- This is my new wood stove for my bush camp. It has a bbq and oven hatch. It's amazing. But before I can take it to the camp I need to make sure it's seasoned. I need to burn a long hot fire in the stove and test it out.

Where do I live?
Northern Canada.
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the CZcams training (watching) over the years.
What gear do I use?
Canon 90D camera
Rode videomicro
Sigma Art 18-35mm 1.8
Sigma Art 50mm 1.4
Canon 10-18mm stm
I do not live at the tent. I just visit whenever I can. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I believe CBC did a interview with this talented fella,
Love supporting local! Nothing better than homemade items from recycled materials!
Put 2" of sand in bottom. Will extend the life of your barrel. That guy does good work.
Agreed! I am planning bricks and hopefully can get my hands in some sand.
@@jaylegere go to lowes
Merry Christmas Jay. Glad you found your stove and supported a local Craftsman.
@@jaylegere Consider using fire bricks instead of common red bricks. Fire bricks will last longer which is a consideration since you have to haul them to the site. Check out this article. At work we cooked daily on a cheap grill and burned out the bottom until we put 2 inches of sand down. permies.com/t/46752/Fire-Bricks-Red-Bricks-Ovens#:~:text=Fire%20bricks%20is%20different%20from,resistance%20to%20damage%20from%20abrasion.
@@jaylegere Happy New Year 2021 to all!
May you have happiness, peace and health all through this new year which is given to us according to the will of God.
My biggest hope this year is that many more people will ask the Holy Spirit (the 3rd person of the trinity, God Spirit, the part of God who we all need, to reign in the Father and in the Son), to come and to invite Him in theirs heart so that He, the Holy Spirit, make them be more daring in pursuing the Word of God and to be more boastful in reaching those who are lost.
To turn away from the things of the world and from everything that is now happening in the world, to ask the Holy Spirit to give us a peace that only God (Father, Son and Spirit) can give and provide for us. Not to abide in fear, or to be deceived by all that is sown on the population of this world, by dark spiritual forces, by many other means, by the media, and by many people who are not of God and don’t reside in Him.
And finally, to shine as the light of Christ as His witness in the world, until we are united with Him in our permanent home, for this place is not our home. We all live in the world but we are not part of the world, we have been chosen and separated from the world by our Father that dwells in us. Let’s all live by example this year.
For when we live in the Spirit of God, there is no fear or worry, and peace reigns in us.
We must put our faith in Jesus Christ alone, and what He did on the cross for us, to glorify Him every day in all of our words, thoughts and actions, throughout the year, so that all who see us, can see Christ in us.
I love you, you are all in my prayers everyday.
Happy new year 2021
I went to High School with David back in the day. He is a good stove man. Great that you are supporting local aboriginal business. Also recycled products big thumbs up on this!!
The guy building these is crazy talented holy
Now that is a very well designed and built stove. The maker of them has a lot of fabrication skill and creativity to make use of scrap metal to come up with these designs. Now you'll have to start making gourmet meals out at the tent now that you have a bbq grill and oven.
Yes, I think the meals will be somewhat different going forward.
Yes I wondered if the fella making these stoves was possibly a ex oilfield or pipeline welder ..maybe got laid off or something..but trying to continue his trade ..even from on tv these units look like quality made stoves
That stove will be an awesome addition to the tent. Load it up and it'll burn all night. Be on the lookout for a nice metal container you can rig up to hang on the side of the stove so you can have hot water on demand and to help moderate the temperature in the tent. Think about how you orient the stove in the tent to leave room for such niceties.
Gorgeous knife. A real work of art that will likely become a treasured possession. Your GF must know you very well to find a gift like that. Be sure to treat her right (if you haven't figured that out already).
And finally, Happy Holidays to everyone out there who keeps up with the goings on at Jay's tent. A prosperous 2021 to us all.
You said it all better than I ever can (I've tried but meant all you said as the core of my post and I absolutely agree with you for 100% 👌
May 2021 be a Year that turns around something very nasty and bring as much happiness thats needed as soon as possible!
Happy New Year Everybody!
WOW YOU ARE GOING TO BE VERY comfortable with this NEW stove
What an awesome stove! And so great to support locals. I do the same and cringe at some prices but always justify it by the fact that they’re local businesses trying to support themselves and their unique crafts! Can’t wait to see it set up at the tent. The cooking hatch is very cool!
