I made a 16 brick rocket stove after a hurricane and made 3 meals a day for 6 people and we had only gathered a 5 gallon bucket full of sticks and bark before the rains started. Power was out 6 days!
That's amazing. I teach my son survival skills (he's 14) bc you never know what can happen. I want my family ready for anything. Knowledge is key. This year is all about shelter and cooking. So this will definitely be something he learns to build. We live in an urban environment but nestled in the mountains so we still fish and hunt and are in the woods often. He will breathin how to do this in our back yard so he can know how to find the materials needed in the city. Thank you An Gar for helping our fellow people throughout that storm.
Our ancestors have used this technique for years (I'm from India) however we still use it in urban areas during short tours or picnics and the intresting fact we use more lucrative ways (we wrap it up with clay paste for extra thermal conductivity) of this earthen stoves to cook regular dishes we usually eat... @@willwen6600 if you are cooking in a container that doesn't let the smoke get to the food then yes, almost any type of wood is okay. However, there are woods that give off toxic smoke. I live in Australia and I remember a tragedy years ago. People used Oleander prunings. Just from breathing in the smoke, an old man died and the others ended up in hospital. A 6-month's pregnant lady amongst them, lost her baby. Very sad.
I love your wife, I can imagine her giving me a warm bowl of soup and telling me its really not so bad and we'll all get through this if we just help each other.
Greetings! I came across this video by accident and just loved it. If this pandemic has shown us anything it's that we cannot go back to the way we were living before...My family is from Venezuela. One of the richest and most progressive countries in South America and look at us now. Due to government indiference and incompetence we no longer have reliable power, gasoline, city water nor domestic gas. So this video was great. We can cook with twigs! Love it!
Hi dear people, greetings from Amsterdam, Holland. I knew about the rocket stove and now I know how to build one.I am sure it will be safe enough to place it upon my large balcony without setting the building on fire.I sent the video on to my friends in S. Africa who could benefit as well. Thanks a lot and Bless you. Karin
You simply HAVE TO buy a traditional 3 legged South African "potjie" pot - used for outdoor cooking over an open fire. A small sized one would be perfect for this stove.
This is awesome! I'm laughing at all the people in my life over the years who thought I was a freak because I learnt bush survival craft and skills like this. I'm a university graduate and I've always had a hard-working soldier attitude all my life. And I've also worked on the corporate world and have been an independent woman all my life. Now everyone who laughed at me is contacting me and actually apologising because this is the way of the world that we live in now especially during this pandemic.
COMPLETELY agree! Turned off cable last year, best decision ever. Not to mention a savings of almost $200 a month for something I do not miss . . . in the slightest.
I accidentally found this video and had not even heard of this stove, but I was super impressed with the step by step instructions and the recipe sounds yummy too, it made me feel hungry. Loving couple too
My husband passed away 1 year ago yesterday and he was always the bulldog when it came to campfires. Now , with your knowledge, I can create a lovely stove for myself without the bull work...thank you.
I love how the couple in the video was warm, kind, and genuine tho each other. They were both really down to Earth. Even though the lovely lady was nervous, she REALLY did a wonderful job explaining the recipe and by keeping it simple, and taking her time allowed me to follow along, unlike other cooking shows that just breeze on by. This video has strengthened confidence in myself to know that I can potentially cook with a stove made of bricks, a piece of paper, and everything else that you need for the emergency fire could be found in ten minutes. I also picked up on how Bio conscious the gentlemen in the video was energy conscious and only used a handful of twigs, only what he needed. I liked and subscribed today. This was my first video of yours and it certainly will not be my last.
@@kristinabliss I agree but the unfortunate part is that in a widespread disaster there will be quite a few thugs going around looking for anything and everything they can take from people.
I LOVE this!!!!!!! I'll bet that even when your soup is finished, the residual heat from the stove could be great for rising dough for bread. Some old fashioned Southern style hot water bread with butter would top this beautiful chicken dish off like a champ!
Cleaning the ashes out will need a shallow flat scoop or dismantling the thing, (which is easy enough.) Maybe leaving a trayin there, so when you are done, just pull it out. I went and built one of these using an old 7" saw blade as a ledge for the sticks, (I pinched it between the blocks). That way, you need only 23 blocks if you don't need any for the kettle stand. I also I put it on a small table I had around the house, so the dog isn't tempted, and I don't have to squat. Thanks, I've been wanting to make one "forever," and yours looked so easy, I finally got mine made. Thanks!
I remember doing that on girl scout camping trips. Later as an adult too. I've been trying to remember the simple Spanish rice recipe that went in the pot.
Thanks to you both, my husband is blind, so he really appreciates your descriptions of things so that he can visualize them. So thanks again and God Bless you both!
Excellent vid, thank you. You'll get a very similar experience using a Dakota fire pit (often called a Dakota fire hole), if you are travelling I recommend the Dakota method; no need to carry any bricks, leaving space and weight for other essentials. If staying long term in situ, or making a semi-permanent camp, I would use your brick rocket stove because it has a sturdier cooking area, requires less calories to set up (no need to dig and can be kept long-term) and provides more effective cover from rain. Keep a spot of fatwood on hand for more difficult weather conditions and you are golden. A quick side-note, much of your early smoke is not from the paper; even when seemingly dry or mostly dry, pine litter (the needles) holds moisture due to the large overall surface area - it causes a lot of the white smoke. You might also consider using a little char-cloth, crushed charcoal or fatwood (never cook until your fatwood is completely consumed) instead of paper in an extended survival scenario; it's very sad to have to start burning books.
i am going to do this thanks for the idea , i have lost my job because of virus and cannot pay electricity at the moment so we will cook like this as long as we have to

