  • It’s been well-discussed but yet to be made official: The Airbus A220-500. This will be a further stretch of the A220 platform, extending beyond the A220-300. While we know models and simulations for stretched A220 variants already exist, Airbus has yet to confirm any such products will move into more serious development. Let’s look at what some analysts are expecting in the coming weeks…

    This Canadian is very proud of the A220 ( C Series ), as for a A220-500. Production and supply chain issues need to be corrected before a new version should be done. A new updated plane could be called A250. The A220 is a world class product.

      By sharing costs with Bombardier (not to mention the value Airbus associated with getting the aircraft, for free) it's not an expensive aircraft for them to build.
      Extremely profitable as well, and only infringes on the base models of the 320N which are the lowest selling models anyway.
      This aircraft is not going to take away from the 320 LR/XLR
      If airlines buy this plane over the 320, it's still airbus sales, so they win marketshare and type-certification share in customer fleets.
      Every way you slice this, Airbus comes out ahead which is why they're keen on this move

      @Annoying guy on internet the program is not profitable, yet. Because it's a brand new aircraft, and due to components shortages they can't ramp up production, produce enough, and therefore sell enough to become profitable.
      Somewhere between Bombardier and Airbus must be an agreement that Bombardier gets to recover its costs on development, which were massive. Bombardier receives an accelerated share of revenue until that time, and Airbus definitely recieves less. Either way, neither company will "make money" on this plane for years, but they get to sell and steal marketshare from Boeing, Embraer, and COMAC, and that is definitely a win.

  • @malcolm5514
    @malcolm5514 Před rokem +1

    They've literally said more than once they won't be launching it. Launching so soon in the decade will cannibalize A320neo orders more than it already is. They're also having a lot of trouble delivering stuff on time. They need to secure a second engine option before launching a new variant as the current engine is having significant issues.
    There are just so many reasons why they wouldn't launch it. Not to mention that a larger variant would compete with the MAX, something the A320neo is already perfectly capable of doing.
    I wish people would listen to them when they say perfectly reasonable, sensible things. There's no reason to speculate or read between the lines here guys. I live in the home town of the C Series, Montreal. I would love to see a larger variant but it won't happen before at least the middle of the decade.
    I've also heard customers asking for extended range, so maybe they'll work on that first.

  • @philippebarillecavalier9275

    I don't see it as cannibalizing A320 series sales. For existing A320 clients, they keep proposing the same. Why would they switch? For 737 users, if not wooed by A320, then they can try selling the A220, arguably more modern than the jurassic 737. And we know Boeing is stuck with the 737 for a very long time.

    Yeah, it is possible ... even if an "in person" version it is not made yet. So, using as model of marketing strategy ... a custom used into the auto-industry as well ... Airbus might present in Paris only a scale down version ... or just a mockup of the cabin (since the rest of the aircraft it is, pretty much, the same) in order to test - directly - customers's opinion ... & also ... to create expectation from the part of their long term customers ...