I had never seen a top hatch like that either! Want to see how it works cooking on top as well as inside of the hatch. It seems big enough to go eight hours if he can control the draft precisely too. His idea to line the bottom with fire brick and sand is spot on! Looks well built. A top gas exchanger chamber directed around the inset hatch and then out the flu may be an upgrade if it isn't already there.
Sand in the bottom of the stove will be a huge help you should be able to get it at Lowe's or home depot
That's a nice stove, be great to bake some biscuits for your breakfast. Yeah yummy
Hi Jay that is for sure a good looking stove. Can't wait to see you use it at the tent. Stay blessed!
Thanks Chika Chika!
That is an impressive stove. I think it is very practical. My brother in law Marc made his own pellet stove. The hopper is big enough to go to full days when full. Jay, your channel is awesome!
Thanks so much Mike.
Just discovered this channel. It was the stove that hooked me. I want one of these stoves! I look forward to the next video. Warm regards from Texas
That is a very nice looking stove. I think k you will get your money's worth out of it... I like the fact that you can load two different ways, and now that you have that reflector up and now you have this bigger stove your little shack should be toasty. Good luck with the install and get some help doing it....
Thats a fine piece of work. I bet the tent will be very warm with it. I'm sitting on pins and needles now waiting for the next video 🕺
That's such a cool stove, he is a real artistian! Looking forward to seeing at the tent!
Wow that's a bad ass stove, awesome I bet you are going to be warm
Damascus steel is made by forging layered pieces of steel together, hammering it flat, then cutting it, or folding it and forging it again. They repeat that process over and over. The process originated in Damascus (of course) but the "true" recipe has long since been lost so everything you see isn't necessarily "true" damascus steel, according to the purists. Beauty knife though.
Same sort of thing they did for making katanas in Japan. The whole process was to introduce carbon making a steel like metal. It was made obsolete when techniques to fully melt iron were invented. Still looks amazing though.
Why is this bringing me joy?!?!
I love innovation..........
Another great addition to your tent and vid Jay!
Nice looking and functioning stove! Put out lots of heat: great for the tent. Guy who built has amazing talents. That’s one big Knife👍See u at the tent...Happy New Years👍
Great purchase, I had a couple of barrel stoves years ago. One had fire bricks in the bottom and the other one didn't. The one with the bricks lasted years longer than the one that didn't.
Fire bricks are relatively cheap, the last time I bought bricks was a couple of years ago, at good old Canadian Tire. They were like 3 or 4 bucks a piece, and they last a long time.
From experience, the one without the bricks would glow red on the bottom. It needed to be sitting on a non combustible surface. I used 12X12 concrete pavers from Rona, only it was called Revelstoke Lumber back then.
But oh man when those stoves get going,........you'll be filming in your underwear dude. Lol
You're going to be nice and cosy now. Stove looks fab, can't wait to see it in action in the big tent.
Nice stove! Looks like you could a kick ass fire roaring in it!
Damascus pattern is made by forging multiple layers of metal together. Watched Forged in Fire. Makes me want to forge my own tools!
I would love a stove for Christmas
Honestly,Thats Amazing!!!
Awesome new stove
That stove is amazing what a great addition to the tent. Your cooking skills are off the chain already I’m thinking we care going to see it kicked up a notch.
Yes those 45 gallon barrels make good sources of heat when turned into wood burners. I have one that I use outside, not as refined as the one you purchased, but works good for outside gatherings in the winter. Throws off a lot of heat.
That knife is a beauty. Great tool for the channel.
Merry Christmas Jay
That knife is a work of art, and the stove will be amazing, cant wait for the next video.
AWSOME STOVE!!!!
Wish I could get one of these in Kansas. Just what I want
Thanks again Jay.
A nice buy! Happy New year
Keep em coming buddy. I’ve been watching your channel for a while now and always look forward to your new con”tent”. Best wishes for the New Year from me here in the U.K.
The stove fella must have been waiting for you! Looks awesome. Happy New Year Jay. Be well.
I just love your videos.. They are very artistically done. The sounds of a crackling fire and sizzling dinner cooking and the closeups of the flickering flames.. So.. Well.. Done!!!!!!
