  • 🌳 Pruning during the waning phase of the moon can minimize bleeding and promote better growth.
🌿 Coral bark Japanese maples have the best winter interest when pruned to enhance the color of the bark.
⏰ Timing is crucial for pruning Japanese maples to encourage vigorous growth and prevent excessive bleeding.
✂️ Proper pruning tools, such as hand pruners and pruning saws, are essential for clean and precise cuts.
🌳 Keeping lower branches can deter pets from scratching and provide a natural aesthetic.
🌿 Thinning out smaller branches can redirect energy to promote growth in the canopy and improve overall tree health.
✂️ Removing problem branches, such as crossing or dead branches, is important for the tree’s structure and aesthetics.

Awesome tree! Great instructional video. If anyones afraid of sap bleeding or want to control it throw some cut paste on those large wounds. It has healing properties in the paste or putty form.

The banners are covering a lot of what Elton is trying to demonstrate. I would do it over it would be quite helpful to make the banners transparent and or move them to the upper right as needed. Otherwise super helpful. I'm doing my first pruning on Sango Kaku

Love Bihou, holds that orange color well. A mature sango kaku beside bihou would look like they were on fire beside each other. Love the content Matt, Tim and Brian.
Nice work Elton. Would love to check you out sometime in Charlotte
    Cheers 🍻

I am glad to see this. I have a Wildfire..beautiful bark maple I bought from you guys about 5 years ago and it has whippy branches and I think it could benefit from pruning. I will see to it in the next week.

Thanks for this video. My Bi-hou thinks it is a sunflower, maybe because it is yellow 🤣. It's about 6ft and has 5 main leaders, all turn to South-West (bought like that). After this video I will prune it 👍. Fortunately, it didn't leaf out yet.

What a great tutorial, I learned so much from this video. I have a bihou I got from you guys and 2 of the 3 branches are turning black. Is that normal of this cultivar? I saw on the video the tree has the same black going on the branches.

It’s grey on this one which is typical of older growth
