Following the success of the original R-Type, Irem went back to work and busied themselves in the creation of a sequel that they hoped would be bigger, better and more exhilarating than it's predecessor. R-Type II was released into arcades in 1989 and is certainly my favourite game in the series thanks to better graphics, a bigger selection of weapons and even more intense shooting action.
The events of this sequel take place after your exploits in the original game. Despite giving the forces of the Bydo empire a good kicking, the slimy xenomorphs are back and out for revenge. As one of Earth's finest fighter pilots, there's no peace for the wicked as you must clamber back into the cockpit and show those aliens whose boss a second time.
Fans of the original game will be right at home with this sequel since it the mechanics are very similar. The objective of the game is to survive six levels of intense action as you battle it out with wave after wave of hostile ships and all manner of bio-mechanical nasties.
The game's power-up system remains largely unchanged, except there is a bigger range of weapons and power-ups to collect. The Force armour system from the original game remains, bestowing the player's ship with a large thermo-nuclear powered barrier that acts both a shield against incoming fire, as well as a projectile that can be launched fore or aft of the ship to deal with encroaching hostiles.
Tapping the fire button shoots a small laser blast from your ship's cannons, whilst holding it down charges the "Beam" meter at the bottom of the screen, allowing for a stronger, more potent blast of energy to be fired. New to the sequel is the overcharge, an attack where the player can charge their beam weapon even further by continuing to keep the button pressed. Releasing the button once the bar has turned orange and flashes will unleash a devastating energy wave capable of destroying most smaller enemies in a single hit, as well as doing significant damage to heavier craft and bosses. The charge up time for this attack is significant and the window of opportunity to use it small, so using lower powered but more frequent attacks can often be more effective than waiting for the overcharge to fill up.
My childhood experience with the game was based on the conversion for the Commodore Amiga computer, which I thought was a really good port. However, I'd never actually played the arcade version and, as a result, failed to appreciate just how spectacularly brutal the game's difficulty can be. The opening level starts out reasonably enough, but the game is merely luring you into a false sense of security before it decides to give your puny, human reactions a thorough workout.
The real kick in the teeth comes when you (inevitably) lose a life. Not only does the game send you back to a much earlier point in the level, but it robs you of all bonus weapons and ship power-ups. You are then forced to fight through the same waves of enemies again, albeit considerably under-powered this time around. Your only hope is that you survive long enough in order to grab a few upgrades to give you a chance of surviving.
To succeed at R-Type II requires many, many hours of patience and practice to learn each of the game's stages, enemy types and movement patterns. Hostiles can appear from all directions, including from behind, so you have know exactly when and where to position yourself in order to be able to deal with the next threat. Sometimes dealing with specific boss can be quite easy, provided you know the sweet spots to stay in so as to avoid oncoming fire and not get hit.
Should you manage to defeat all six levels, you will then gain access to the "Bonus Game". This amounts to playing the game through a second time, although this time the enemies are even faster and more deadly than before. I really wouldn't recommend trying to beat this unless the machine is set to free-play...
R-Type II is still one of my favourite shooters from the era of classic arcade shooters, despite the bone-crushing difficulty. The game features some excellent graphics and artwork, with many of the enemy designs featuring strange fusions of flesh and metal that can often look like they've come out of some tentacle-laden Manga horror. There aren't many games where you're required to shoot a giant, pulsating alien embryonic fetus to save the day - something that only helps to cement itself as a true "shmup" classic.

The most brutal shooter of the 80'
Ever notice how beautifully detailed the first two to three levels in these games are. Then you get to the later stages and it looks as if the developers got lazy.
Not that lazy... Stage 5 is pretty inventive with it's moving walls. Stage 6 is a bit dull compared to the rest but I definitely wouldn't say it's lazy.
That was a pleasure to watch sir! Never have I seen anyone play like that before! I used to get my ass handed to me on a plate EVERY TIME I played and could never get pass the third boss haha. You clearly are an expert and must have played this hundreds of times, well done.