Good morning Jay I hope you had a good Christmas and I think you got a great Christmas present I can't wait to see you cook on your new stove make sure you keep pumping those videos out I truly enjoy them have a good New year
Amazing stove!
Glad to see that you finally found one of those cool stoves. I think the texture on the blade comes before the forging, when the metal piece is esseantially folded over many times. And that visible texture is probably from heat treatment of blade, it was probably quenched in oil to get that deep colored texture.
Also several different types of metal are welded together before folding. Iron and steel.
The texture is created during forging. The layers are created by folding over and forge welding together multiple times using borax for a flux.
That is a great stove.
Love it... Wow. Great piece definitely for the tent... 👍👍👍👍👍👍 wishing you lots of fun this year at you're tent....
Amazing new stove, Jay. Can't wait to see some delicious bbq next time. Happy new year!
Happy New year, Tanya.
Very cool stove!
Thats AWESOME stay warm...
Those are cool stoves .a guy i know tried to make one and totally messed it up lol .dont feel guilty i bought myself a fishing pole while shopping for the family lol..
Hahah. Gotta do what ya gotta do!
Awesome
The stove guy probably don't have a website does he? That smaller stove caught my eye. I live in PA, shipping would be crazy but the craftsmanship that went into his work it would be worth it. Your one video where you burnt your boots convinced me specially in those outside temps.
What an awesome stove. That guy is quite inventive.
Nice stove. Glad you had a good Christmas...
Love your videos. great stove and knife
That’s cool 👍
Hi Jay that stove will work really good in your tent. Can’t wait to see it going in the tent. Hope you had a nice Christmas and a great new year too.
Great Knife.
Solid!
Your videos are just fantastic. Keep up the amazing work. I always look forward to each and every one of them.
Thanks so much Chris. This means a lot to me. Sincerely. Jay
Now that is an very diversified stove. Good on you man.. very nice. Great video as always
Jay. Once you get it set in it’s permanent place. Pour a bag of play sand in the bottom. It will make the stove last a lot longer. Ashes are acidic and over time the thinner barrels will rust out. The sand will drastically increase the life span.
I didn’t read the comments first. Someone already mentioned it. I made an edit just to agree and affirm adding play sand. You can find it any where they sell concrete. You add it to brick mortar. In the states it’s like $3 USD a bag. $3.85 CN.
Definitely think you could make a basic hot water system in conjunction with this stove👍👍
That thing is sweet! It’d be overkill, but maybe put the old one in the truck camper?
Very cool stove
And the knife steel is called Damascus...
👋😎👍
Jay Hope that you had a merry Christmas
And to have a happy new year. I really like the stove I think that it will be a great addition to your tent like you said you can bake things in the top compartment. You have a great day 👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Beautiful stove, beautiful knife, and overall a beautiful video.
Thanks so much. Jay
good man
Great stove, Jay. The guy who makes them does a great job. Beautiful knife, too! Happy New Year.
Nice
Looks great, maybe you won't have to get up as much to add wood to the fire in the middle of the night
Merry Christmas Jay, regards from the UK
Great looking stove configuration! And yes I agree the sand and bottom lined fire brick is a good idea that you have. I was wondering if the maker built a gas exchanger cavity that directs the air flow around the inset baking compartment and then out the flu for a more efficient combustion and gas burn off? Plus that would create a more uniform heating gas chamber around the inset baking or oven chamber. Maybe if you could get an interior shot looking around his desing that would be awesome! Thank you for showing this stove!
More shots of the stove to come for sure!
@@jaylegere Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year! Thank you!
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Stay safe.
You can use the ash from your tent stove instead of sand. Always leave an inch or two in the bottom.
Avid fan here from the philippines
Awesome! Hi from Northern Canada.
Jay I like that new stove, Man you could put a beef brisket on that ,I'll help you eat it
I think that you have a Christmas present that is from heaven and worthy of the next 10 Christmas Years presents from now on! Wow! 👌😎 and I absolutely know these types of stoves, you can buy the hatches and if you are a woman/man that has there profession in metal working and indeed the knowledge of the way stoves should be build and welding is your professional job... meet the man you've met.. what a man!! He was there on the right time and place Jay! Just what a beautiful stove!