Semi retiring to my own place with a plot of land here in Wales for a simpler way of life. Looking at creating an outside kitchen and your video has just solved my 'how'... 2 of those on a brick plinth would provide all the cooking surfaces I require, great simple video thank you.
This is one of the best instructional videos I've ever watched. Building this stove could save a life during an emergency, at the very least it will keep you warm and dry and allow you to boil water....I'm blown away. With all the extreme weather and storms we have now in North America, people should keep the supplies needed on hand. I'm going to make one and keep branches on hand just in case our power goes off. Every time I prune back a bush or tree I can stack up branches and twigs to keep in a dry place. My dad would've liked this video, he was an outdoorsman for many years before he passed away, and likely made a stove like this when he was out in the bush. Thank you so much for sharing how to make the rocket stove. 🌻
Thanks for the informative display. :-) Sure, it's an alternative way of cooking. But above all, I liked your wife's sober smile. It has a cooling effect.

Hope you folks are still looking at the commits for this video, because it is the best description of small rocket stove I have found. I could have really used this info a few days ago when pacific gas and electric had everyone's electricity cut off for four days. Anyway, keep on prepping for the worst, and praying for the best. Peace.

It’s 11:11pm here, or else I’d be heading to my local home improvement store. Thank you for teaching about splitting the brick, that is something I would have never figured out on my own. I do have enough smaller landscaping bricks I could use in a pinch, considering it’s almost 1/20/21 and this is the first time I’ve ever felt close to a SHTF scenario. I ordered a propane stove, with the small propane bottles for a spare/backup plan, but when I went to pick up my WM order, mysteriously they had been omitted, and refunded claiming they were sold out. 🤔 it’s ok, I can build this rocket stove and we have enough of the things we need until we reach our bug out location. Who knew watching these videos while convalescing in bed not so long ago would prove to be so instrumental now. Grateful for your channel, and I am anxious to receive my first Thrive life order!
Maybe a good idea to wear protective glasses when splitting the bricks or anything else to protect our precious eyes! Love this great couple & learning valuable basic ways to survive hard times!
Our government should be teaching this to us but they won't. That should tell you something. The gov should also provide us with bunkers and emp shields. My opinion.
You've all had access to the same information everyone else has, sad part is people just now looking into prepping used to look at people like us as "Nut Jobs" or laughing at us saying we are wasting our money and time. Now everyone realizes how smart it is to have provisions just in case.
Your rocket stove is the best design I've seen, and the only one that has two DIFFERENT portals, one for adding wood and the second as the air intake. That's a superior design.
Thank you. I tried it with one opening like everyone else does. It just didn't breath well, and I couldn't keep it burning well, so the second air opening just made sense to me. I tried it, and it worked like a charm!
Yeah it's definitely an easy setup. Permaculture rocks! Some people make feed tubes, so you can literally get it piping hot, and then start putting much larger pieces of wood into it, standing straight up, and because it burns side-ways, you can literally walk away and let it burn the large block of wood without worrying about whether it will go out or not. This is truly a technology that exceeds all the store-bought products and conventional oven-based technology. People turn these stoves into advanced heating apparatuses by adding a Mass along the exiting pipe in order to soak up the heat and not waste any out of the exhaust. They become so efficient that all that exits the pipe is a light steam. There are other changes to what is made in this video which require a bit more preparation and more bricks or other material such as a drum or barrell, and in doing so they can actually create a fire-vortex inside the drum/barrell that burns and reburns even the very ashe that would normally leave the exhaust. The stove shown here is really simple and easy to do as they've shown. Permaculture technology is amazing. Thanks for the video and instructional, it will certainly help many people to do it themselves and get away from consumer marketing programs that sell cheap throw-away products, most of which aren't even made in America. Permies.com is another great resource. All permacaulture technology and discussions. Thanks again for the video.
Everything that you say is true. But most of it is a permanent situation. The beauty of this little stove is that it is a quick and easy solution for emergency cooking situations.
I have to say I made this darling little stove & tweeked just a couple things & turned it into the cutest zen stove for my patio. I bought one 16" x 16" base slab & set it on four cobble stones under each corner. Then instead of cutting a brick in half, I left the bricks whole & placed them so they protrude out. It added dimension to the zen design & I can set salt & pepper shakers on them if I need to. Before I added the top layer of bricks, I cut and placed a thin metal screen over the chimney then placed the last 4 bricks on an angle & closer together to decrease the chimney hole size. It makes it look like a decorative cap. When I don't need to use it as a cook stove, I set a candle holder on the screen part for ambience in the evenings. I have also set a battery operated color changing candle in the top for ambience. It's close to my water fountain & I love it so much! Thank you for sharing this great "how-to" video. If was so simple and so inexpensive!

Perfect for emergencies, of course! But it's also useful for cooking like fish, collards or any kind of smelly food that you don't wish to cook indoors. Not to mention energy efficient! This is a must have.....
I just watched this video again as today, I was able to get some bricks from the local landscaping center, and started making a rocket stove for my patio. I couldn’t quite recall the placement of the air vent, which is why I watched it again. Now tomorrow, I can finish up the stove, and put the vent in the right spot. Then I can build a fire to see how it works. I want to be prepared in case our power ever goes out for an extended period of time like it did two summers ago when our town had a wind storm and we didn’t have power for five days. Thank you for making this video!
awesome it worked. never had so much fun for 2 euro's. The bricks were donated, the pan purchased in a second hand shop and the wood was for free. My husband is complaining though. He says I'm weird, not liking make-up and shopping.... thanks for this video ! ;-)

