    Hello everyone. This is a continuation of our survey and also our experience from our trip to Key West and all the issues we had with deploying the anchor. Our windlass was seized, it was also extremely bent and wobbly. We hope you enjoy the video. Please feel free to ask questions and we will try to answer them when we have an opportunity.

    Great video Franny! Every time I’m putting the load on the bridle and taking the load off of my windlass, I’ll remember all the hard work you had to put into your repair! Thanks!

    The chances of me doing that repair are zero, but it was absolutely fascinating to watch. Franny really knows her stuff. And that bent windlass annoyed me from the first video it was shown, glad it's fixed 😃

    I will repeat myself from before. So much for the boat inspection. Just like with a car pre purchase inspection. The person doing it is crucial. Great job on your sorting the boat out videos. Great learning tool.

      The fellow who did the original marine survey for them did a very poor job. He should have found most, if not all, of the problems they have encountered if he had been any good and knew wha to inspect and look for. The generator problem was inexcusable -- he should have run that generator for at least 1/2 hour to see if it was properly cooling itself. The transmission problem is also an obvious problem he should have noticed.

      No, it's actually kind of a rare boat and the owner had just dropped the price by 100K. However, it was still overpriced.

    Nice repair Franny. I like your circlip pliers! Why did they have the interlock to stop the windlass from being operated without the engine running?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny Před 7 měsíci +2

      Thanks! I think it is just for the current draw. The engine can deliver up to 50A or so while running and that takes the load of the batteries a bit. I think it's a stretch, but I think that's it. I'm the next episode I have a fix for that issue :) Oh, those ring pliers are sweet! They are super beefy. I used them while replacing the rear bearings on my friend's 71 Super Beetle.

    Great video, thank you so much for the education! I hope to buy my first sailboat in 2024 and this info might come in handy!
    Is there a reason that it was set up to work only when the motor is running?
    Thank you

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny Před 7 měsíci +1

      They don't want you to deploy the anchor with batteries only. They would rather you not. Funny thing is that the forward winches are all battery, for sailing. So, it really makes no sense. In fact, they are assuming you will use your engines to anchor. It's possible, but not likely, that you could sail into an anchorage and drop the anchor. However, you really want to test your hold of your anchor once set, and therefore, you would HAVE TO use the engine to test. I hope that makes sense. Congrats on a boat purchase. What kind? Heidi

      I haven't bought the boat yet. I want a small boat like the MacGregor26 M but my girlfriend hopes I will buy a 35 foot Hunter so she can do her "Nesting" thing and have more friends over to visit.
      So...I guess I'll be getting a Hunter. Lol

      No, it's a great question. I don't think that was mentioned in the video, but it is possible to switch and once we were stopped, we did get it to switch. As a default, it was set up, but, of course, the fuse was blown... maintenance was not done on this boat...

  • @jeandunow7794

    I shudder to think what that poor windlass went through to end up looking like that. Am I correct in recalling that your cat was used as a charter before you purchased it? Whether it was a rental, charter, whatever; there's no excuse that could possibly justify this level incompetence by the previous owner. And no, ignorance is not a justification. IMO, if you can't be bothered to learn the correct method of operation, you have no business doing so!!