My dad was a man that had his life dedicated to work with metals and so.. yeah.. this made me teared up for a little moment.. 12 years is a long time but also can feel like yesterday that he passed away. Uhm, getting sentimental for a minute but these days can get people sentimental 😶😊
And yes, I also am fermiliair with the way Damascus steal is forced (if I say that correctly, I think so but English-language isn't my first language and writing is pretty intense sometimes 🤔😁 ) and if that is a handmade one and truly the diverse types of steal has been beaten together with the hammer by hands and not a machine (but that is no way of telling unless you know the Blacksmith who made the knife)
And I honestly couldn't even buy such a knife or even own it in my Country 👀🤔😓 what a shame isn't it?!
But then again.. I had a great dad and his family didn't came from this Country so I have had my fair share of goodies uhm.. bushcraft related candies in my childhood, not to say that they aren't around anymore 😉 😁
You are a lucky man that has a wonderful girlfriend who cares for you and your children and for what I think, the time that luck turns into your corner may just be very welcome right now and that is something I wish for everybody 🤗
I hope that everybody had a great time during Christmas and was super safe out there so we not all go even further back in 2 weeks time after the incubation period but not get ahead of it all 😊
I can't wait to see the stove in your Shack Jay 😁 yep, still have the song in my head somehow.. Grin!! 😁
Thanks for sharing your story. Sorry to hear about your dad. I know how hard that can be. I appreciate the thought you put in this comment. Untill the next video! Jay
Awesome..stove ,Matt ..wondered how you came by it ..thought you may have made it yourself..but yah great info on the fella that’s making them ..I see he’s got several different models in his truck ..pretty cool 👍👍
Love supporting local businesses which I know will last much much longer longer than the Chinese junk
Hello Jay that is an awesome wood burning stove, Happy new year Jay
Happy new year Elwood
Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year Jay
You too Doug!
Now to see that baby work..the other stove will be jealous!
What a beautiful knife.
Watch an episode of Forged in Fire and you'll see how the blade is made...
Take care 🇨🇦 🔪 ❤️
Can't wait to get it out there!
Right in the Timmies parking lot!
Ps. Your girl has great taste in knives.😉😉😉
Steel is made by mixing steel with carbon steel, mix is forgers chose , Knife is a full tang be carful with it. Do the chimmy pipes fit ???? nice stove. take care
The stove give me some ideas like using a Stirling Engine to generate electricity 🔌 for your tent ⛺
👍👍👍👍
Hi Jay, sorry been super busy, catching up now, what a great find, the stove looks awesome, especially for your size of tent. Now that knife is something else, fairplay to your girlfriend, my husband got one made, its his buddy, so i know how you feel. I'm researching a new tent for this year, have had two previously, not too your level of camping, but do love the outdoors. Happy Christmas and a happy new year.
Liked, subscribed. Looks like a cool stove. It will be interesting to see how efficient of a heater it is and how it is to cook on/in.
I remember In one of your videos where you visited another hot tenter and he had a stove similar.
Hello JAY. Fell in love with this stove. Got any measurements you would share so I can make one for camping?
Sweet stove! I wonder if the draft will be enough to keep the top hatch from leaking smoke. I couldn’t specifically tel if there was a high temp gasket around it.
Jay , you're turning your hot tent into a sauna LOL. This is great stuff my friend. Like I said before , your channel is growing leaps and bounds 👍
Look forward to long over nights at the tent. Good idea to pre burn too , its what I did to my stove for my UP-2 tent that "Survival Russia" shows on his channel. Merry Christmas and Happy Prosperous New Year my friend ✌
By the way , can I ask what that cost ?
I agree the grill area would be perfect for the rocks lol
Holy Shit that is awesome!!
Loon Lake is awesome
Oh yeah dood....
If you wrap a chain with a clip to adjust the chain
Wrap it arould a log when splitting and then you dont have to chase the fallen pieces on the ground sure there are videos on line where people do it maybe wrangler does it
Bro that is a very nice well built camp stove. Do you have a damper in your first stove pipe. If not install one. Keeps the heat in the stove. When mostly closed conserves wood. They are great I made one of these out of a 5 gallon can. It worked very well in my small 2 man tipi. Was almost to much. Just ripstop with a chimney hole in it.
There are plenty of videos on CZcams about how to make a Damascus Blade even if you want to become a amator Blacksmith !
Another awesome video! I love the new stove. Where did you get the metal sawbuck? I’d like to get one like that for use at my cabin.
