad that this firely tortoise made to the end...
I actually like it!
Torkoal just needs a lovely dirt den to hide away from Hoenn rains. For now, I will provide it a umbrella! Lovely creature.
Torkoal's white smoke was paving the path to victory, especially with thr tariners that are trying to use mightyena. 😊Onter then that, Torkoal's movepool were really enough to get everything out of the way. Because having a wide range of set up moves were really useful.
I really liked the usage of sunny day, and stalling Steven out with rest, was incredible, and more of all was so satisfying to watch an easy victory against him. 😊
By the way, it eas so fitting to see you use the May character with Torkoal, because it was part of her team in the anime. I really liked Torkoal in anime, it was so adorable ☺️.
By the way I think that you'll get better in emerald as you continue to do runs. In fact I think that you are better then you were last year in it. Well done! 😁 Keep on trying to get better and better in these games , I'm rooting for you!
May didn't have Torkoal, Ash did.
@@rjante2236 yeah for odd reason I remembered that it was May's Torkoal. So thanks for letting me know. 😁
First time seeing myself in the credits! Glad to be a Patreon member.
Welcome to the credits!
Well thank you. I watched this in the gym just now and beat my personal best for a 5k thanks to the fun distraction it offered 😄
"Mr. Emerald" returns! Honestly, I agree with many of the decisions you made in this run today. Torkoal is a very difficult run, and I think you navigated the difficult points of this run very well. If you did make a mistake, you quickly learned and pointed it out.
I would like to draw attention to a large improvement you made regarding status moves. You used Smokescreen only sparingly, I don't think I ever saw you go beyond -2ACC. You also figured out when to stop using Curse and start attacking. Good! I really hope to see this continue in future playthroughs.
Speaking of future playthroughs, yes I would like to see counters for all temporary field effects, like weather and the screens. More battle information is good. I'd enjoy that addition to your content.
Glad there is improvement in my play! I also think I’m getting better at learning when certain status moves are no longer worth keeping in my moveset. I used to keep acccuracy lowering moves way too longer or teach Pokémon stat boosting moves when they will never need them (a hangover from playing a lot of gen 1).
18:55 I think you're completely correct here, if a pokemon faints mid-turn their move the replacement is sent out during the same turn. There are weird quirks from this like being able to knock out 4 pokemon in a single turn in doubles - use surf with both pokemon, if you outspeed you can knock out both enemies with the first surf, and the opponent is forced to send in 2 replacements and they will both be hit with the next surf. Also it made healing wish useless because the opponent would get a free hit off.
In gen 5 it was changed, at that point you would see surf, knock out both opponents, then the other pokemon's surf would fail, and then the opponent sends out replacements. And healing wish is actually good since the opponent makes their move before you send in the recipient.
I didn't know burn damage was actually calculated before the turn end but it's the most logical explanation so I assume that's what happened
As long as the weather counter is more accurate than my local meteorologist I am ok with it. Thanks for another fun run!
Can guarantee that it will be.
I totally thought Torkoal was Fire/Rock when I first saw it, lol. Very cute tortoise! And also that it was like, a split evolution for Slugma or something
Oh I cannot wait for Vigiroth vs Slaking that's gonna be hysterical.
The Leppa Berry strat for Lorelei was so genius I gotta give props for that. Incredibly strong play there. This run was super cool, loved the strats used here.
But real talk. Torkoal would be kind of crazy in Gen I huh. Those stats...Amnesia...Flamethrower...so much good stuff.
Not to mention, low Speed to minimize Crit chance even further than Slowbro. Though, I think Camerupt would be a beast in Gen 1 competitively. Amnesia + STABs and Explosion.
@@shadowtitanx3962 Fire is kind of a sucky type competitively in part because Burn is so underpowered compared to other statuses. It would be pretty good but I imagine would fall out of favor pretty quickly.
I should port Torkoal back to gen1 and see if it can be a fire type that performs well. Thanks for giving me that idea!
Awesome vid
I’ve seen that same Slaking oddity happen in one of FlygonHG’s videos, but I don’t remember exactly what his theory was.
Apparently this only happens if the Pokémon that comes before it dies to indirect damage like burn or poison. Maybe that takes some sort of priority over Truant to make it the first turn.
