So youâre thinking about moving to Portland, Maine, but you're thinking, I am not familiar with this city, and I donât know what the best neighborhoods are to live in. Should you live near the water or more inland? Are there parts of the city that are more walkable than others? Is there a better part of town for my kids and family? Well, thatâs what we will talk about today in this video. While the question âwhatâs the best neighborhoodâ is subjective, I will go over most of the neighborhoods in Portland to help you get an idea of this fantastic city.

1. Portland has no need for a subway
2. Uber is all over the state but because it has a very small and mostly older population there aren't many uber drivers out of major city areas
portland needs trolleys, buses and commuter rail at the very least. it's insane how difficult it is to get around without a car in greater portland
*STOP WHINING ABOUT SUBWAYS AND TAKEOUT DELIVERIES AND JUST MOVE BACK TO BOSTON OR NYC ALREADY!*
Thanks for the help. Looking forward to coming up there!
As someone who lived there, for almost 3 decades, you're not appreciating the natural layout. They don't need subways, or other projects, that would waste millions of dollars, and tear up the scenery. There are Zoom busses, that run through Southern Maine. Cumberland isn't even the Portland area, you're closer to the Lewiston/Auburn area, which is known as the ghetto, of Maine...
Thanks for your feedback! Be sure to take a look at my Portland Suburbs video to better understand where Cumberland is located in relation to Portland!
czcams.com/video/zDITyWWNhpM/video.html
Unfortunately they are tearing the shit out of the scenery and are making it unaffordable
Portland is Cumberland CountyâŠ
No, youâre talking about Androscoggin County. thatâs where Lewiston/Auburn is and yes, itâs ghetto
Cumberland-Falmouth is more Portland than Lewiston.
I grew up in southern Maine. I miss the ocean and natural beauty. I just canât do the winters.
Dude cumberland is a half hour away from portland, you are put out that you cant get delivery to rural cumberland from portland?
its not a suburb, its rural, thats why people live in cumberland, to be away from the city, lay off the Xanax.
subway systems are for large cities,...why would we have subway systems? To bring you up congress street for 30 seconds?
the whole of intown can be cycled across in 10 minutes.
go back where ever it is that you came from and stop whining.
I used to live in Portland in my childhood years!!! My Sisters lives there!!! My mother used to work for the City of Portland!!!!
I Also LOVED!!! the City and the people!!! I just grew to LOVE the City and it's Atmosphere!!!!!
It's changed. A LOT
1.5x playbackspeed, thank me later.
.5x for fun
Lmaođ
Lived there got the hell out of the Cess Pool quick and for the better
Thanks for the info. I have a feeling with Portland being so small, it must be very hard to make friends, especially for older single people ? Also jobs must be very hard to find. It's a small city. I'd love to visit !
Coming from Charlotte NC. Love the light rail inner city travel.
I wish we had that here John! You think youâll miss it here?
@@theportlandreal I don't think so. It's a necessity here and cuts down on horrendous traffic (it's still awful). Portland has adequate parking most of the time and is a breeze to Uber or bike once in city limits.
We use our own vehicles, there is no reason for tracks in Portland, they were removed.. walking is a good thing..
Just found your channel! I am in the healthcare field and applied for a travel position in MMC. Any recommendations on cheapish apartments up to $1400-1500 up to 25 min drive to work? I currently reside in upstate NY.
If you hate the cold and winter, DO NOT MOVE HERE! Its miserable and freezing for 6 months.
I lived in DC and was happy to a have a functional (if poorly-maintained) Metro, and then I moved to LA, where the carless go to die. I was looking through Portland websites and I thought there was a Metro there too. I'll take functional buses above nothing, but I'm suprised to see them labeling their bus service as a Metro...
The Stagecoach stops on Fridays to go to KitteryâŠlol. đ Best wishes.
Trains or Trolleys were common before the automobile, even in smaller Towns and Cities.
First Friday sidewalk art festival, dancing at Congress Square Park, Eastern Prom, nature trails everywhere around the city, Bubba's Sulky Lounge, yea?......and the list goes on and on, but most of all the people of MAINE!!!!!!!!!!
Believe it or not Tampa where I live is in the same boat. Thereâs buses and Uber/Lyft but there is no rail or subways. Thereâs Amtrak, but like in Portland, that would be more for going longer range than within the Tampa Bay Area. The difference is, while Portland has a small populations, the Tampa Bay Area has about 3-4 million people and everyone has to drive everywhere so there is always traffic jams and accidents. They are expanding some of the major roads around here, but by the time the projects are complete, with all the people moving here, they will need to expand them again to keep up. Thatâs the problem when everyone wants to move to a place.
