The man in the painting is Louis Ferdinand, Prince of Prussia. He was a friend and patron of Dussek, as well as a composer in his own right who wrote 13 works (all of which have been recorded decades ago) in the style of Beethoven. Musicologist Dr. Marten Noorduin, whom I went to secondary school with, once told me that the Prince and his composer friend were also notorious for their epic drinking binges together.

This is typically the kind of classical music that i feel boring, even as a soundtrack for old movies.

He was a great friend of Mozart. M. stayed at his house outside of Prague in 1787 , where he finished Don Giovanni.

Wrong Dussek. Mozart's friend was František Xaver Dušek (1731-1799).

I would have bought this set if it had been performed on a modern concert grand. I like period instruments with regard to harpsichords and clavichords, but to my ears fortepianos sound like they are badly tuned and regulated. Tinny treble and tubby bass.

Makes me wonder if Dussek would have been of the "I have the whole piano, I'll *use* the whole piano" mindset and would stick to the fortepiano.

But a Steinway would not have been what Dussek heard.

@@lBJamiel There are two schools of thought (at least among Classical art music pianists): that of trying to imitate the nuances of the work in its initial form, and those who try to envision the work if the composer had a full perception of music thought in the present day and if he had a modern piano. The former is prevalent and I could hypothesize that this division is a derivative of Schumann and Liszt's opposing musical ideas.