I like the toasty tortoise, nice bulky buddy.
Scott, the reason Glacia wasn't using water moves while you were setting up is because her Sealeo's don't know water moves. The only water move she has is Surf on Walrein. The Sealeos both only know two attacking moves, one normal one ice, and since you resist ice they won't use that. Though fun fact, her offensive moves are mostly just normal and ice, one Glalie has Crunch, one has Shadowball (and Explosion), and her Walrein has surf, but aside from those 3 moves all of her damage dealing moves are either normal or ice type.
Slaking vs Vigoroth!!!!! Yes please! I loved doing a Slaking run it was super strong, but because of truant, i bet itll be a significant time penalty
Torkoal is pretty underrated imo. It was a beast on my Emerald team.
Watching the overlay and seeing Torkoal's speed enter the single digits after a few curses 😂
I'm using torkoal in my current Japanese pokemon emerald playthrough and he's been soooooo damn good! I'm bringing him to the E4 lol.
Yeah. I was surprised by this turtle!
Your explanation for slaking slacking is exactly right btw, that's how gen 3 works
I couldn't find anything as to why this kill is different from a raw damage kill, no info on the turn order easily accessible
But switch ins happen immediately, in the same turn normally if there are still moves pending I think, and otherwise happen together with items and what not after every action has been taken.
The fact that linoone got healed and there technically wasn't a move yet might have mattered, science is necessary
Or it could be because the order changes with the game not ending the turn when the kill isn't done by raw damage? But that sounds silly, doubt they implemented it like that
Good Job Scott
The more time that passes since gen 3 the more I like torkoal. I had a weird prejudice against single stage Pokemon up until gen 5 or 6 most of the time. It's a really cool design.
0:47
I love how you use the phrase "really drives home the fact" right after the character is driven to their new home...
Yessss Scott has embraced the ambiguity that is Armaldo's typing! Don't let your memes be dreams, everyone.
There is no Venomoth in this game!
Wow, Torkoal was kinda decent at beating Emerald! While watching you fight the Elite Four, I wondered if maybe you could enter the Sidney fight with a moveset of Curse, Amnesia, Rest, and Flamethrower. Then after Phoebe, you could replace Flamethrower with Return so that you can set up both defensive stats in future battles, as well as have more damage output. Even with that said, I feel like you did a really good job using Torkoal. I’m excited for the Luvdisc solo, which will surely go very swimmingly 😅
That’s a nice strategy for the league! It always feels a bit counter intuitive when giving up a STAB move and I rarely do it in first playthroughs. But here I think it could have been very useful.
I can't wait to see your Mew video. That thing was legendary for all the wrong reasons. The only way I could get one was using a Game Genie, but then it wouldn't listen. Ever. It was so cool to have one, but it was only useful as an HM mule. I even called it my "Swiss Army Pocket Mew." It was just a tool. It was 100% useless in battle.
18:33 the reason Slaking was loafing around is because in gen 3, if a status defeats a pokemon, the pokemon that replaces it kinda of enters the battle in the same turn. For that reason, Slaking lost it's first turn and had to loaf around before attacking
It's a gen 3 battle mechanic kind of similar to how in double battles the pokemon gets sent in mid turn, allowing it to be KO'ed immediatly by an attack from your second pokemon
This video taught me that Torkoal is indeed NOT a rock-type. However, next time that I encounter it in a game I will surely assume it is a rock-type because what is learning.
Torkoal's a Pokémon I've been curious about using before. Love the concept of a fire tortoise, though I do have a bad habit of mistaking it for a Fire/Rock type each time. Hope he does well despite "too much water" being a genuine thing in Hoenn.
0:23 - Glad to see I'm not the only one. To be fair, it's probably a blessing that it isn't Fire/Rock.
1:16 - On a broader overall game side of things, I could see a move-set working out of Overheat as the sole Special attack and after burning through the Special Attack stat, relying on powerful Physical moves like Body Slam/Return/Sludge Bomb/Iron Tail, etc. I'm surprised it can't learn or be taught any Rock moves. I know it's not a Rock type but it still feels like Torkoal should be able to use Rock Tomb at least.
2:29 - An unexpected art piece but I do adore that Calvin has a crossed out psychic symbol on his shirt. Great personal touch!
