The irons David Graham used to win this tournament are framed on the wall inside the clubhouse of Preston Trail GC in Dallas. I've seen them with my own two eyes. Ben Hogan said this was one of the finest rounds of golf he'd ever seen played. If it's good enough for the Hawk, it's good enough for me.
I always teared up watching the opening of the US Open telecasts. The combination of Jim McKay’s monologue and Barry White’s “Love Unlimited” really stirs the emotions. I had the honor and privilege to play all four rounds here in 1981 with my best friend on the bag - Sam Irwin. Unforgettable
@@k133566 thanks Conrad. It was a wonderful moment in my golf career. I wrote a story about it in “Chicken Soup for the Golfer’s Soul”. If you can get your hands on a copy I think you’ll understand even more what it meant to my father and me…as well as my friend Sam Irwin.
i was arguing with goofballs for a year before the 2013 Open on my poker forum that pros would be lucky to get a winning number in negatives and the course didnt really have to be set up all that tricky ..... i also told them i have shot 75 on east and on another occasion was in a foursome with a top amatuer golfer who had just got knocked out of the semis in US Amatuer at The Mink that turned a -7 into a 77 after crossing the road ... true story
Peter Alliss, a most wonderous golf commentator......No one even touches him, and the fact that he has passed, means you will never see his likes again.....At least we have so many clips of his commentary over the years!!.....RIP Peter!!
merion-where jack nicklaus shot 269 in 1960 world amateur and won title by 13 strokes This score was 18 strokes below the total Ben Hogan posted while winning the U.S. Open at Merion in 1950.
I wish they wouldn't show who wins on the front page. Most of the masters I know anyway but at the same time sometimes I forget so it builds up the drama.
Just found this. Must see for an Australian golf fan.David Graham was a champion, and like Peter Thompson was self taught and not a big tall man. His game was brilliant but he wasn't the charismatic Great White Shark. It's great to see these old great names and the TV coverage for Its day was great. The British hb c commentators voice his so fam ijkiar he's st i 'll the voice of gold today!
Not as charismatic as the Great White Shark, because he had some hidden demosn in him.David Graham had to deal with his father's major disappointment in him (which was so unwarranted) because he wanted to be a golf pro. When he tells that story, he always go into tears. He so much wanted his fathers approval.
David Graham deserves significant recognition as the only Aussie to win multiple majors in the United States. Something Norman couldn’t manage despite having numerous opportunities to close the deal. Graham and Peter Thomson are the greatest male golfers Australia has produced. Norman is the greatest narcissist Australia has ever produced.
As an Aussie D Graham is too easily forgotten these days, wonderful player…I’m proud to say he is an Aussie

This old video is pure gold, thanks.

Congratulations Bill .. that's a great accomplishment.

You’re right they are the best intros ever
Very curious, given you experience, how you rate this round by David Graham in the context of final round US Open wins?
It had to be one of the best ever played. I think he hit every fairway and green in regulation which is some feat.
Unlike any golf I've seen lately this course favored smart golf over just ripping it. This golfer, David Graham was so smart, what a find.

Great moment for Australian Golf!
Thanks for this. It’s great to see these tournaments again.
Thank you Conrad

David Graham played one of the great final rounds in US Open History to win.
thanks for finally posting a whole round at the greatest course in my opinion Now lets get the entire final round broadcast of 2013 open at Merion

Jim McKay & Dave Marr

Bob Rosburg

David Graham, the oldest looking 35 year old ever.
He quit school at 14 and turned pro at 16. His father disowned him. It matured him early.
@@KS-xo3oh Dont know that he smoked. Probably just a combo of genes and endless sunscreenless days on the course

hey Conrad i love these old videos - do you have more videos I can watch that haven't been uploaded?
2:35 Barry White and the sexiest golf intro ever. _OH, BABY..._

Please add the 1984 PGA
Jim McKay R.I.P
to think that 11.4 was considered the fastest. now 13+
That's the thing that strikes me when watching old golf tournaments. They seem to really hammer those putts on the slower greens.
Thank Augusta’s switch to Bent grass (which I believe also occurred this same year in 1981) for changing green speeds and putting
If you watch Nicklaus in the interview after his 86 masters win, he mentions the speeds making it a young man's game now.
$55,000 for first place. Forty years later, Rahm takes home $2.25 million.
Just a few years back in 1974, the purse for 1st was a measly $35,000 for irwin
And the LIV players are all crying about how they had to do it to feed their starving kids.
Not true
Bullseye!