Look closer my friend. That player was was cheating.
@Elenimotoon Then, great job!

I remeber the hitbox for the ship being exraordinarily unforgiving in the arcade and even on MAME. You getting all those speed ups made me twitchy.
What’s bad is when you get those speed ups and then die. After playing Delta and Final with the speed select, it’s hard to get used to starting slow in these older games.
Well done mate!
R-Type II is a very difficult game and you beat it like a boss.
Really a great game and hard for sure... but "beat like a boss with invincible hack on lol "
R-Type II Longplay (Arcade) [60 FPS]: Blast the Bydo Empire back to the Stone Age in this classic shmup from Irem!
Read the video description for my review!
i think this game is supposed to run at 55 fps (on its original arcade monitor) since the screen refresh rate is 55 hz. This is due to the rather high vertical resolution of the game for which the monitor cannot handle 60 hz.
I came to this Channel bc I have a Problem with the Boss of Stage 2 😊😊. Maybe I get a solution here 😊👍👍
The Snes port is so hard!!!! But exciting at the same time...
Inoubliable jeu d'arcade.Génial.
R-Type II Longplay (Arcade) [60 FPS]
The final explosion is really nicely done, but I guess that's to be expected of the guys that made In the Hunt and Metal Slug :D I also like how the ships that were held by the final boss escaped on the second loop, but are destroyed in the explosion on the first loop. Anyone know why only three of the four survived? Is there a way to save them all?
Ace mate, 100% ace
Woow,,,,😔😔😔 cuanto recuerdos
What's with those other ships attached to the final boss?
they are captive ships. i think like the r-9
If youre running low on Salsa, you can mix in some RAGU and you'll never taste the difference!
Why does everyone I've seen play this hate the circle beams?
i had R-type 2 on my nintendo 64 i love it but it was very difficult to finish
The most difficult game ever.
Нет это не самая сложная аркадная и не самая сложная игра в мире есть ещё игры которые сложнее R-Type II
what are you emulating on?
I know this is old. How did 2nd boss die? Didnt seem you hit its bulb with your charged shot and it just died. It keeps killing me and I put several charged shots on its bulb.
It's not easy to see, but if you look closely, it's the centre rail beam from the 3-way shot that gets the kill. It hits the bulb, but there's insufficient health on the boss to absorb the beam, so it passed through, rather than ricocheting 🙂
Thanks. It seems I have put more damage on it than you did, but still wont die. I am playing iOS version.
Freakin wow man I doubt even the most intelligent ai computer can do better. Humans rule that's for damn sure
I had to go back to this video just to prove I wasn't crazy, in the steam rerelease of these games in level 2 the electric bullets pass through your turret even though in the original arcade they don't. wtf
Is it just me, or is this game harder than R-Type 3?
Much harder
no way...
It looks like
Just like super r type one
Why do those other 3 R9s blow up the first time you complete the game, but survive the second time?
I believe at least 1 has to survive the boss battle for them to survive. If they all die against the boss none of the make it.
Could be wrong though.
I finished this game. This is way harder compared to Gradius III
2:47 22:47 Gydocker
Let me guess the reason why Im destroying the alien core is because they about to attack earth?
1:01 weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Why the aliens that come at your back in the tunnel before the final boss don´t kill you? It´s a bug? They run almost over you!
No, it's not a bug - the player ship sprite only registers a collision on a very specific part of the ship (near the blue cockpit); it's OK for other parts of the ship to touch enemies because it doesn't count as a collision :)
ah thank you for the explanation!
Man I can't beat this fucking stage 3 boss for nun I need some help
thought this looked fishy frOm the start. too many speedups, erratic movements, unnecessary and amateurish maneuvers, and then right at 9:48, you blatantly fly through a laser from the boss. direct hit. so tHat confirms my suspicions tHat this is a TAS.
