You sir are a lifesaver! SyncToy was my favorite backup software for years out of them all. Now I switched to a new computer on windows 11 and found it's no longer available. Followed your instructions and I am back in business. Subscribed!

So frustrating. I used SyncToy for years and now I can't get it to load. It asks for that NET Framework 2, but when I download and install NET 8.0 SDK SyncToy still wont load. Any suggestions including an alternative to SyncToy?

I have only used SyncToy. Never need anything else.
It looks like Microsoft might have changed the URL on us. .NET Framework 3.5 includes 2.0. Here is a link to 3.5 for you.

I'm a little dumb......Can you confirm, w/ SyncToy, it is possible to select your C drive as the source & everything on your computer (ALL Documents, files, programs, & data) will be copied to the target external hard drive? If so, how is a total restore back to your computer done? Is a system image backup restore possible?

      That is two different things.
When you back up your files you are making a copy of the files in one location and placing them into another. So, yes, you do have a backup of the files, but not of the computer.
Your computer contains more than just files. You have Registry settings, drivers, program access, temp docs, background processes.
Think of it like a book. You can make a copy of a book by slapping it on a copier. That is the same thing as you copying your files on a computer. So yes, you have all your text and pages. But, what you do not have in the copy is the hard cover, the binding, the glue that holds it together, the dirty stain that is on the back inside cover you got when you split coffee on it three years before.
If you are wanting a restore point for your computer you need to look into a cloning software, or windows recovering options.
To create a windows restore point type in 'Restore' into your start menu and it should come up with 'Create a Restore Point'. This is basically a low level cloning tool for your computer. It will back up any drivers and what-not so in case anything happens in the future you can restore back to that point.
For something more solid (like a complete backup with files and everything) look into CloneZilla.

@@gray-technical Thank you for all that info. I'm just trying to get back to the System Image Backup option that is supposedly discontinued on Windows. I'm looking at SyncToy; but the real question is being able to Restore EVERYTHING from a backup, otherwise the backup is of no use.

So if I have folders on my desktop that I save job files in, like customer file folder and also folders in my pictures folder. would I need to have all the folders I want backed up in one location folder named ( source files ) then a folder named target in my backup drive? next question. if I am constantly making changes to the files I want to backup once a week. will they copy to the backup drive and be updated on the backup drive. example. will the most current dated files stay and the oldest be removed? I just don't want to backup todays files, then find out once done, I end up with older files on my backup drive. If that makes any sense.
