Happy New Year, Everyone. In this week's video I take this cheap and dirty lens out for a test run to see what I can get!
But is it any good?
The results were rather surprising!

I mean I know you’re good at what you do, but every video, the pictures you take, just amazes me everytime
Appreciate that mate. Now you're on Sony too, these old lenses are definitely worth a look👍
1st video I've watched of yours. And I really enjoyed it amazing photos and you come across as a decent nice happy fella. I'm a complete novice at photography and have just bought an A5000, tripod and a Pentax 50mm 2.8. I think I've managed a few decent shots and really enjoying just taking photos and playing with settings. I found your video searching for vintage wide angles to play around with and I think you may have just sold me on the Vivitar. Sub'ed!
Thanks very much. I do enjoy the vintage lenses and that Vivitar really surprised me. I still need to open it up again and fix that sticky focus ring, but it performs beautifully.
Appreciate the sub, have a great week 🖖
ANother stunning video!
Thanks very much 🙏
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Anytime mate!
Love your videos mate! Keep'em coming!
Very kind of you mate, thanks👍

Hey there, thanks for watching 😊
I really like using vintage 28mm lenses on my Lumix - with the 2x crop of the Micro four thirds cameras it gives a field of view similar to a 50mm on a full frame camera, although if I have the option, I prefer a genuine 50 (or 55 or 58). It's always amazing how much crap you can have on the front (or inside) a lens and it still shoots ok (on wider apertures) - my Chinon 55mm f1.4 has quite a bit of dirt and fungus inside - I really should get round to cleaning it but it's one of my favourite lenses and I don't want to take it out of service - maybe one day.........
Yeah, I was really surprised by how little showed up on the images. I quite like the 28mm on apsc. At 42 ish mm equivalent, it sits right in between 35 and 50. The dirt on this one doesn't bother me so much, but that sticky focus ring needs sorting out, it was a pig to get focus on those water drops 😂
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Yeah, of course, sticking focusing rings make life very difficult. If it's sticking just because the grease has gone thick and sticky, you can sometimes get away with applying a few small drops of light oil onto the focusing helicoid (assuming you can get the lens apart enough to see an end of the helicoid) and then working the lens a few times - the fresh oil can mix with the old dried grease, softening it enough so the lens works better again. This isn't the official method, but stripping the focusing helicoid completely can be a pain, you need to mark the location of all parts before removal otherwise infinity focus can go missing. Theoretically, if it is the grease causing the problem, then it should seem worse outside in the cold than it does when the lens is nice and warm inside because the grease gets stiffer when it's cold.
On the other hand, if there's something mechanical causing the focusing ring to stick, such as physical damage, then you might have to search for the part that's rubbing/catching or whatever.
@@GrumpyTim The temperature thing is worth checking. It was very cold and went below 0 as the sun dropped. Thanks for the tip, mate😊👍
Lovely and stunning images!
Could you please let me know what you used to take the macro photography?
I''m about to buy this same lens and would love to try that too.
Thanks
This was a long time ago but I’m pretty sure it was just macro extension tubes.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Thanks! I'm gonna definitely will try that with that lens as soon as I have it... Loved the pacing of the video. Have a great weekend!
@marysanchez4789 Thanks very much for. Have a great weekend too🖖
Hi, have you tried using this for Milkyway? how was it? thanks! :)
I haven’t but I intend to when the core returns to our sky next year. It’s a lens I didn’t use much after moving on from Sony,
@@DavidFlowerOfficial I see...I was planning on buying the same lens...seems interesting. Thank you!
Put your empty battery in your pocket and it will rivive a bit again. Mine did to 40 %. A few more shots, maybe your killer shot ...
I normally carry a couple of power banks with me, but in this case I just plain forgot and 4 batteries between 2 Sony cameras when I'm shooting 4k video and shooting photos doesn't usually last long. Of course the temperature didn't help matters😂
