  • In this episode, we take a closer inspection of what could have caused the potential overheating issue encountered off the cost of Mexico. We learn a few new things about our fresh water cooled Yanmar 2GM20F and take care of a couple of maintenance items. Also, something is amiss with the prop..... Problem solved?

You gave really good info on how to react to issues with a vessel.

Thanks. I learn something every time I go out.

Looks like someone has done a non-standard install of some plumbing on your cooling side of the engine. Hate when people do that. They may think they are modifying things so that the diesel will run happier, but that is usually not the case. We just repowered our sailboat with a Beta 60 so I would think that you might want to think of making sure that the install is per the spec of the engine manufacturer instead of what the previous owner wanted to install.

Did some checking with the Dana 24 owners group. It turns out this was standard install from the builder at the time. The surge tank acts as a reservoir but also feeds into the water heater.

keeldragger Intersting. Guess there was a customization that needed to be made for your boat.

@@SailBeforeSunset I suspect the design was to have a reservoir for coolant higher than both the raw water exchanger and water heater. The coolant loop thru the water heater needs to be pressurized so, hence, the pressure cap on the surge tank. ...that's my theory. There little room to squeeze this into such a small boat. BTW, I think I found the issue... loose hose clamp!

    Very educational, my friend!
