      You can't keep those types of birds in their cages. It stresses them out and they start going crazy. Not all birds do this mind you, but personally the only ones worth having are the ones that can't stand being in cages. They tend to be much smarter and more fun to interact with. I looked it up and it seems parrots are able to manually control the size of their pupils. It's believed they use it as a form of facial expression/body language, since it's mostly seen during social interactions. I learned something new today.

    • @madeleine61509
      @madeleine61509 Před rokem +4

      @@jesicad.685 I think you might have misunderstood what you read. This is referred to as "pinning their eyes" and is a very common trait of Indian Ringnecks (also called IRNs) as well as a number of other birds.
      Typically, pinning just shows some form of emotion being felt. It is still reflexive (similar to a cat or human's eyes dilating) which is where I think the misunderstanding came into play. I have never seen a single source claiming that birds manually control their pupil size solely for emotion displays. They likely can control pupil size, but it would probably be more for things like spotting threats, etc.
      Because of the wide range of emotions it can signal, it isn't really worth anything when using it to interpret their emotions. It can be happiness, anger, encitement, or mere curiosity. Given the rest of the context (vocalisations, body language, etc.) I would say the emotion the eyes indicate is either excitement or happiness (duh).

      @@igottasitdownforthisone7768 because parrots are incredibly intelligent and highly social. They get bored and lonely very easily, and that directly effects their health. You ever met someone with a Macaw? most the time its by itself, in a 2 or 3 foot sq base tall cage, and has plucked out the feathers on its own chest from stress of being bored/lonely/confined. Sometimes there are owners with parrot having huge enclosures and companions OR have the dedication to give them constant attention... but 'most' people get them without realizing how much attention they crave or how long they live. its just an unfortunate tendency of people not to do enough research before getting a pet... like dog owners who didnt realize/cant afford that breed needing regular grooming so the dog is matted half the time. i work in pet industry...so ive seen it.

      People don't realise that any pet means you gotta give them the best life they can get. "Even" a goldfish (which are also often mistreated :( ). I got a lil bird, a kakariki (similar size to a cockatiel) about a month ago, and while I don't always have time to be with him, I spend the time I have constantly socialising (unless he isn't in the mood to play of course). Whenever I come downstairs and he hears me call out, he immediately flies towards me, which makes me think I'm doing a decent job for now 🥺 still many areas I can improve on, but I'm doing my best.
