Dr. Peter Carmichael, Civil War Institute Gettysburg College
Join Dr. Peter Carmichael, the Fluhrer Professor of History and the Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, for this fascinating examination of the correspondence between John Pardington, an enlisted man in the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and his wife. In this revealing correspondence, the experience of the common soldier on the front lines comes to life and reveals the important connections between the battlefield and the home front.
Catch our interview, on Patreon, with Zachery Fry, about his book, “A Republic in the Ranks”, which Dr. Carmichael recommends in the lecture. We made it available to you for free and we hope against hope that you will join us as a member of our Officers’ Club, so that you may further your Gettysburg education with the hundreds of episodes available to you there. Listened to this this morning because it’s a good Monday morning thing to listen to at work. This is pure gold, I’ve never heard any other historian bring the passion to a subject as Pete did. As I was listening I admired the fact that he could read the letters without choking up. I certainly fail in that respect. This also reminded me of Desert Storm and waiting for mail call and hopefully getting a letter. Thanks Pete for humanizing the war and all of the passion you brought to history and life in general.
Great lecture. No one brings it home quite like Dr. Carmichael
Amen to that
Great lecture, thanks to Dr. Carmichael and GNMP for making this happen. Nothing like watching these on a cold winter's morning with a cup of coffee.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Matt I just wanted to echo others in complimenting you and your staff on the fine job you’re doing with the lecture series. I watch them every year that they come out and you’ve elevated them to the next level. Good work 👏
Wow, thank you! I’m glad I got the chance to do so.
Powerful in the simplicity of its telling and Dr. Carmichael’s willingness to engage so directly with what the facts of this situation were and what they meant. No attempt made to shield ourselves from what it meant to these people. Well filmed, Matt; it’s important to being able to receive the message that we are able to so focus on what is being presented. Very nice editing; congrats.
thank you, Sandra!
Dr. Carmichael great discussion! Your scarves are always on point. Great having you as a professor-Joe Hadley, Gettysburg 2021

Wow!! I just finished watching this lecture. It was soo good. Very interesting. Love Peter Carmichael.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dr Pete is the best, well done.
💯
Thanks for filming these Matt. As usual a fine job.
My pleasure!
Great episode & great follow-up questions at the end. Thank you, Matt, for all your time & effort. 👍🏻🙂🙏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent!
Thank you for making this very educational video
Our pleasure!
Medieval History is really big here in the UK. You’d definitely get a full lecture theatre ! We have so much medieval history over here and Wales has more castles than most of the UK. They’re everywhere around here ! There are at least 6 within a couple of minutes to an hours drive from my house….
I think he meant over here, it’s less popular, though, I don’t know why. I find it fascinating
I guess it's the distance. I'm the only person amongst my friends and family interested in the civil war. Visiting last year fanned those flames, but on this side of the Atlantic it needs podcasts like AG to maintain the interest. I have a large "to-read" stack of books, many of which were recommended by Matt and guest speakers. I wonder whether this passion would be as strong without the Internet?
No civil war lectures in the UK, that I'm aware of; so no audiences, large or small.
@@davidspencer6384 maybe you should open the “Addressing The Dark Ages” franchise for the network I’m putting together.
That's it. I cant stand it anymore. I'm buying a new scarf. God love Peter.
Hahaha
Wonderful job filming and editing the lecture, Matt! I really appreciate it as I’m sure others who can’t attend in person. Bravo.
Thanks so much, Laura!
Well done!!
Great lecture! You guys are killing it with the editing. Getting all artsy and stuff! Love it!
Keeps me interested. Otherwise editing two lectures a week can be mind numbing lol. Glad you like them. Thanks
That was the best NPS lecture I've ever listened to. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it’s my favorite so far. Pete has heart and it shows
If I understand correctly, Maria had five children, a few of which died. Dr. Carmichael said one was named after Lincoln... Anybody know if she named one of her boyso after her dad? If so, it would show that he was remembered for the man he wished he would have been before enlisting...
Good question. I’m sure Pete would know