Great instructional video...I feel totally confident I could do this as a 62 year old woman. Also I coat the bottoms of pans that are used over the fire with dish soap that I let dry and then the soot just wipes right off : )
I spent a year and a half homeless in a tent in the woods behind a bad landlord with my now ex. He was the propane master for our camping cook stove that we rarely used. I was the pyromaniac who managed setting up the improvised fire pit, gathering wood and kindling, and cooking with the campfire. Something like this would have been great. I had to use mini bbq grills, or put a suspended grate over a peice of metal for the firepit. I'm in tx, and putting the fire directly on the ground is a good way to burn a hole in the ground and possibly set the woods on fire. So, a rocket stove as long as it's not in contact with the ground could work. I'm not homeless now, but with covid and the Feb ice storm that hit and almost caused a state wide electrical blackout, I'm almost in full doomsday prepper mode. I'm making my own emergency rations, preserving food, setting up my own mostly off grid laundry set up, learning how to make soap, and learning how to clean and dress wild game as well as dehydrate the meat in the feild. I still want to learn to forage for wild medicinal and edible plants so I can be more self sufficient in case distribution and supply lines implode. And I agree soups and porridge are a life saver when you don't have much to work with. I'm on fixed income and food stamps, and for almost 2 months my food stamps were cut off between mailbox probs and covid regs. I had no money to buy food, and fresh food was low. My stockpile including pemmican (home made by me) and fermented veggies allowed me to have lots of soups and porridge to live off of. I will say I almost got burnt out on that though
Totally cool, girl! Gosh, DO share with me some of the (safe) links (or, easy enough to understand BOOKS) of how/where to learn those things, too! Those kinda things are just too fab NOT to learn & know!
@@flashlitestriker4028 CZcams has loads of videos on stuff, ive got a hard tack recipe down, and pemmican. I did a variation of those from recipes found on the townsends podcast. The porridge recipe I used is a offshoot of a porridge recipe found there that uses sourdough bread instead of grains to make it. I ferment lots of veggies for food preservation. I haven't gotten making bouillon or portable broth or aged cheese yet. I've got down making butter sour cream and yogurt. I'm focusing on making tortillas, fish sauce, and fermented lemons next. I finally got a chance to try making barbacoa, and it came out good. I've got loafs of things I'm still tweaking to get right, and things I still want to try. I've almost gotten home made spreadable butter right. I've gotten good at making fried rice and kimchi. I make my own vinigars too. Feel free to message me if you're interested in tips. I've got a reddit acct I post on sometimes under Missy5454. I'm not afraid to help and teach if I can. I made a 16 brick rocket stove after a hurricane and made 3 meals a day for 6 people and we had only gathered a 5 gallon bucket full of sticks and bark before the rains started. Power was out 6 days!
Very cool