So glad I found your channel! My husband and I are planning on moving to Maine in the near future and wanted to know if you have any advice on finding a legitimate rental. We want to rent in the Portland suburbs to try to figure out where we would want to buy. It's hard to know whether the online apartment listings are safe to go with. Anything you could suggest to find someone that could help us find a rental would be amazing. Thank you so much!
Hi Nancy! That's awesome that you and your husband are looking to relocate to Portland! I suggest connecting directly with the property management companies instead of using something like Zillow or another large site. Feel free to schedule a call time using the link in the description to talk more 1 on 1!
@@theportlandreal we were also considering renting a house long term 6 months to a year. Any idea how we can find out about them I know a lot of Realtors don't deal with rentals? Again any advice you can give would be appreciated! Thank you again!
I've lived here my whole life and want to get out
Don't move anywhere Southern Maine it's a disaster
how is the weather, specifically the winter? i hear horror stories about it. i dont mind cold but i do mind months of no sun. are winters dreary for the most part or are there plenty of sunny days there?
No, it's not like Alaska, where you live in darkness for months! But winter is still winter anywhere in New England. It's no worse here in Southern Maine than in MA (Boston area) where I came from, really. Some winter days are freezing but blindingly sunny, some are dreary and dark, like today. A few years ago we had a 72 degree Christmas day, and people went and sat on the beaches in shorts! It's getting much more expensive to live here than it was when we bought our home, though. Our (everyone's) electricity rate just went up 49 percent. Boom, just like that. But we love Maine and wanted to live here, so we do. But no, you can't get an Uber anytime you want outside of Portland,; you do need a car unless you want to bike around the city, which plenty of people do ( but not in winter) But you sure do get a lot of beaches to pick from in the summer! :D
hope you like to shovel snow for 5 months a year
Winters are long & cold
You have got to want to live in portland, you need to adapt to the city not the other way around.
Lake region bus goes from Portland to Brighton which also covers Windham Raymond Casco Naples, Boston is way bigger there's no way Portland could have a subway.......
Our Portland public transportation is our feet mostly đđđđ you also get South Portland there's a bus that goes to Old orchard Beach there's buses that go to the Maine Mall South Portland Scarborough also Saco there's definitely plenty of public there's even buses that run you to Cape Elizabeth area more limited on most of these areas on the amount of buses but they still run more than just a few areas plus you have Concord bus that brings you all the way up to Bangor and all the way down to Boston
Just went to Portland for first time. Was surprised at the addicts on the street. Definitely a lot different than say NYC. Itâs a normal city. Very safe too.
The addicts congregate by the art museum. I parked in that nearby lot and they key jobbed my rental car. I had a damage waiver but what if I owned the vehicle? Some city.
It WAS a normal, and then all the yuppies moved here, pushed out the locals, and brought their political BS with them.
đđđ Dirty Lew is safe to but they just had a mass shooting
I know of people who've lived in Portland, and for some vreason came away saying Portland Me is big. There's some areas that have some urban density. If it's, you, a person, need urban vibe to 'feel' normal enough. And Old town supposedly nice enough. But it's as you note, it's NOT a major urban area. If you want a genuine urban setting but are tired of Boston, though it HaS to be on the oceans edge, than, Halifax is it. Problem -.. Halifax is in Canada. It's legal for US Citizen to own houses and work in Canada and still be Us citizens. And Halifax does have good climate overall. But that's only net searches. I've never been or met anyone from there.
I know if there was a good rail line from Boston to Manchester NH, many exiters would probably choose Manchester. But NH is too slow to back it. That line goes to Dover NH, which is cute, and history rich, and a smidge of urbanness. ( Homeless seem to like it's downtown already). So, maybe Portland will have some boomy- ness to it with Boston's exiters. Guess waiting and see might be interesting ( maybe investment worthy).
No need for a subway. & imo The best way to Boston would be the bus. It makes several trips daily.
On the point made in the first few seconds of this video: considering I come from a town SMALLER than Portland lol, I don't think I'll have a problem with the size of the city. I could see how it might be an issue for city folk coming from NYC, but THANK GOODNESS that isn't me lol I'm not a city person. Tbh on that point of size, I feel like it should be a given to consider a city's population before moving there in general. You wouldn't just up and move to the middle of cornland Nebraska on a whim as a city person lol. Any person with common sense knows to take the population into account.
Iâm considering a move to portland maine or the greater area, I would be most likely working from home or a hybrid position.
My job greatly relies on internet speed and connectivity. Whatâs the speed and reliability looking like?