5:41 - That's certainly a relief. It seems burning Ember and accuracy reducing Smokescreen is going to be an effective early game strategy for Torkoal. To be fair, with a healing option like Rest and defence boosts from Curse/Iron Defence, that could be an effective late-game option as well.
12:21 - I've always pronounced it "A" then "Ron." An by gosh, Mariah here loves to pull through with a slither of health. She's a sturdy gal and she doesn't even had sturdy.
17:15 - Fire beat fire here... in a showdown of Normal type Body Slam attacks. It does seem like Flannery has consistently proven a challenging opponent and I'm kind of glad to see others struggle with her as I did (though my issue came down to terrible Attract luck and a team featuring only one female).
18:53 - That theory seems plausible; I could see the coding/computer getting jumbled up with that series of events.
24:25 - I suppose if you were to ever re-do a playthrough with Torkoal, then you wouldn't go with a Special Attack increasing nature then. I felt something like this would have been pretty optimal for a defensive oriented Pokémon, though I was thinking of having something with burn or poison potential (Sludge Bomb will be the better choice for the Elite Four).
29:22 - I've rarely seen the CPU make good use out of Encore but there we go. Glad you Glacia her well deserved praise here. To think her constantly clapping starting Sealeo would be your biggest obstacle.
35:31 - Yeah, wow; really surprised as well. Glacia's Sealeo did indeed prove your toughest challenge of the Elite Four. I really didn't think Sunny Day would have been enough for Mariah to survive that Milotic Surf but she continues to be an impressive Torkoal.
Awesome comment!
reminder of ash's torkoal that cried more than anything else like a baby
What a nice gesture to use Luvdisc on Saint Cyrill's and Saint Methodius' day.
Fortunately for torkoal, Roxanne sees rock tomb as a speed control move, so it will generally only use it if you're faster than her Pokémon, so nosepass is actually likely to tackle very consistently.
Torkoal does need to get there with decent health, though. The AI actually will consider using speed-lowering attacks if you’re in KO range of them.
onen thing about heatwave is that its a spread move. so it does have it viable use. could of been an interest method for tate and lyser
On the topic of Aron since the pronunciation was mentioned, I distinctly remember the anime calling it "are on" but I also feel like I remember hearing somewhere that official material isn't entirely consistent. Either way, I usually hear it with the second syllable being pronounced as literally the word "on", probably to help distinguish it from the name Aaron.
Scott have you considered if you do get merch have different venomoths with different type design t shirts?
I love seeing your PatronDex get filled up so much. It genuinely brings me great joy that so many people love your content enough to throw money at you every month. For the video, I was surprised at how well this tanky fire turt did. I might have to reconsider my thoughts on this thing. I've never particularly liked it, but perhaps I just need to take some time to learn how to use it properly.
As a good way to show how much the typing impacts it, Torkoal has (slightly) greater defenses than Skarmory at both fronts, and also better Attack and way better Special Attack. (Not so much impact movepool-wise here since Roost didn't exist yet)
18:36 Documented in Bulbapedia. "If a Pokémon with Truant is sent out following an ally Pokémon fainting to end-of-turn damage, Truant will activate on its first attempt to move."
Torkoal is an absolute legend!
If I remember correctly, Heat Wave is multi-target. Well, at least it is in later generations
Scott, it's great to see a video on Torkoal, love this guy. It pained me to see you jump down the cliff from Lavaridge and not pick up the nugget. I'm also curious why you don't go get Sludge Bomb after getting the Balance Badge?
Sludge Bomb isn't very good offensively in this game, unless you're a poison type. It's only super effective against Grass types and there is no Grass-type major battle. Plus, Torkoal doesn't get STAB with it, so it's weaker than Return once Friendship maxes out (around lvl 40-45).
I should pickup the Nugget... didn't know it was a Nugget.
Was looking at the video details and Emerald came out almost 20 years ago, feeling very old now
When Slaking comes in after burn/leech seed damage, it comes in before the end of the turn so the next turn is Turn 2.
Nvm you go on to explain this lol. It's basically a byproduct of the old rules where dead pokemon get replaced immediately instead of at end of turn (which comes up more in double battles)
Heat Wave hits both opponents in Double Battles.