That's amazing. I teach my son survival skills (he's 14) bc you never know what can happen. I want my family ready for anything. Knowledge is key. This year is all about shelter and cooking. So this will definitely be something he learns to build. We live in an urban environment but nestled in the mountains so we still fish and hunt and are in the woods often. He will breathin how to do this in our back yard so he can know how to find the materials needed in the city. Thank you An Gar for helping our fellow people throughout that storm.
Wow, that's great.
Amazing. Your skills kept people good and fed. I'm sure others weren't so fortunate. We all need to have these kinds of skills.

@@willwen6600 Wood is wood.
@@willwen6600 if you are cooking in a container that doesn't let the smoke get to the food then yes, almost any type of wood is okay. However, there are woods that give off toxic smoke. This video has strengthened confidence in myself to know that I can potentially cook with a stove made of bricks, a piece of paper, and everything else that you need for the emergency fire could be found in ten minutes. I made my own Rocket Stove following your directions for a mere $9.25! Thank you!
I have all I need in my yard lol Know just to build it
I am going to make my rocket stove in my rural home this week .. This is good
Cleaning the ashes out will need a shallow flat scoop or dismantling the thing, (which is easy enough.) Maybe leaving a trayin there, so when you are done, just pull it out. Thanks!
The tray is an excellent idea! Thanks for the 'heads-up'.
I learned a nice 'trick' for the soot, wipe the outside of your cookware with dish soap, it will get very dark with soot but cleans up real easy.
I remember doing that on girl scout camping trips. Later as an adult too. I've been trying to remember the simple Spanish rice recipe that went in the pot.
A bar of Ivory soap was what worked best and it works! SO happy I was a Girl Scout.
Yep, did that in Boy Scouts several decades ago. I haven't seen it mentioned now that my son is in scouts.
You can rub it with bar soap too.
Mud works too.
Thanks to you both, my husband is blind, so he really appreciates your descriptions of things so that he can visualize them. So thanks again and God Bless you both!
This IS rocket science.
Thanks
What a lovely couple. I just got caught up for the love they have for each other . Thanks for the rocket stove awesome

Our government should be teaching this to us but they won't. That should tell you something. The gov should also provide us with bunkers and emp shields. My opinion.

So glad I found this channel given the worries we are facing these days Love that little stove idea! Thank you!

I'm not a expert though, just got waaay too much time on my hands with covid and decided to be productive with it by learning and experimenting

Even today in Indian Village People are using this for their daily needs.☺
Hey
In 1965 Our boyscout leader had us make adobe bricks, stacked them in a like fashion and lit it. The "bricks "cured" with the fire. He called it an up-draft fire stove. Your video rekindled (no pun intended) that great memory.
It's interesting to see the knowledge we were taught in firefighter academy used to create a super-efficient stove. Fire is an incredible tool or a formidable foe.
This just popped up in my video list and I am so grateful! We may need this emergency cooking method sooner than we think. Thankyou! 😊
