  • The EDGE in Tech Athena Award for Academic Leadership recognizes senior leaders in academia or national labs (faculty or staff) who have a demonstrated record of technical accomplishments and have encouraged or mentored young scholars or colleagues.
Nominated by Professor Emeritus Sheila Humphreys, the award is being presented to Associate Vice Chancellor Amy Wendt, a beacon of innovation and leadership in the fields of electrical and computer engineering. Professor Wendt has significantly contributed to advancing technology while steadfastly mentoring women and historically marginalized groups in STEM.
Holding MS and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley, and a B.S. in Engineering from Caltech, Professor Wendt's research has profoundly deepened our understanding of plasma behavior, its interaction with materials, and the implications for process and system design. Her expertise, particularly in low-temperature plasmas, has established her as a world leader, pivotal in advancing the technologies essential for producing computers, cell phones, solar panels, and flat panel displays.
Now in its eighth year, the annual EDGE in Tech Symposium highlights the experiences of experts "Advancing Health Tech for All." #HealthTechforAll Panels span telehealth, IoT, medical imaging, sensors, and AI. The symposium was a great introduction to many of the ways technology is changing healthcare and promoting a greater healthspan for all. It also showcased jobs and roles for technologists in health and career paths the speakers took to get there. This event also features the EDGE in Tech Initiative Athena Awards, recognizing those who have championed the advancement of women and people of color in technology.
Thank you to the symposium sponsors and supporters: Siemens, Sandia National Labs, Berkeley Engineering, UC Davis College of Engineering, Baskin School of Engineering at UCSC, Bakar Fellows Program, IoT4Ag at UC Merced, and philanthropist Carla Itzkowich, who made a generous contribution in honor of her father.
