- Installation of our GMRS base station antenna is complete. But, not without help from some viewers. Our Ed Fong dual band antenna is built, weather sealed and installed on the J pole. Early testing shows great performance with low SWR levels.

Amalgamating tape alternative: Look at the AVDEC products. I used these products to make waterproof gaskets/joins in my wiring in the USAF on lots and lots and lots of antennas, feed-thrus, and joins. It isn't cheap, but it is absolutely top-notch and it can survive military aircraft in-flight duty. ;)
That tape That you used is also called coax seal. It works great for waterproofing, but it doesn't handle uv well. I was told a long time ago to go over it with electrical tape for uv protection
Thanks for the comment. I didn't show it on the video but I did over wrap it with electrical tape. Hopefully it holds up.
I was told that when you use amagamation tape you should start by putting everythign together, wrap from the bottom up and then back down. This is supposed to help ensure there are no areas where water can pool. I also use white electrical tape to protect from UV. White so when it does start to crack you can see black through it so you know its time to refresh the tape. I also found UV protective heat shrink tubes work really well as an outer shell too. Just be careful to not overheat the amalgamting tape as it does not handle high temps well. Im sure there are other experts here who know more than me. Just my two cents.
I appreciate this information. Thank you!!! I never used it before so this is helpful.
I do the same with the string and the water sealing. It might not be needed, but it sure doesn't hurt to include it.
That how I felt when I read the comments. Thanks for commenting.
Very helpful, thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Happy you enjoyed the video.
FYI, amalgamating tape is also sold under a couple of other names. Some manufacturers call it 'Fusion Tape' and ham radio dealers sell it under the name of 'Coax Seal'. It's all the same thing. Once installed, it MUST be covered with a layer of electrical tape. Amalgamating tape is water proof, but it's not very weather proof. UV radiation in sunlight will destroy it over time. A layer of electrical tape will protect it from UV rays and it will last for years.
Thank you for the information. I actually did wrap it with tape but took that out of the video because watching someone wrap tape is a bit boring. However, I did it not know this so thank you for the help.
Just starting out with GMRS in Manchester NH. Have 3 tidradio TD-H3 1 HAM 2 GMRS. Need to see if my landlord will allow a base antenna. I did think of using a mobile antenna in my apartment as well.
This Ed Fong antenna is great because it does not need a ground plane. You could attach it to a balcony railing and it would work well
Why not just glue the end caps on with PVC glue?
Seems logical right? But it says specifically in the instructions that if you glue the cap it voids warranty.
I have flex tape. Think that'll be effective?
I don't see why not. There is a link in the video description for the tape I used. Check it out maybe it similar to flex tape.
Algamentation tape 😅
I thought I as saying write and then when I edited it I was like duh. Oh well it gives people something to laugh at.
