It has to be said that Jim Thome's name here seems like an anomaly to those with little more than a casual relationship to baseball. Yet here he is...
    Ruth
    Aaron
    Mays
    Bonds
    Sosa
    Rodriguez
    Griffey
    Pujols
    ...and Thome
Without a doubt, Thome is the most underrated player in this club.
    Baseball is weird that way.
    How wonderful it is...

And in baseball, once you take the performance enhancing drugs away you realize the same thing. Any record broken in recent history is suspect, and those found to have used drugs to gain an edge should have an asterisk put next to their names in the stat book.

Pretty safe to say, 600 will not be reached again, or at least for a very VERY long time. A player would have to start very young, and play until his early/mid 40s, and produce every season. 500 Homers sounds a lot easier, and we may not see that for a long time.

Two of these guys (Bonds and Sosa) are Steroid City so they don’t count on my list.
I guess Thome was clean - The HOF voters thought so.
I presume Griffey JR was clean. Never heard anything about him and he remained consistently rather
normal-looking compared to the likes of Bonds and McGwire.
A-Rod clearly did some but I’m guessing he’s going to get a pass or enough of one as compared
To Bonds and Clemens (and even they have one last shot at being voted in by the writers next year).
I’m presuming Pujols is clean (steroid-wise that is -He may well have lied about his age) because
I presume MLB has gotten better with testing and he’d be someone you’d have to test.
Ruth, Aaron and Mays all played in that now storybook time when steroids were not an option -
Like John Houseman used to say in that advertisement “They (had to) earn it!”

    • @unkledoda420
      @unkledoda420 Před 2 lety +6

Steroids were around since like the 1940's, just not as easily available. Although I don't think it's very likely, in theory Aaron and Mays could have been using. Speed was definitely a big thing during their careers. While not as much of a performance enhancer as steroids, it is still considered a PED since it increases energy and reaction time.
I've heard that Arod was introduced to and became quite close with Canseco before he even made the majors. I think he's the dirtiest of the bunch. It's likely he was using since he started, possibly Sosa too. At least with Bonds it's pretty much accepted that he didn't start using til the late 90's after McGwire and Sosa both demolished Maris' record.

Mays and Mantle admitted they used amphetamines and Pud Galvin was drinking monkey testosterone in the 1890's. Whitey Ford admitted to doctoring the ball most his career and a bunch of other cheaters are in the hall. So all that "purity of the game" crap is exactly what that is - crap.

I grew up as a 13 year old kid watching Pujols burst into the league with the Cards in 2001. People forget or dont know that he actually skipped both AA and AAA ball and went straight from A to MLB. Ironically, it was McGwire who was not clean, that encouraged La Russa to have Pujols start with us opening day.
That first year was so incredible that a lot of us thought it was a freak year. But then he continued to put up the same production for 9 more years until he left after 2011.
Lied about his age? I don't actually know enough about that to formulate an opinion. But, there has never been a doubt in my mind that he has been clean player his whole career, as well as one of the most prodigiously talented hitters ever. Anyone who says or thinks otherwise is wrong.
I dont know if he'll get to 700 home runs, my guess would be about 5 short. But decades from now, he will be regarded as one of the greatest athletes that ever lived. The same stories that my late grandpa told me about Stan Musial as a child, I will be able to tell my grandkids about Pujols.