Follow up question Iâm from Florida where we arenât allowed to grow our medical marijuana and I was wondering if you had any info on renters and being allowed to grow.
Only transit system in Florida thatâs worth anything is tri rail
420 rentals are available... in Portland no yard to speak of to grow...in maine we are legal for recreational and medical...
Weed is legal in Maine bro
@@bigjimmy6956 Iâm just wondering the general willingness of renters to allow patients to grow their own medicine
Reason number 1 not to move here: we dont want you or anymore people to move here.
Honest. Yes!!
#1 stay in boston and new york
đ
Looking at moving there from Denver. Iâm tired of the crazy big city life. Went to visit during Memorial Day weekend and fell madly in love. Very happy with a quiet and calm area. Donât think public transportation should be a big deal unless itâs well set up. The only place Iâve lived that has superb public transportation with bus and rails is Utah, funny enough.
Dont. We don't want more liberals
@@EDKKPR im republican. Came for a job. No money or title will make me move back once I leave. Denver is đ€ź đ€ą
@@AlexZ-lc6nl I'm sorry I didn't know. Please forgive me
@@EDKKPR itâs alright man. If your in UT, ID, AZ or any land full of free country men, youâre lucky. I enjoy my time visiting family in Utah, AZ and Idaho. People have common sense, they actually respect the law and thank police.
LOVE PORTLAND MAINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whatâs your favorite thing(s) that you love about it?!
I joined the us army to escape Maine in 1985 never looked back. Cold September through April. Two weeks of summer when all the Canadians invade the beaches. Rude people and expensive đ€·ââïž
Rude? Come down here to NY. We reinvented the word ârudeâ! Lol!
ya that freezing cold 60 degree september weather.
If you knew Maine history they had a trolly run from Eastern promenade to St John St. Born and raised Portland Maine and itâs being destroyed by hipsters and out of state money buying up all the property and jacking the prices up so your rent is not affordable with what you get paid by local seasonal jobs. What is worse the governor could care less lining their pockets with high state tax and highway tolls.. Itâs a vortex, once your in itâs hard to get out.. Everywhere you turn thereâs a catch. Yes Maine is beautiful but the politics are horrible.. I like how this guy makes it sound so glamorous with so many possibilities but you will most likely go bankrupt. So basically the point heâs making is all the locals are being pushed out so they can turn them into condos that are over priced for a lifestyle not worth proving to anyone.. Glad I moved out of Portland,Maine to Tennessee or I would most likely be another statistic on the streets in a state you canât afford.. Enjoy the 7 months of cold while your electric bill is sky high.. Man this guy is so full of shit. Itâs called a vacation land for a reason. You spend money on vacation just think what will happen when you live there and miserable because of whatâs happening to the locals. Iâll be fine working one job, starting a business and affordable @ $850 a month in rent in Tennessee⊠Maine is a great place to visit but Iâll never move back!! Born and raised Munjoy Hill and Federal st. I may be home sick mentally but not for a place where the lights are on and no one is home.. Donât say I didnât warn you.
Wow. Show us on the doll where Portland, Maine hurt you đ I moved here from Flint, Michigan 26 years ago and you couldnât pay me to leave. I started my own small business here with $300 and I live quite comfortably without a college degree. Portland is gorgeous. The arts scene is banging. The food and bars are world class and as long as you practice reasonable street smarts itâs safe as well. I could move back to Flint and pay $900 a month but you get what you pay for. We have rent control so the price gouging is being brought under control. As long as someone doesnât mind the long winter because Spring here is cold and damp than this is a great place to live. Have fun in Tennessee. More room for the rest of us. đ
@@Lunchladydoyle good for you and all your Democratic Liberal bullshit.. I know tons of families who were pushed out and itâs just a matter of time before you will be too.. Goodluck
semi informal. Nobody makes videos for the unskilled workers, low to low-mid wage earners. reasonablly affordable Rentals for them and where they're located close to city transportation for them since the majority of them dont drive vehicles. Nobody makes videos for them. Its always just videos for the middle class and rich
Wow after listening to you
I will not move to Portland thank you
You don't wanna now it turned into a cess pool w homeless, drug addicts and illegals living in your yard
Snoozfest
#1 Portland isn't "really" Maine.:) #2 It's also a small town as cities go. #3 You have to go a ways North of Bangor to be in "Maine" :)> #4 In Portland they roll up the sidewalks in September after the tourists go home. #5 The "real Maine" is only an hour or so away up North NE.
It's full of drug users, drug paraphernalia on the ground even in the nicer streets, crime is crazy. I grew up here, don't come here. Go outside of Portland into greater Portland. The transportation and parking here are costly and insane.
since when is the crime crazy?
