- Just because the Atari Asteroids cabaret that I recently scored for just $100 was fully working when I picked it up, that doesn't mean that it was ready to be added to my home arcade lineup as-is! In this episode, Charlie will knock out a bunch of minor fixes to get this cabinet into "basement-worthy" condition, including complete disassembly & cabinet scrub-down, cleaning the game PCB edge connector, rebuilding the marquee fluorescent light fixture, replacing the 2N3055 power transistor on the AR-I board, reflowing the headers on the AR-I & monitor deflection board, replacing the control panel buttons, fixing the coin door, and lots more!

Cabaret’s are so cool, your tempest is my fav. Another awesome project and find, still watching 😉
Thanks! My Tempest has been acting up lately… (That’s the mantra of EVERY Tempest owner! 😂)
Great vid Charlie. Love to see those old games come to life. You have a gift...you are like the fountain of youth for old video games
Thanks again for watching! It’s a joy to resurrect these old derelicts, and it’s a lot of fun sharing the process with everyone too!
Even through the camera vector graphics look so sweet. Love the crisp glow and those tracers. Beautiful touch-ups.
Can’t get that with an LCD!
Another tip, you can use a big pencil eraser most of the time to clean edge connectors, and also an ink eraser if you need something more abrasive. The residue will clean off with isoropyl or acetone. Usually they are not tinned per se, as lead oxidizes too quickly, but actually tin plated. If they are gold, definitely don't try to re-tin them. It's not good for them in general or the connectors as the lead will gum them up. If there is battery damage you can actually replate them, there's videos on doing that.
Yep, the big soft white pencil erasers come in handy with this sort of thing! But sometimes it’s so bad that you need to repair the contacts with copper tape, which I’ve had to do before too.
I'm absolutely stoked seeing you bringing this back to life. Your attention to detail and dedication to making it "basement worthy" is impressive. Keep those updates coming, and thanks for sharing your expertise with us! 🕹🔧👾 #ArcadeRestorationMastery
Thanks, brother - it really is a lot of fun to restore these derelicts AND to share the process with others who appreciate them!
Great job giving that thing a little bit of TLC. Looking great! Now you need to move another working vector game!
OH NO, you’re right!!
Looks great Charlie, keep up the great work.
Thanks for all the support, Erik!
"HEY GUYS!....WE ARE IN THE BASEM....."oh oh ...(sorry different channel!,.
HEY CHARLIE!,...my asteroids cabaret has vertical collapse,..so my husband and i are going to watch your video and tune up ours!,.
Should I start wearing a bunch of rings and bracelets in my videos? 🤣
Be sure to consult the Black & White Vector FAQ: arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Monitors/FAQ%20Black%20and%20White%20XY%20Version%201.1%20dated%207%20Feb%2002.pdf
For vertical collapse, it recommends checking…
Horizontal line (due to "Y" amplifier defection).
• Bad yoke.
• Bad "Y" amplifier output transistors.
• Blown "Y" amplifier fuse.
• Open fusible resistor in the "Y" amplifier.
• Yoke pins not making good contact (very common).
Nicely done!
Thanks!!
Great video pal!
Thanks for watching, Bruce!!
38:46 I’m sorry you broke the socket. Should use a handheld screwdriver and hand tighten it maybe. 😢
Nonsense! (insert Tim Allen grunting sound)
Cool video Charlie, Asteroids is one of my favorites. Curious to why the start buttons are alternating on free play, both of my Atari games on free play blink simultaneously. Any idea why?
Thanks, Carlos! I didn’t have the game set to free play, but yeah, I thought the out-of-sync blinking was strange when I coined up… I’m not sure what to make if that.
@@overtimearcade Ahh okay. Thanks..
