I think that Ieyasu Tokugawa wanted to know a true intention of Spain and Portugal. Spain colonized the Philippines, so the next target might be Japan. At that time England was an arch enemy of Spain. William could provide Ieyasu with English people's perspective. So Ieyasu could figure out the true intention by comparing the perspectives of two nations, Spain and England. That is why he decided to let William to live rather than kill him as a pirate.
By the way, I read books about William Adams. It is very interesting to see English people were shocked to observe how cruelly peasants were treated. For example, they were executed without proper trial. These accounts remind me of the fact that England is the first nation who constitutes such basic human right. (I mean magna carta.) Does this mean that such basic human right has already been inherent nature of English people when William came to Japan? In England, was the right to a trial respected for even peasant class???

There was no rivalry between England and Portugal!! Stop this lie!!! England will forever be the greatest ally of Portugal. You literally know so little of history outside of England.

There absolutely was a rivalry. Portugal was part of the Iberian Union between 1580 and 1640. Basically, they were ruled by the King of Spain who in turn was on hostile terms with England and fought a long and bloody war of Independence against the Dutch.
Moreover, Blackthorne might be English but he pilots a Dutch vessel and the Dutch and Portuguese had been at war since 1598 (and would remain at war until 1663).

@@ajm6558 the portuguese people hated the union. It was the beginning of the downfall of the empire and it arised national myths that persist to this day like sebastianism. As soon as the union ended we resumed the alliance with England. There was no rivalry.
And yes, there was with the Netherlands but Adams was a privateer. Nothing to do with England.
