  • Guillows RC Conversion Motor & Electronics
    In this video I'll discuss my recommendations for Guillows RC conversion motor and electronics. I'll offer detailed information on what works to power and control the six Guillow model airplane kits that I have converted to RC flight.
    There is a wide range of Guillows motor and electronics than can be used in these conversions. For the smaller models, weight is critical. For the larger models, you can use regular RC components.
    Guillows model airplane kits made wonderful RC models if you follow a few careful steps, discussed in the video. I will also highlight my RC conversion of the Guillows Aeronca, Zero and F6F Hellcat.

    Thank you Tim for such great info. Us old gas guys still have trouble converting planes to electric. You’ve given me a great starting point to go with.

    I just completed the Guillows SBD kit. I went with the Park 370 and electronics you recommended. I covered it with tissue and clear coated it. I haven't flown it yet because I lost the canopy but I ordered a replacement. Its light and strong. I just started the Hellcat and I'll use the same running gear. Thank you for making great videos.

    Tim. Thank you for these great videos, they are very helpful and informative. I tried to follow your example and do an rc conversion on a guillow javelin twice the first one I got tired of waiting for the electronics to arrive so I tried hooking up the battery and it flew out of sight. The second one I was trying to install the receiver and the plane crumbled. I'm not sure if I want to try another one because I've tried 11 models and it was the same. If I do, should I try another javelin or something else?

      George: Maybe try another project . . . Guillows kits can be tricky. www.StevensAero.com has some fantastic smaller flyers that go together just great. Tim

    Hey Tim, Great video as always! I have always wondered the what is best way to hinge the ailerons on these? Some people swear by the micro hinges, other people swear by tape (like du-bro hinge tape). The tape you used seemed to work well. Does it hold up long term?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  Před 3 lety

      Dan: I use regular clear Scotch tape. Practically invisible, seals to iron on covering very well. Seems to last! Tim

    how does the Talon 15-Amp 17V ESC w/8-Amp BEC handle the Thunder Power 325mAh 2-Cell/2S 7.4V Rampage Series 70C LiPo even though the average current of the battery is 22.75?

      Prod: To be honest with you, I really do not go into the level of technical research. Above my mental capabilities. 😁 I experiment a bit, and have found the Talon 15 seems to work well with a variety of 2 cell lipo packs if I keep flight times under five minutes of so. Tim

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  Před 3 lety +1

      900 Series kits are possible, but there are small models, you will need super light electronics. Tim

    Does the 16.5 inch hell cat make a good RC conversion or is it to small?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  Před 2 lety +1

      Stephen: In my book, model is just too small for a good RC conversion. Tim

    6.4 ounces for the smaller p40 warhawk is too nuch right? What motor could make that fly?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  Před 2 lety +1

      John: 6.4 ounces is asking a lot for the P-40 . . . do keep your speed up! Not sure on the electric motor, perhaps check www.HorizonHobby.com and look for the smaller E-flite park motors. Tim

    What covering do you use? Thank you

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  Před 2 lety +1

      Daniel: I use any of the lightweight iron-on coverings. These usually have the word "Lite" in then, such as ParkLite or AeroLite. Horizon Hobby or www.StevensAero.com usually carry these. Tim

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  Před 3 lety +1

      Sudha: While I cannot vouch for your local shopping area, here in the US various home building supply and art supply stores have a range of foam products (building insulation, for example) that can be adapted to RC flight. An amount of rigidity/stiffness and light weight are the key items. Tim
