You gotta do what is most cost effective. Guys out in southwest nebraska feed cattle all winter on just corn stocks and what ever corn is left on the ground once the corns picked.
Whether strip grazing stockpiled grass, corn, or other feed you are always better off leaving in field. We're just now seeing the silliness of processing cattle feed (cutting, gathering, hauling, drying, storing, loading, hauling, feeding) in contrast to just planting and opening a gate. We've been obsessed with yields for a thousand years and not on practicality and common sense. I'm right there. I feel stupid for how we've raised cattle on our farm when common sense solutions (not to mention easier work &less worry) was right under our noses the whole time. We've changed and it's great.
We winter 120 head on 45 acres from end of Nov till mid Feb then they are shut in to freshen up for Mar 1st calving. this practice has reduced our shit spreading by 60% and diesel usage by 50% over the winter. As long as they have water near by and shelter when storms pop up they shouldn't metabolize any faster.

Seems like a grass crop would be better but i dont know for sure.I do know bison only eat grass and the meat is great and organic. But i think bison would eat corn too.lol

I just watched a video about them using milo as winter feed seems like some good options out there

Instead of maize I would plant Sorghum. Why? 1. drought resistend 2. No cob and 3. Lower energy density.
Should swathgraze barley/oats/peas till Christmas. Way cheaper.
