BlackBerry Smoke is a great southern rock bluesy group. That was one of their slower songs. If you want one that picks up the pace, I’d recommend “Shake Your Magnolia.” Just a little song about paying a visit to a “dancer of an exotic nature.” Very groovy song. “Let it Burn” is also a good choice for something more upbeat. This is a beautiful and complex song. From the lyrics... not the video, I've always thought it is a man in jail. Each sunrise is another day he wakes up to in that jail.
"There's a man in a cell staring at the walls all around
Swears somebody done put the devil in his head"
Other thoughts:
1) Charlie and Richard (not sure of the other band members) wear Native American jewelry. Respect.
2) Paul Jackson was adopted very young into a family who are members of a Tribe in the Pensacola, Florida area.
(Is that an influence to the video or the lyrics?)
I conclude: Blackberry Smoke has a great empathy, interest, respect and joy in the original inhabitants of what is now the USA.
The woman in the video has no shoes; she's beautiful; young and strong. Was this a love relationship? Did it go bad because a "white guy" was attracted to an "Indian" women or vice versa? Did a fight follow? Did the man get put in jail?
Well, those are my thoughts. If I get to another meet and greet with BBS, I'll try to ask those questions.
In the meantime, just listen to the poetry and watch a live version, too.