It's 95% accurate and both Solrock and Lunatone are Rock typed, thus resisting the move even if they get hit by it. Plus because Heat Wave is a special move, Light Screen cuts its damaging threshold by half until it wears off.
Heat Wave does less damage to 2 targets in a Double Battle.
It does 50% damage - the damage is spread over the two targets
A little weather counter would be really cute! Especially if it was indicated by a little castform! (you can make your own rock type form for sandstorm!)
Omg I love the castform idea. I’m going to do that!

So many cool versus videos in gen3
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Consider watching FlygonHG’s Linoone Elite 4 sweep video just before you get there.
No shame on the exclusive vids for supporters, totally understand the idea of wanting to get some more sustainable support, and the added benefit of getting to wait to reveal new games until you've learned them a bit.
Just wish I'd known it was a plan back when I dropped a few Super Thanks cause I'd've done a month or two of support instead. It'll just shift the way I share the money, so no biggie.
Anyway Torkoal was an interesting one. I was expecting decent results despite the type and stat issues, and it sort of delivered. Was that your easiest Steven fight yet? Congrats on the easy end, regardless.
Commenting for the algorithm. I love fire types!
What happened with the slacking loafing: normally when you KO a pokemon the slacking would get sent out at the start of the next turn, however in generation 3 when a pokemon faints from burn or poison the slacking gets sent out right immediately after the burn but before the turn ends,
so instead of linoon faints, turn ends, slacking comes out,
it ends being: linoon faints from burn, slacking comes out immediately, and then the turn ends. This means that slacking immediately loafs because his 'first' turn on field is actually his second turn.
This can actually affect some other things too, I believe pokemon who come in like this would take sandstorm damage and get leftover recovery if they had it.
in gen 3 there is a move re learner, it's in whatever the town where you swap the meteoriter for TM27 Return. the cost is one heart scale which is normally found under the sea but there is one in a rock to the right of Mauville city. might be another option than game corner for moves like flamethrower
You can also Thief them off of wild Luvdisc
The Scorched Slab is a reference to the Japanese Shinto Goddess Amaterasu the Sun God, as far as I'm aware.
While I'd like such a weather tracker in the screen capture's corner, that'd compromise the clarity of the footage itself, so, ah...maybe in that bit of gap between the run stats and the 'mo-- OH, _oh,_, maybe a little translucent overlay for the 'mon, so it looks like it's being rain on, sunbathing, trapped in a snowglobe...
I expect Torkoal to take to this challenge like a real tortoise.
Tortoises can’t swim.
Hey Scott, the first badge wasn't in the right place when you beat Roxanne for the first time. Just wanted to let you know
Still a great adventure :3 can't wait for the next gen 3 episode!
Yup, this has already been corrected. We just missed it in post.
I think that hidden nugget in the crater in Lavaridge was the first hidden item I ever found!
Hey Scott, been watching you for a few weeks and find the runs fun. I had a, probably boring, idea that maybe you might have the answer to. If you had a challenge against Houndoom, Starmie and Breloom who do you think would be best. They are all 2 stage evolutions, have decent stats and are dual typing. Fire-dark, water-psychic and grass-fighting. This also gives them a strength and a weakness typing to each other.
That’s a really cool triad. I need to look at their overall stats. Might be worth testing!
We gotta get this guy to 1000 patreons before next gen so he runs out of Pokemon sprites
I never thought I'd actually worry about this...
17:32 - 17:35 I spilled my drink when I heard him say that 😂
Ah yes my favorite spicy turtle 🐢🌶️
Torkoal was my go to fire type in Emerald. It's a great pokemon when you play towards its strengths, but I doubt a solo run is the right situation for it. Despite it not looking like a very threatening pokemon it has seen use in multiple VGC formats mostly as a good trick room pokemon. I suspect its final rating in the tierlist will be a 7.8/10.
When gen 3 first launched and I saw Torkoal, I legit thought that he was a Magcargo evolution. He's slow, fire and has a rock shell. But no, just another slow defensive fire type. And you haven't done an Aron/Lairon/Aggron run yet have you (sorry between you, Jrose, Gym Leader Matt, etc I cant keep track of who's done what). I'm a big fan of that family and I have a feeling those might be a bit of a struggle.
