    So you’re thinking about moving to Portland, Maine, but you're thinking, I am not familiar with this city, and I don’t know what the best neighborhoods are to live in. Should you live near the water or more inland? Are there parts of the city that are more walkable than others? Is there a better part of town for my kids and family? Well, that’s what we will talk about today in this video. 1. Portland has no need for a subway
    2. Uber is all over the state but because it has a very small and mostly older population there aren't many uber drivers out of major city areas

    As someone who lived there, for almost 3 decades, you're not appreciating the natural layout. They don't need subways, or other projects, that would waste millions of dollars, and tear up the scenery. There are Zoom busses, that run through Southern Maine. Cumberland isn't even the Portland area, you're closer to the Lewiston/Auburn area, which is known as the ghetto, of Maine...

    Believe it or not Tampa where I live is in the same boat. There’s buses and Uber/Lyft but there is no rail or subways. There’s Amtrak, but like in Portland, that would be more for going longer range than within the Tampa Bay Area. The difference is, while Portland has a small populations, the Tampa Bay Area has about 3-4 million people and everyone has to drive everywhere so there is always traffic jams and accidents. They are expanding some of the major roads around here, but by the time the projects are complete, with all the people moving here, they will need to expand them again to keep up. That’s the problem when everyone wants to move to a place.

    • @EK-cr5ht
      @EK-cr5ht Pƙed rokem +6

      No, it's not like Alaska, where you live in darkness for months! But winter is still winter anywhere in New England. It's no worse here in Southern Maine than in MA (Boston area) where I came from, really. Some winter days are freezing but blindingly sunny, some are dreary and dark, like today. A few years ago we had a 72 degree Christmas day, and people went and sat on the beaches in shorts! It's getting much more expensive to live here than it was when we bought our home, though. Our (everyone's) electricity rate just went up 49 percent. Boom, just like that. But we love Maine and wanted to live here, so we do. But no, you can't get an Uber anytime you want outside of Portland,; you do need a car unless you want to bike around the city, which plenty of people do ( but not in winter) But you sure do get a lot of beaches to pick from in the summer! :D

    I know of people who've lived in Portland, and for some vreason came away saying Portland Me is big. There's some areas that have some urban density. If it's, you, a person, need urban vibe to 'feel' normal enough. And Old town supposedly nice enough. But it's as you note, it's NOT a major urban area. If you want a genuine urban setting but are tired of Boston, though it HaS to be on the oceans edge, than, Halifax is it. Problem -.. Halifax is in Canada. It's legal for US Citizen to own houses and work in Canada and still be Us citizens. And Halifax does have good climate overall. But that's only net searches. I've never been or met anyone from there.
    I know if there was a good rail line from Boston to Manchester NH, many exiters would probably choose Manchester. But NH is too slow to back it. That line goes to Dover NH, which is cute, and history rich, and a smidge of urbanness. ( Homeless seem to like it's downtown already). So, maybe Portland will have some boomy- ness to it with Boston's exiters. Guess waiting and see might be interesting ( maybe investment worthy).

    On the point made in the first few seconds of this video: considering I come from a town SMALLER than Portland lol, I don't think I'll have a problem with the size of the city. I could see how it might be an issue for city folk coming from NYC, but THANK GOODNESS that isn't me lol I'm not a city person. Tbh on that point of size, I feel like it should be a given to consider a city's population before moving there in general. You wouldn't just up and move to the middle of cornland Nebraska on a whim as a city person lol. Any person with common sense knows to take the population into account.

    If you knew Maine history they had a trolly run from Eastern promenade to St John St. Born and raised Portland Maine and it’s being destroyed by hipsters and out of state money buying up all the property and jacking the prices up so your rent is not affordable with what you get paid by local seasonal jobs. What is worse the governor could care less lining their pockets with high state tax and highway tolls.. It’s a vortex, once your in it’s hard to get out.. Everywhere you turn there’s a catch. Yes Maine is beautiful but the politics are horrible.. I like how this guy makes it sound so glamorous with so many possibilities but you will most likely go bankrupt. So basically the point he’s making is all the locals are being pushed out so they can turn them into condos that are over priced for a lifestyle not worth proving to anyone.. Glad I moved out of Portland,Maine to Tennessee or I would most likely be another statistic on the streets in a state you can’t afford.. Enjoy the 7 months of cold while your electric bill is sky high.. Man this guy is so full of shit. It’s called a vacation land for a reason. You spend money on vacation just think what will happen when you live there and miserable because of what’s happening to the locals. I’ll be fine working one job, starting a business and affordable @ $850 a month in rent in Tennessee
 Maine is a great place to visit but I’ll never move back!! Born and raised Munjoy Hill and Federal st. I may be home sick mentally but not for a place where the lights are on and no one is home.. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I started my own small business here with $300 and I live quite comfortably without a college degree. Portland is gorgeous. The arts scene is banging. The food and bars are world class and as long as you practice reasonable street smarts it’s safe as well. I could move back to Flint and pay $900 a month but you get what you pay for. We have rent control so the price gouging is being brought under control. As long as someone doesn’t mind the long winter because Spring here is cold and damp than this is a great place to live.
